Good for you.  Just got the same call from 1-202-506-8501 and I was accused for Tax Fraud and owe them $6,248.  Did scare me at first but then realized from my internet friends that this is fake.  I called back several times and would not answer.  Time for a drink to calm down after all this craziness.

I too just got the phone call on my home voice mail twice from 1-202-506-8601 accusing me of tax fraud and pay $6,248 or go to jail for five years.  It did scare the hell out of me until I found out it is a scam.  Send them nothing and let them know you contacted the FBI.

No it isn't.  It is a scam.  Read the previous posts.  Common Indian based scam.  Don't give them any money.  Period.

Targeted our CFO at work. Heavly accented person claiming to be John Wilson with the IRS calling to talk to our CFO because she had issues with her 2013 tax return.Threatened to take legal action against her if she didnt comply.  When I researched this number and found out it was a scam, I called them back and told them to take us off their calling this because I knew it was a scam. They cussed me out. It was pretty awful. The funny part is, the guy had to remember what his name was when I asked him to repeat it. If that doesn't put up a red flag...what does!!?

Just received a call from "Jason Stewart" from 202-241-0617.  He claimed to be from the IRS, gave me my own name and asked if that was me.  He had a barely understandable Middle Eastern accent.  I refused to confirm my name and asked what business did he have with the person he was asking about.  He said he wanted to confirm my name b/c the person he was looking for had some "problems with a recent IRS year."  If I were that person I would have to call his supervisor "Damon Marshall" to resolve the problem.

His incredibly thick accent, the unsolicited call, and the strange request I call them back to resolve a tax problem certainly set off red flags.  He insisted his supervisor was waiting for my call.  A government employee waiting for me to call him at 6pm?  Clearly a scam now!  (I'm a govt employee so I can mock govt employees)

After getting off the phone I googled the number and the IRS fraud resources online.  The IRS phone tree led me to a "leave a message at the tone" answering machine.  The google result landed me here which was much more informative.  I think I will try the links above to complain to YMAX corp also.

Whew, I'm so glad I Googled that number.  A lady's computer voice called me and left a message saying this is the IRS and not to dismiss this call or else there may be some legal action.  The phone number was from 1-202-241-0617.  I called back only to get a busy signal.

MAGICJACK !!!

This is a scammer using an untraceable magicJack device, probably from overseas.  See:  http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-347-832-4519/2#p710251082229542377
for what this means and what you can do about it.

In particular:
In addition to the regular reporting channels, e.g., the Department of the Treasury, the FTC, and your local state attorney general's office, you might also report the abuse to YMAX Corp.  I have seen reports that they are pretty good at responding to complaints and may be able to permanently shut off a magicJack device, if necessary, so that it can never be used again.

The YMAX Corp. main web page is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com
and their site giving information on how to lodge a complaint is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com/contact.html

Note that the "contact" website gives a clickable link to a "live chat" where you can make your complaint.

In the meantime, tell your caller to shove his magicJack into his sphincter ani externus.

I received a call yesterday from this number, left message on my answering machine saying it was the IRS. I called back today and never talked to anyone, but I heard them in the background trying to get people's bank and credit card information. They sounded liked they were from India.

These IRS impersonators called me back.  Told them you were fraud. They said they were not but I hung up.  After that, I called Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration that is IRS's web page to report scam/fraud.  They said this number (202-241-0617) was a scam.

I am so glad I learned that if I googled the number, this site shows up. I received the call on 5/1, some voice mesage to say there would be a grave consequence if I don't call back. Then on 5/3, the guy with an accent left me a message again, this time he knows my name. We'll see he will call back again today.

I did the same thing with some scammers several years ago.  I played along with them until we got to the part where they sent me a credit card number.  Told me to charge $10,000 to it, send them $5000 and I could keep the rest for my time.  I then figured out by the first four digits that it was Mastercard.  I called them and reported the card stolen.  I then told the scammers that their luck had run out and to go screw themselves.  They then proceeded to threaten me with death.  My husband was very upset with me.....  I just laughed.  I told my husband that this was most likely some idiot sitting in an Internet Cafe in Nigeria with 1000 other scammers.  Needless to say, the fact that I am alive to type this means they did not kill me.
