Depends on the state. Know your state laws. If in the state of FL, only the institution that owns your debt can sue. Collectors cannot sue.

Debt Collector
I just received a call from 202-204-2488 and it was a debt collector and was working an account for Conn's of which I have defaulted on.  He said that his delivery driver was trying to get me to answer the door so they could pick up the items of which I defaulted on.  Of course the driver was not really at my door!!!  Ask me if I wanted to settle the account and he would call the driver to come back to the office instead.  I SAID NO and I'm waiting outside for him....he never showed....go figure!

I was called 2/12/14 by what sounds to be a recording. Some thing about resolution and if I want to make a statement for the record. My statement is go to HELL. they want me to call 202 204 2488. No way no how. Their is a scam running now that was brought to my attention. Not sure if this is it or not. When you call the number back it is a sex line and they charge you $20.00 a min till you hang up. A charges will stick and can not be declined. That is some super BS right there. Good luck

Debt Collector
I have received several calls from this number. They will not identify themselves to me. The first call they left a message saying there was a report of identity theft on my SS#.  Then they called demanding money expecting me to pay at that time but would give me no information about  the debt, or their client they were collecting for. The phone call was disconnected after the caller put me on hold to talk to his supervisor. Then I got a call saying that they were a courier and were serving papers to me at my place of employment. When I asked if I could have them served to a different location they gave me a # to call and hung up. I didn't call the # and no papers were served.  Now they are calling my employer. These are pretty scary calls!! They are extremely aggressive.  I understand that people need to pay what they owe but, this is definitely a scare tactic by a fraudulent company!!

I agree with you. I think companies go way to far but i also know that people will find any excuses not to pay. When a collector calls i know if i owe the money they claim or not. People will do anything to get out of paying what they owe and will use any excuse not to pay. If a collection agency called me about a debt i dont know about of course i would never pay. If i do owe it i would pay. Thats all im saying.

>>>>If you owe you should pay. Its that simple
Slight correction, if you owe and the debt has been validated as per the FDCPA, then one should pay.

Unfortunately, someone may owe a debt and pay an unscrupulous "collector" who does not owe the debt.  Then they are out the money and still legally owe that debt to the company that owns it.

A few more important points:
1.  Collectors don't issue or "serve" papers, the courts do
2.  No legitimate party would ever call to warn you that you are being served (e.g., target may avoid me or plan to do harm to me if they knew I was coming)
3.  The BS line used by fake process servers that they will serve you at work and wish to save you the embarrassment (Seriously, I would just walk up to you in the parking lot and serve you.  Take me 2 minutes and no red tape BS of going into a workplace)
4.  Fraud is a criminal matter, debt a civil matter.  Collectors don't charge people with criminal offenses

Sounds like typical overseas scammer BS.  They have "federal documents"?  What the heck does that mean?   No one gives you a heads up that you'll be served - the process server just shows up.  Never pay any caller who refuses to MAIL a debt validation letter - it is a violation of the FDCPA to refuse to mail proof of debt.

Please do report your callers to the FTC, FCC, FBI and your state's Attorney General.

I got this call today 11-14-2013 From a Director Carol Robins. She stated that some fraud had been committed involving my name, SS and a mutual client. I highly doubt this is true since I have Lifelock and other security features on my personal info and have not been notified by any of them. Beware of scams

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
