This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

Debt Collector
Caller said he was officer David Cooper (strange since he had a middle eastern / Indian accent). The company he spoke of was very slurred, thus hard to understand. They were trying to collect some unpaid legal fees. You could hear background callers doing the same scam. They forgot the #1 rule of scamming: "don't say you are David Cooper with a foreign accent." They called twice within 2 hours with the same voice and the same rehearsed read message.

Got a call from this number stating they are the IRS and a claim has been filled against me.  I played along knowing they are fake the IRS does not call people they send official letters.  I tried to know who they are but he beat around giving me fake numbers and IDs.

He said they will call the local police. Yeah right... I told him go ahead I have no problems with the IRS and I pay my taxes regularly and their are no errors in my file because I use a good CPA.

Don't fall in to that scam

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Got the same, barely understandable, message from "David Cooper".  Yeah...I'm sure that's his real name. Apparently, if I don't call him back, they will show up at my door with a subpoena!!!  Oh nooooooo! Seriously, I hope no one is actually afraid of this person...

DO NOT BE MISLEAD OR BAMBOOZLED BY THESE BOZOS! DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION BECAUSE THEY WILL SEIZE UPON IT TO DO AN INTERNET CHECK ON YOU.  THE MORE INFO THEY GET, THE MORE IT LENDS CREDIBILITY TO WHY THEY ARE CALLING/WHAT INFORMATION THEY ARE TRYING TO GET FROM YOU!

They are an unprofessional gang of thugs working from a large volume call center (you can hear their cohorts in the background) running a very complex and widespread scam--as you can see from the posts before mine! These people have very heavy foreign accents (Arabic/Indian?), do not use proper grammar, will not put an English speaking supervisor on the phone--and if you ask to speak to one, they hang up on you!

The initial message stated:  "This is Alex Rogers calling from "The State Investigation Dept" because someone has lodged a complaint against your name and your identity. I want you to give me a call back and ask for the Investigation Officer at number 202-239-6612. If you do not call me back, we will have to download your case to the courts and subpeona you."

When you call back, and press them to provide valid credentials by asking "Which branch of the government do you report to?"  or "Which department in the IRS are you working in?", they say "The State".  When asked "Which state?" they repeatedly replied "The State" , "The United States" or "Washington, DC State".

I told them there is no way they could possibly be connected to any government office, agency or bureau and not to call me back...and they started calling me back every three minutes changing their names from Alex Rogers, to Alex Cooper, to Jeff Barker saying, "Hey, I want to talk to you. You think this is a scam, huh? I will tell you this. ma'am; this is not a scam. You are really in trouble."

Folks:  No official representative of the United States Government is going to contact you in this manner, and certainly not without legitimate credentials that can be verified. They know nothing about our country, our government or our judicial system. SO BE VERY CAREFUL!  It is bad enough these idiots have our phone numbers; if our identities have been stolen, it is undoubtedly THEM.

I just got a voice mail from number 202-622-5000
an Indian accent with the name David Cooper calling from state investigation department that there is a legal investigation filed against me and unless I call there will police or what ever this idiot was talking about at my door .

most of his message is not understandable with the indian accent.
he is asking me to call 202-2306612 and this number is not a working number when I call
but the number they called from 202-622-5000 is the Internal revenue number and that is why it scared me.

They called me and told me that i owe money to IRS  and if do not pay they will take my house, cars, bank account and they gave me a warrant number.  They asked me if I like to settle the amount out of court and then they connected me with their supervisor, he told me I should pay 1292 dollars to IRS and go wire the money from a CVS to IRS restitution department right away; and if  i do not pay there will be a police office arresting me. When I asked for an address to send the money they were not able to provide me with the address, and I knew it was hoax. We called the Federal Trade commission and let them know that this was going on.  These individuals have an Asian Indian accent and one introduced himself  as Mr.Cooper  and then his supervisor, Jack Rodgers
