I had a message left from a mumbling man quoting this phone number. When I rang it it asked for my Abn or tax file number so I hung up. I am glad I googled it to find these posts.

I just got a scam email with this number on it. The number is legit but the email is a scam, as confirmed by the ATO.

Can't be too careful.

It is a legitimate site. We had a call with a message left to ring 1300 661508 on 10Jul13. We have had a problem with an accountant in the last few years who failed to lodge our returns or lodged some of the returns very late for no reason. He was also receiving correspondence from the ATO and not forwarding it on to us as it would have revealed his modus operandi. We paid the accountant invoices for work as we thought all was in-hand. We have since changed accountants as soon as we realised but there is hang-over effect with debt to the ATO. We called the number and it is legitimate. The person on the line identified themselves by first and last name and even told us who called the day earlier. We just gave our name and business name (no TFN) and they had all the details which confirmed it is a legitimate number. They advised us of things only the ATO would know and had contact details for our new accountant which only the ATO would know in relation to this matter. I am very cautious with this type of stuff and don't even use Facebook but this is a legitimate ATO telephone number. Just call them and sort it out otherwise there may be things you need to know to prevent a penalty. I am glad we found out other information we did not know.

These scammers called me on a weekend and claimed to be from the ATO. The ATO will never call you on a weekend. They said it was in relation to a tax return that wasn't lodged on time and asked for my TFN. The return in question is not even due yet, so clearly fake. Do not provide details to anyone that calls you and claims to be from the ATO. Ask them to address whatever questions the claim to have in written correspondence, and if you receive that correspondence, which you likely won't, call the ATO's main number to check whether they have a record of sending that correspondence, and whether they have a record of calling you in the first place. The ATO logs all calls and correspondence sent to taxpayers. Just because they give you a number to call back that is a valid ATO number, doesn't mean that the person/scammer you spoke with is from the ATO.

Debt Collector
After a few hours (mostly on hold)  of conversations with the ATO regarding a call I received stating this number, I have confirmed it is related to the ATO.  The ATO has farmed out their collection to debt collectors and call centres.  They are included in the privacy act / statements as "contractors".  However, it seems that few of their systems communicate with each other, and until I get back to the individual or group that called me, I still do not what it is about. Looking foward(not happily) to a few mopre days of telephone tag before I can actually address whatever their issue is...

These people are try hard scammers. They are even going to the trouble of spreading disinformation on various Internet forums. The ATO is not going to call you and no one from the ATO sits around all day on Internet forums telling us that their phone numbers are legit. If it's important they will send you a letter. I got a call from these numbnuts and they had my details wrong or incomplete and they called from a blocked number. They are identity thieves. Ignore these idiots or at least call the ATO directly if you are concerned.

Had an indian guy leave a voice message asking to call back with my tax file number and/or my ABN. They had my first and last name - but it definitely sounded very  dodgy! These people should be reported!

I got a call from an ATO person today who gave me 1300 661 508 as one possible return call number (with his extension).  I looked up the help number on the Tax Office website, rang them and they were able to confirm outgoing communication in relation to my file. i.e. the call was legitimate.  Furthermore it related to an outstanding matter that the ATO are trying to help resolve.

The number is valid, but some people from "ATO" called my wife and asked for details, and she refused. She instead asked for their contact details and they gave this 1300 number. She called ATO switchboard and confirmed that this 1300 number is legit and they transferred her to the right department. The genuine ATO officer in the right department confirmed that the number is correct but they have no issue to contact her.

I just want to highlight that some scrammers are calling random people to obtain their personal information. Once they are refused and asked for contact details, they then give you the geniune ATO contact details to cover themselves.

The lesson I learn is that: NEVER give away personal information to random caller, but instead using the official contact numbers to verify the issues.

This morning 8:30am, I received a phone call to my mobile with blocked number claimed that he is Raj from ATO with a urgent matter, he asked for my DOB to verify my identity. I hesitated to give it away, so he ask me to call back 1300661508 within two working days during business hours, and stated again it was urgent, there might be his colleague discussing the issue with me.
I searched ATO website, and called 132869 switch board, asked the lady to transfer to line 1300661508, it was genuine number for ATO because I was in the quene for 10minutes!
A gentleman serviced me, when I quoted my tax file number, he searched data base and said my tax status is fine, did not undersatnd why I was contacted and apologized for the inconvenience.
So I conclude that the so called Raj is a scammer, when he was declined, he gave a genuine ATO number.
So, please, whoever recieves a call asking for your identity, don't give it away, check the website, get the official number, then call back.

Recieved the call the other day.
Te really strange thing about it was they were looking for the person who owned my phone number before I took it it over.
When I first got my ph number, when I moved to the town I am living in, I recieved lots of calls looking for the previous owner.  Tis funny how the ATO doesn't have the new number for him.
Last year there was an error in my tax history and well they WROTE to me telling me the problem.  Government departments love a paper trail.

BTW did I mention that I have had my phone number now for 9 years.
To me it seems like some scaming person has gotton hold of old name and number details and rying to get rich quick.  I have seen how easy it is for tax scams to be done.
Dont be caught out, ring the ATO directly if you think you have a problem.

Hi All,

Had this phone number call me,  was a bit suspicious so I called the tax dept.  Its legit,  the guys from the tax dept who are commenting here are telling the truth.  Though a couple of them are clearly frustrated
with the level of paranoia in the world.  if you are still not sure call the tax dept yourself but don't leave it.  the last thing you need in your life is an angry ATO.  lucky for me I did call them and got my stuff sorted.

The number's legit. People need to get over their racist attitude to callers with accents. We're a multicultural country, why should a government department be any different?

And if in doubt, call the ATO switchboard. the number's in the white pages and on the internet. They'll confirm it's legit.

I'd like to know who these posters called who say the ATO confirmed it was a scam number.

Oh, and they're calling you because your BAS is late. You might want to get onto that.

Alfonso, guess the jokes on you considering it is the ATO! And yes, we do send written correspondence to clients...however we also call clients if we don't have a response to that correspondence. Further to that, trust me, I laugh reading your comments as you are very ill informed stating that it is dodgy when I get up every morning to make calls & receive calls for this very number!!!! We are an equal opportunity organisation & we have ppl of all nationalities working here so you may receive a call from someone who has an kind of an accent. People are allowed to be cautious, but by you making stupid statements like this you may prevent ppl from speaking with us & therefore penalised fro not addressing the issue.

I also had a message on my machine today 31/3/11.  After finding this site, and seeing some peoples answers, I checked our business account through the business portal, and there was an overdue BAS statement.  I haven't rang back yet but assuming it must of been legit.
