Prank Call
Got a call form the "IRS" investigator Don Smith (who sounded like he was from India) and said unless i send him $3,000.00 in back taxes he would have me arrested. he gave me his badge number and wanted to talk to my lawyer. This went on for about  two weeks. I contacted the local police and they said it was a scam. DO NOT FALL FOR IT OR GIVE ANY INFORMATION.

A guy named "Marcus King" with a slight accent left a voicemail saying there is a warrant out for my arrest and that I need to call back, 202 241-2103. He said he was with the "Crime Investigations Division" and left his bagde # 72853. They did this about a month ago to my wife and after talking with the guy asking him questions and leading him on, I finally said "would your mother be proud of what you are doing....cheating honest people out of their money....", "is this how she raised you"? He suddenly got very ticked off and said some threatening comment I could not understand and hung up on me.  The scary thing is that the number they provide is a valid IRS/ Federal Investigations tel#! It shows on the caller ID and I am sure scares people into thinking the call is legitimate. I called and spoke to a federal employee about this and they confirmed it is a scam, and that the perpetrators somehow are able to use the US govm't Crime Division tel# on their ID when calling(!).

Idiot with a heavy middle eastern address claimed to work for the IRS. He said his name was Jack William and that I owed the IRS money, then proceeded to threaten to arrest me.

Scam, a bad one at that.

James Jones left a message.  Said he called on behalf of the IRS.  Spoke with a heavy Indonesian of Filipino accent. Lots of background noise.  Said that there was a warrant out for my arrest for tax fraud, and provided a warrant number.  Asked me to call him back at 202-241-2083.

I encourage everyone who gets called from these jerks to call them back CONTINUOUSLY (every 30 sec). Apparently, they are stupid enough to use a phone line for their restaurant business (There is an Egyptian restaurant in EGYPT that has this telephone number listed on their Facebook!) to make this call. The continuous phone calls apparently clogged their line up and THEY DON'T LIKE IT!
I got a call this AM from these jerks at number 202-241-2126. I really got pissed off and called them back every 30 sec. Initially, there is just a message stating that "this mailbox does not accept messages." Eventually, the phone line opened up. It took about 40+ calls until these jerks were so bothered that they finally picked up, and even called me back on my cell phone. At first, these jerks got into cussing and threatening match with me (at least, I think that was what it was since I really could not understand them very well). Eventually, after another 40+ calls from me leaving 40+ message "whoever the a-hole who called me today and pretended to be CIA agents, pick up or I will keep calling all f...... day," some other jerk finally picked up and POLITELY begged me not to call because it disrupted his "restaurant business." He pretended to not know who called me but said he will find out and will tell him not to call me again, POLITELY.
The most important thing I got from this is that the barrage of continuous calls DOES disrupt whatever "business" these jerks are doing! It probably prevents them from using the line to con other people!
Once again, I do encourage that anyone who receives calls from these lowlife jerks at 202-241-**** to "return the favor" and barrage these as**oles relentlessly to interfere with their "business." Hopefully, these little actions will tie them up and take their time away from conning others.

Hello,  I just received a call from 202-241-2083, he had a very heavy accent, maybe Indian or arabic, called himself victor, and claimed my wife owed the IRS money and is under a criminal investigation.  Go to this web site, http://phonehelp.comuv.com/facts.html  and they will show you where to go and what to do to report them.  This is a scam so don't think that you are in any trouble.  Joe

Caller left msg saying he was with the criminal investigation and would be arresting my son within 72 hrs if he didn't respond to call. He spoke horrible English and you could hear multiple people talking in the background, like telephone solicitors.    Stated the local police dept would be making the arrest. I had to repeat msg 4 times to understand what he was saying.  Very thick accent, either Asian or Indian.

same thing happened to me.  guy call with what sounded like an asian accent, stated the IRS forwarded my file to them and he was call from the CIA.  Then he said it was the "CID: Crime Investigation Department".  He said police were on their way and would be at my door within 1 hour and could detain me for up to 72 hours.  I said I would wait at the door, and he said "Do you think you're smarter than a government official?"  Quite funny.  He also stated that the phone call was a recorded 3-way call with the Department of Homeland Security and required that I answer some questions truthfully because they could be used against me.  So many goverment agencies!  For what?  Still not sure...

Prank Call
An asian indian accent man left a message on my phone accusing me of 3 crimes related to IRS, home land security about sending money to foreign counties. He identifies himself as an IRS investigator. My case was a serious crime. He talks about DSS, NOA, Case number which I did not get. He left the message on my home phone. He offers two solutions either pays through CVS pharmacy voucher $913 or he will call a local police to arrest me. The other option is he is sending a local homeland security officer to get cash in front of my house.

