Indian voice starts some kind of sales pitch .... tell him or her not interested take me off the calling list or filing a complaint . Something needs to be done about this as they tried calling back like 5 more times till I told them a police complaint was being filed . CRTC and or the autorities need to get this crud under wraps .
I listed this as a prank call as I don care what it was once I stated not interested .

Similar experience. I don't get it, why call, then shout good bye?

Anyone who believes that Microsoft would call them to check on a computer, is silly at best and a fool soon parted from their money. Microsoft does not care sh*t about you, your computer or anything. Once they have your money for installed software, they kiss you goodbye until you call them and use your credit card to pay for their help services.
The only people calling you are scammers, total frauds. Serious computer tech organizations are way too busy to do outcalls to solicit business.

Got a crank call from ''microsoft''?!? Telling me my computer was being hacked by virus'. Wanting to access my computer.

Call from that number appeared on my phone June 4, 2012, when answered there was about a 15 second pause and then a kind of gruff mechanical sounding good-bye.

nobody spoke...I hung up... f**k off scammers I am poor enough already without you making it even worse.

Recv'd a mid afternoon call from 161-256-2589. No response when I picked up the receiver, then after about 10 sec. a recorded voice says "good-bye" and the line disconnects.
Obviously, this is robo dialed call to see if there is pick up at the other end. I expect to be receiving more calls from "telemarketers" or other shady types.
One trick that has worked well for me in the past is having a wilderness/survival whistle handy and blowing 1 loud, sharp blast into the receiver. They do not call back.

Asian caller from # 161-256-2589 with distinct accent, 100% not to be trusted...
| sam27 2012-05-09 00:56:05 Unknown |
Your idea sounds good, i got this call and the boy's accent was Asian, he got pissed off when I said I don't trust you, you could be some kind of a person who wants either to have access to my PC, or send viruses, then he said "i can damage your computer and lock it'.
Today the 8/May/2012 i got the same call from 161-256-2589, with the same voice and tone..

What I have done in the past to stop these annoying calls is when I answer, and they start with the sales pitch, I break in and say " I will be recording this call for security purposes, I hope you don't mind" they hang up immediately

This number seems to be connected to other scam number... 1- 510-943-3040...today I got call from the 510 number first saying they were a microsoft tech calling to help me fix a microsoft problem..when I told them I wanted to speak to someone in Canada..not usa...they had excuses..knew from start it was a scam but was curious..told them the call was bull$%^# and hung up. Few seconds later I got call from this 161 number saying they would transfer me to a Canadian to speak to..told them to not call me again..not interested then contacted microsoft..was told by rep at company that it is a scam..[probably to try to get consumer to purchase something expensive and unnecessary...

Don't pick up unknown numbers. Feb 9/12 phone rang about 6 times and went in to my VM,no message left. Number was 161-256-2589. Bell Canada will not accept this number when you use there call blocking service.
| Mary 2012-01-04 00:30:35 Unknown |
At the beginning is silence, then, a creepy female voice yells, 'GOOD-BYE" with such a finality, that I am shaken for a few seconds. I will never answer a number I do not recognize ever again.

1st it was 613-230-2890 at 6:09PM (OTTAWA TIME) and some mixed up girl doing a survey called, then
2nd it was 161-256-2589 at 6:38PM (OTTAWA TIME) which only rang 3-4 times, THEN STOPPED?
Web hoster & domain name reseller nelson cashen and his wife diane, who we call Mother hubbart, and their sick (self proclaimed) daughter mzz harnish get Thrills out of harassing many of their former residents in this way! They can arrange this, EASY, along with SPAM & SCAMS Gallor, using proxy servers and even getting into our PBX or phone system. Ever heard of them?
FOR US - IT'S BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS!!!

This is from a compay call centre. The sales rep claims to be from "Windows technical support". They try to get the homeowner to check for disc errors or memory failures, something every computer seems to have no matter how safe its virus and computer cleanup programs. Once the homeowner runs some sort of disc check program from the home computer (safe, as sales rep doesn't have access to the computer) and finds errors, the sales pitch starts. If the homeowner is worried by the normal errors shown, I can only assume that what the sales rep is doing is selling generally unnecessary virus etc. software rather than installing malware. I haven't been so dumb as to get to that stage.
Despite what this current site says, 161 is a valid area code. It is for Manchester England. That is a city largely populated by south Asians. Or it could be a switching number that forwards calls to India. Who can tell? U.K. warnings identify the source city as Calcutta. The people who have called me maybe 10 times in the past year with the same pitch have all had thick Indian accents. There are lots of U.K. warnings about this - google India + scam + virus + phone - e.g. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/18/phone-scam-india-call-centres
