I got this call today, but when I told her, this is not a business, she said thank you for your time and sorry for the inconvenience. When I tried to re-dial the number, it was listed as "not a working number" and to check the number and try again.  hmmmmm, fishy.

guy called saying he was updating American Express information, and then asked the name of the company he called. I said 'Blow It Out Your A--" He stumbled and then asked me to repeat it. I said Blow It Out Your A--. He wasn't sure what to say so I told him we make Whopee cushions. He hung up.

Caller id said "americanexpress". Call stated with a "this call is recorded for quality control purposes", and has a loud beep tone every fifteen seconds. Young lady wanted the name of my business. When I told her that she already should have that, she repeated her request for the name of the business and stated that this was for a "credit update." I then asked for a supervisor, told me "a supervisor is not available." I repeated my request for a supervisor and she responded with "a supervisor is not available. I do not have a supervisor." I repeated my request for a supervisor until she hung up.

Received an email from my admin who took this call in the am. Call came through to our main office line; however, all the contact information AMEX has on file would direct them my personal line and email. I don't want to sound cheap, but leaving a message for me to call back at a non-800 number seemed slightly strange given that their annual fee per card is $400. Called and confirmed with agent through their 800 number that everything with the account is current and that there are no "notations" on file for any type of courtesy call. BEWARE. Do not call back on your personal cell or give out anything that might provide the opportunity for these crooks to pull additional data that they may eventually use.

I just received a call from this number. Some lady from "American Express Open" asking for information. I told her I'm not authorized to give out information over the phone. Had to tell her twice before she hung up. There was a continual beep on the line, like it was being recorded.

I just received a call from this number and I am neither a business nor have an Amex card.  Probably collectors or a company that gathers information for collectors. I am in bad financial shape and have active collections, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

Just got a call from 201-373-8406.  A foreign sounding lady (and a bad line as well).. background beeps could be heard but there was no "this call may be monitored".  She mumbled something about being from American Express Open and wanting to verify my business information.  She asked the name of my business and I gave it.  Then she asked if I was the person who made decisions about expenses for the businesses and I answered "you have the right person" (I always try to avoid saying "yes" or "I am" or other wording that when recorded could be altered in a sentence).  By this point, I felt suspicious since the call quality didn't seem AMEX worthy, the caller ID wasn't AMEX etc..  she asked for my name and I asked her what was the nature of the call.  She mumbled something about updating their database and could she have my name.  I said I still don't understand why AMEX would call for such information.  I told her I was busy and would call American Express back directly.  She said "here's my number" - also suspicious since it wasn't "here's THE number"...  as I tried to hang up, she asked again for my name.  I just hung up and started googling.

Dunno what they ultimately want with the information, but I've a feeling it's not good.

I have been continually receiving calls from 201-373-8406 for about a month now.  Usually it is between 8am and 10am.  Although caller ID says "AMERICANEX," I have only received valid calls from American Express from their Ft Lauderdale area code not a 201 area code.  This caller never leaves a message.  Today I called back and heard a beeping sound before a person answered.  I was told that it was American Express Verification (or Validation?- Now I've forgotten).  I said I had the wrong number.  Based on previous posts, I believe this is a combination of data mining and sales call center.  I will now block the number.

I received a call from this number and the lady (Indian accent) said she was from American Express Open, and that she was calling to verify/update our business listing information.  She read off the name of the wrong company and asked me to verify it, which I did.  She then asked for the name of the person who makes financial decisions and I replied that he was not available.  She then asked for his name and I declined to provide it.  I asked for her number so as to return the call and I was given the above number (201-373-8406.)

American Express would never do business in this fashion; do not give out any factual information if you should receive such a call.  It is best to not give out any at all.

I got a call from this number today.  I said I wasn't comfortable giving this information to them and to please contact my American Express account manager since I do have a merchant account with AmEx.  After telling her this a second time, she hung up.  I then sent an e-mail to my AmEx account manager.

I just got this call and the guy kept saying the same thing, that he's with AMEX and that he wanted to verify the company's info.  I used to be in sales and when the person on the other line asks you a question that does not follow the script it's obvious there is a script when they just repeat their question.  A company like AMEX would have a much better script than just "I'm calling to verify the company's information".  I'm labeling it as a scam because my gut tells me so.

3 tells are
1. Vague intro and request
2. Using a 201 area code that I could call back.  (usually it's a menu based 1800 number that they call from)
3. He didn't give his name and answered as soon as I called the number back.

AMEX is too big for all of these little mistakes.  This is someone who is getting paid to get info from new businesses for a database or scam.  Don't be too gullable and give out info.

I would like to explain about the seriousness of this topic..First of all YOU guys from America should KNOW what is a SCAM or a Real call who is just verifying on behalf of the AMEX..because you guys always exaggerate things..before  OVER REACTING, listen to the caller...If he or she asks you only the business name and contact person it means AMEX wants to verify the information that they already have on file..THEY WILL NEVER ASK FOR YOU CARD NUMBER,BIRTHDAY,SSS,MOTHER'S MIDDLE NAME ETC OR ANY PERSONAL INFO ABOUT YOUR CARD...why they ask for the type of card because they are making sure that what they we're calling are those with small business or with consumer card because probably they're gonna send you mails.(because american express open is for small business).or what you call junk mails..why is it that it "on behalf" because they only help AMEX TO VERIFY AND NOT TO SELL.they have totally different database from amex..amex just provides them the MAILING DETAILS(that's why they don't know if you're a card member or not) and they do  the verification.as simple as that.DON'T OVER REACT..YOU CAN ASK THE CALLER THE QUESTIONS IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THEY'LL EXPLAIN IT TO YOU.but if she's asking more that what i have stated above, well, it's a SCAM then you should be careful of the info that you will give...or you can visit this...www.open.com/verify access code 0620 they are the guys who help amex verify....see for yourself...

I received calls from this number twice yesterday but caller did not leave a message. Since I used to work for a division of AMEX, I have a feel for the way they conduct busienss and this seemed a little off.  WARNING:  the person who answers identifies himself as a representative of American Express OPEN and there are beeps in the background as if the call is being recorded.

The best was to deal with these scumbags is to play along and give false information and have some fun.   Or, answer questions with questions until they give up.    Ask How, When, Where, and Why?

Could last for 20 minutes of pure fun.