I did not understand his strong accent, just gathered that I would have been arrested if I don't go to the closest 7-11 or CVS to pick up something and reload money of $913 to something. So I asked for his name and where he was calling from, and still tried to figure out what I missed about this. Then he got mad and said they would not accept the confession letter now and I would be arrested.
What if the person who got the call had a heart attack??? Who is responsible for it?

>>> "YMAX COMMUNCATIONS CORP" which is based in Florida <<<

... is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company that sells magicJacks and provides all the magicJack phone numbers. of which this is one.  MagicJacks can be plugged in anywhere in the world there is Internet service and call into the US showing the assigned number for their device.

Scammers can get YMAX numbers in many area codes, but 202 seems to be popular because it looks like they are calling from Washington, DC.  Most people seem to associate such calls with the federal government even though a large number of private citizens live within the city limits.

MagicJacks work well for honest people who use them, but they also seem to work very well for scammers who want to hide behind a US number that is very hard or impossible to trace, and that can be used in places where the US cannot get a foreign government to cooperate in bringing the scammer to justice under US law.

yeah I know, ruined my evening yesterday as well. these people should be arrested for making false accusations and threats. Just FYI to everyone out there years ago I received a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, this person spoke perfect English with no trace of an accent what so ever. he was not rude or hostile in any way but acted very professional. he gave me a name and ID number and stated that they were having trouble finding records of my 1994 and 1995 tax returns. I told him there must be a mistake -that I always file my taxes and have never forgotten. He then said "well lets try to look it up another way" and asked me for my social security number and date of birth. As I started to give him my social, I paused thinking this is kind of strange because if they have my other taxes from prior years they would have my social (and DOB). I quickly said my other line is ringing, is there a number I can call you back at, at that time he hung up the phone. This was clearly a scam not to get money right away but to get personal info so they can commit identity theft. You have to be so careful these days !! it is really unfair that people have to live like this. :(

I reported this 202-241-2083 number yesterday, however it seems like it probably will do no good. As mentioned by Elspeth above there is certain computer software that you can obtain, or even caller ID spoofing sites that let you change the number the way it shows up on caller ID. you can even change the sound of your voice. I found the true 202-241-2083 number registers to a company called "YMAX COMMUNCATIONS CORP" which is based in Florida and has some kind of change over number that routes to D.C. so these scammers simply use this software when they dial someone's number and enter ANY number they want to show up on your caller ID. I think why there are so many scams using the 202 area code is to make it look more official, so that it is coming from Washington DC. So how can they possibly catch these criminals?? not sure what else to do at this point.....

Received the same call from a poorly spoken man claiming to be from the US Department of Investigation stating I was a victim of identity fraud. I knew it was a scam as I could not understand him and he could not understand me.  I realize it wasn't the best idea but I pretended to be worried and asked what I should do - he responded but I couldn't understand what he wat saying and I finally just said look "how about you just put me in jail and I can get some sleep". Again, I don't know what his response was but he was extremely irate.

I got this same kind of call with a heavy accent on 2/25/14 at around 6:30 PM. First, I could hardly understand what he was saying but understood that it had something to do with me and my 'foreign' first name. He said that his name was FRANCIS KATH (by spelling) and his badge ID # 0105. He told me that I got an arrest warrant # AL1021414 of not paying tax which was an illegal crime. I asked my American husband to talk to him for me because I rarely followed what he was trying to explain. I also listened on another phone. My husband had a hard time to understand him as well, but he was diplomatic and polite enough regarding his accent. He claimed that I did not pay tax of the year 2008 and 2009 (without realizing that we filed a joint tax return). My husband told him that we paid tax every year and if there was any mistake, a rectification could easily be made. The guy threatened further that he would forward the document to the local police and I would be arrested and deported (without realizing that I am a U.S. citizen). My husband said that his brother-in-law was a chief police in town. The guy said that they wouldn't let him talk to us (but the police would arrest us immediately). My husband told him that he had no fear what so ever. The guy sounded very upset and said, "You think you're smart and smarter than me, ha? You wait and see you will be arrested." My husband asked for the phone number to call back. He gave this number 202-241-2083. When my husband called back it was a non-professional phone record. When I dialed that number, another man picked it up and said "Crime Investigation Report, may I help you?" My husband said that he dialed a wrong number.

My husband then called our local police and notified them the phone number. The police assured us that it was a scam (to further ask for a credit card number, etc.). I meanwhile search for that number and found this site. What a fun evening!

You're welcome.  I just posted what the REAL IRS has on it's website.  For all it's faults, the IRS will NEVER call someone and threaten them with arrest, jail or deportation - even if they do owe taxes, backtaxes or penalties.  They always mail you a letter asking you to correct the situation.  The best way to combat scams is to be informed - and that includes telling your family and friends, so they know.  As they say "forewarned is fore-armed."  :)
