I'm from Toronto, Canada and I received a call from 'Chris Brown" of 'Microsoft'. He said my computer was infected with a virus and he was there to give IT support. Yes, Chris brown was calling from India. He uses an English name as his is so long and difficult to pronounce. I agreed with him. Funny, I usually never pick up when I see these 'international' calls displayed on my phone. I let them go to my answering machine. They won't leave a message on your machine as the phone numbers they use are unavailable for callback. And I'm sorry I didn't listen to my gut. Yes, I got scammed, even though I questioned his every move. I also found out that once your Microsoft computer is off warrantee, your on your own, so to speak, if you want to get it to perform better. That's what Best Buy or Future Shop are for. And a lot of independent shops out there waiting for folks like me. Live and learn. I won't get fooled again...

I keep getting called on my business cell phone...I do not answer and if I am lucky and see on the caller id a strange area code, I simply open and close my phone ( I have old flip type). I do not have access to a computer at work, so do not know what they want.

Got a call from India (Indian accent) 128-597-6318, claiming they are from California. I listened to what he was saying (reading from a script) and saying "Ok" at the end of every sentence. I asked how do you know I am using Windows? How do you know my computer is tied to this number you are calling? I could very well be using Linux. How did you get my IP address? Then he hung up! Stupid fools!

They're frauders and doubt that they work for Microsoft at all which is why they call from overseas (so that they can't be pursued).  Check out snopes.com....I don't even talk to them, I just hang up.

Problem- This number does not exist. In North America there is NO area code 128. There are NO area codes from 000 to 199. Area code 200, 600 & 700 are special purpose. 900 is premium and 800 is toll free. The reason scammers like to use these area codes is most phone service providers won't block them. If you have a cell phone, get an app for it. Home phone, look into some blocking equipment. Remember, your phone is a direct link to you. Think of your phone like your car & home. You buy locks for them.

I got 5 phone calls from one guy who said his name was Martin Williams, ID # 11120. Working for Microsoft.

He insisted that he walk me through the errors on my computer.  Cost would be about $200.00.

Even after saying NO,  I got a call again the next day.  Hung up on him.

They are very persistant.

Got a call from them today claiming to be from a company retained by Microsoft to report that my Windows computer was infected by some malware.  He claimed (with a Indian accent) that my computer was one of 11 in my town (he knew the name of my town) that was infected and they needed my help to remove the infection from my computer. He wanted me to get on my computer and he would walk me through the process. I told him that he was out of his mind if he thought I would buy the load of crap he was giving me and I hung up.

Be careful!
Usually my family and I have a system for these guys where whoever answers the phone will keep them on the line for a couple of minutes, then someone else will say (loud enough for them to hear) "Ok Sarge, we got a trace on 'em!) and they instantly hang up.
The last time they called I was home alone so I didn't have any 'back up' but I figured I'd still have a little fun with them and kept the conversation going.
As usual, they claimed to be from Windows and when I asked for a name and employee ID number he had to put me on hold... go figure, he didn't even know his own name.
Anyways, I played along and wrote down everything he asked me to do. Then he read off what was supposed to be my "CLS" (computer license system) ID number. I told him he was off by one number expecting him to ask me to give him the right number (giving him access to my computer. That's when he caught me off guard; HE KNEW MY NAME!! AND MY POSTAL CODE!!! Or at least my last name.
You see, my phone number is listed under my Mother's name and he made the mistake of mentioning her first initial! I like it that way; it makes it easier to weed out the telephone solicitors.
DON'T FALL FOR IT!!! EVEN IF THEY KNOW YOUR NAME!! MICROSOFT WON'T CALL YOU!!
