Telephone scam re: anti-virus software trying to weasel something out of my mother. I assume they wanted her to buy something, but one way or another, it's irritating. Found this as a rough example of the scam:
SCAMwatch has heard several variations of this scam, but generally the caller will claim they suspect your computer is infected and that they need remote access to check. If you allow them access, they will then pretend to run a scan and report that your computer is infected. The caller will then try to convince you to purchase anti-virus software straight away to remove the infection. The fee may be a one-off payment or an ongoing subscription.

Someone with a thick accent called and asked for me, but thought my last name was my first name (someone else answered the phone here when this individual called).
Thanks to Ooma, they're now blacklisted and will be shown immediately to voicemail without ringing the phone from now on.

This number has called my work phone 3 days in a row. Since it is not a known number, I opted to not answer it. If anyone know about this phone, please post it.

Probably a Magic Jack phone or another service set up in the US but shipped the device oversees. So calls look like they are orginating from the US.

Received this call at work...have answered in the past but they always hung up. This time a female with a heavy Indian accent asked for me by ~almost my name then followed with "As an IT professional you're entitled to xxxxx free xxxx seminars xxxxxx the next is at xxxxx and lasts 16 minutes xxxxxx"
The xxxxx approximates words I couldn't understand. I told her I wasn't interested and she thanked me and hung up.

Bastards called me 9 times today, eventhough i am on the DO NOT CALL registry. Strong INDIAN accent. I asked him to stop calling, and he ignored me and kept going on about some magazine subscription. I told him that the MF took my job since we outsourced our future to the CHINESE and INDIANS, he laughed and kept going with his sales pitch.
BUY AMERICAN, HIRE AMERICAN...............

Have gotten (201) 338-6189 calls for several days now, ID says "Unknown". I'm an engineer and get LOTS of calls trying to get me to subscribe to trade journals. They won't take no for an answer. This must be one of them. I won't answer. If I do and decline, they send me the magazine anyway.
DO NOT CALL should apply to businesses as well as private residences.

Called wanting the owner, I said he is not in the office and the only way he could speak with the owner was to leave a message for a call back. He said he was calling about a website and hung up.

Received a call from this number today on my cell phone with no message. I believe I have received calls from this number before though this was the first time I looked more into the number and who is calling me.
I am from Canada and not sure how many other Canadians have received a call from the same number?
| ed 2011-06-06 20:41:15 Unknown |
I also received many calls from them and did the mistake to respond this morning. I am from Canada and now I am scare they will spread my number around. Again, related to subscription to a magazine.

They've been calling me EVERY day for the past 2 weeks. I finally answered today and he asked for me by name. Except, he couldn't pronounce it. I told him "Look, you guys call me EVERY DAY. I don't know who you are OR why you're calling, but you need to take me off your list IMMEDIATELY." He was very rude and offended, but told me they would remove me. We'll see!

Indian telecentre hawking various IT products. Called me trying to sell Baseline magazine. Told him to please stop calling this number. I don't hold much hope of stopping it though...

I have been getting these calls for three years now. I usually say I am not the person they are looking for, but ask them to hold while I go get him (me) They usually hold for a few mins. and hang up. But I still get the calls.
I have responded witht he following:
1. His cow died ( for the Hindus). When they ask for someone else i say they are all helping him bury his cow.
2. His dog died. See above.
3. He died, all the other engineers are at his funeral.
4. The company is out of businees, we are service liquidating the assets.
AND I STILL GET THE CALLS.

TELL THEM THEY ARE UNDER SCRUTINY FOR CALLING COMPANIES AND HANGING UP.
APPARENTLY THEY THINK THEIR JOB CONSISTS OF HANGING UP ON COMPANIES.
AFTER CALLING THAT NUMBER, THE TELEMARKETER TOLD ME SHE IS SIMPLY HANGING UP AND THEN TELLING PEOPLE THERE IS NO INFORMATION TO GIVE TO ANYONE IF THEY CALL.
SHE IS BEING INSTRUCTED BY HER MANAGEMENT.

"DO NOT CALL" Registry does NOT apply to businesses which is why they are calling.
Also: By calling from a foreign country they are not bound by the same laws as in USA.
Therefore, we are to ignore, hang up and do not curse nor conversate. Apparently they like hearing us.
So far, they are calling and hanging up on us. This is a good thing. They could be calling at night.
In a foreign country they can call us during the night.
NEWS FLASH!!! They are calling from New Jersey.
People in New Jersey are NOT required to finish high school.
MOST are not educated past the 9th grade. Be wary of them.
They do not understand english because they cannot read either.
Think:
Someone had to take the time to help them memorize their sales pitch (if any)
They are hanging up because they cannot read the sales pitch on their screen.
ALSO: They do not know how to type on their computer.
Throw them peanuts and make them do tricks. They are nothing else but circus bears.
Those idiots will do anything as long as somebody tells them what to do. It's their management in New Jersey - They pronounce it "NUUUU Jersaaaa" Beware of their heavy (Indian) accent. They pretend.
They want to pretend to live in Arizona with the rest of their retired idiots. Be careful of where you are.
As for me - I am a comedy act in a city near you.
YES this is a real problem telemarketer - they apparently do not get the point of calling people.
They would rather be stupid and sell the Nigeria myth than work a real job. Pity them...
Monte.

Have had calls from this number every day for over a week now. There is never any one there when I answer.
| Denman 2011-06-06 20:41:15 Unknown |
Yeah, I got that call from (201) 338-6189, but missed it. It sounds like from the other posts that it is likely from a contractor working with ZiffDavis publishers where they try to get people to sign on to free IT webinars based on the EWeek publication. Just a waste of time. Also very heavy on the Indian accent hence I believe that the call centre is in India but with a local transmitter for all of North America based out of New Jersey - I'm in Toronto, Ontario. Just a joke aside "I don't like to be talked to by someone with curry on their breath!"

I am from Canada and got this number at work this afternoon and I did not answer since this is a number I don't know.

The lady with thick accent asked if I had ever been a Dish Network customer and how many TVs I had. I told her I was at work and couldn't talk. She said she would call back.
