WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

John Smith called me and represented himself as IRS tax crime unit investigator. He left a message that it's very important that I call him the same day. I called him back but he wasn't available. later on John White called me and told me that I own the IRS  money and he give me a choice to pay it or face severe punishment. He gave me half an hour to comply. This fellow spoke very poor English with south Asian accent.. He told me that in half an hour 3 police officers will be at my doorsteps to arrest me and hang up the phone. After this unpleasant conversation I called IRS and reported this accident to them.

John Smith called me and represented himself as IRS tax crime unit investigator. He left a message that it's very important that I call him the same day. I called him back but he wasn't available. later on John White called me and told me that I own the IRS $1800 and he give me a choice to pay it or face severe punishment. He gave me half an hour to comply. This fellow spoke very poor English with south Asian accent. When I refused to pay and asked him for more details he told me that he can't disclose all the information. He told me that in half an hour 3 police officers will be at my doorsteps to arrest me and my wife and hang up the phone. After this unpleasant conversation I called police and reported this accident to them. I also requested my credit score report to check for any suspicious activity. IRS always sends you a letter in the mail. When you receive a letter you need to call the person who prepared your income tax return and show the letter to this person to make sure it's not fake. It's all fraud folks I hope they will be caught one day.

Prank Call
I got a call from 202-241-4886, on May 3rd. introducing himself as MARK WATSON, from IRS investigation criminal division, and pretty much the same message as above respondants. I called, out of curiosity, and left message, for him to call me. He called back and left another message, just like the first one !!I did notattempt to call again.

This PM, I got a call from a SARA LOPEZ, who pretty much said not the same, but a similar threatening message. She left her number as: 888-5080-149

Yes, I have received a call from this number that left a threatening message on my answering service.  According to the caller ID, the call was from (202) 421-4886.  The time was 12:23 PM PST on May 14, 2014.  The exact message was (at least what was discernible from some of the slurs and the the not quite good English grammar):  "Hi, this is John Smith calling from the tax crime investigation unit of the IRS. The reason to this call is to inform that IRS has issued an arrest warrant against you and your physical property, are under investigation. Call me back to get more information about this case.  My  number 202-421-4886.  Again that number area code 202-421-4886.  It's very important to hear from you today."  Apparently, it is a scam.  It is tremendously disturbing, therefore, I am leaving this message to several sites that discuss "unfriendly" calls from this number.

Received a phone call from John smith this morning. He left a message saying that I have a warrant out for my arrest, and I need to contact him ASAP. Foolish of me I called him Back. He told me to listen and to not interrupt him. I listened for a couple minutes, and couldn't listen anymore. Instead i gave him a piece of my mind. Told him to never call or threaten me with arrest again. I don't care who you are.  SCAM

Also got a call today from John Smith claiming to be from IRS investigative services. Left a message saying a warrant was issued for me and my property. IRS usually sends  letters. Also, if they're gonna arrest you, they're just gonna come and get you and not call and leave a message. I just don't get the point if these calls. What were they hoping to get from all these people, including me?! Pathetic.

I got the same call from "John Smith from the IRS Criminal Investigation unit" telling to call him back ASAP, as due to a criminal investigation an arrest warrant has been issued against me and my physical property. Having read  this forum, reported the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.

I have received multiple calls from this number. They left me a message saying that they're calling for my arrest and that the police are on their way to arrest me from my home. When I refuse to talk to them the man on the phone yelled at me and told me that I am going to be arrested and then he hung up the phone. After that Unpleasant conversation I called the number back the same voice answered and I told them that they are messing and threatening the wrong person. I called them back every minute for three hours leaving the messages letting them know that they belong in jail they will rot in jail for the rest of their lives.  they have no right to scam people and take their money.

I first received the scam call on Friday May 2, around noon time it came from area code 206-414-4646
( which I got from my caller ID) They said it was the IRS "dept. I assumed it was bogus, the IRS only sends letters. Called the IRS and got the "TIGTA ( Treasury Inspector General etc ) phone # and e-mail address to report IRS impersonators. Don't even know if that e-mail address was accurate. Then more calls came later that day saying I was being investigated. Then today (May 5th) I got a call stating there was a warrant for my arrest. Called an attorney who was smart enough to realize you can "google" the 202-241-4886 phone #.  I had never thought of that. When someone called and said they were issuing a warrant for my arrest.. that was very scary!! So I feel better now knowing no one is going to knock on my door tonight. I did however sign up with Life Lock (just in case) in order  to protect my bank accounts credit cards, etc and check on my credit report each day for any unusual activity.

Called my number twice in 30 minutes, no one actually on the line as it was a pre-recorded message " This is Jack Smith with Internal Revenue Service we have a warrant for you at your physical address, you must call 202-241-4886 immediately". Called number back and a very garbled voice prompt for Mark Smith indicated there was no room left for further messages. I have no issues with the IRS and do not live in DC where number originates from.
