I got a call and he said he was from the NSA and that my computer was trying to hack their PCs and offered to help stop it. He had an odd accent. I said "You aren't from the NSA, you're obviously out of country. Where are you, really?" To my pleasant surprise, he actually said "I am very very sorry. This is not the NSA. I am actually from Afghanistan. I am very sorry. I am just doing my job." I laughed lightly and he laughed along and I asked him to tell his cohorts not to call me again, and he said "OK. Cheers." And hung up. This was 2 days ago, and I haven't gotten a call since.

My roommate answered the call for me.  She offered to take a message but he misdirected and wanted to speak to her suddenly 'what's your name?'.  When she refused because she didn't know who he was and wouldn't just give her information out he eventually caved and said his name was Dennis Williams from Canadian Domain Family.  She doubted the name has he had a very strong East Indian accent.   After more back and forth he finally just became very quiet for some time and when she said 'hello, are you still there?' He said 'I can't do this.  This is a computer scam. I'm sorry, goodbye.'

Just got one of these calls.  This time the man said he was calling from the California department of Homeland security and that my "computer system" had been compromised in Russia and Canada and that this was a computer complaint call.   Very bizarre and clearly an international number.

Indian or Pakistani accented fellow called. Insisted I had a serious issue with my computer. I am in Canada.
I advised I was working on a corporate VPN and he would never know that. I asked him to give me his phone number, and I'll call you back. He said he could not do that. But I could look up his company at www.whatsmydns.com . Well there is a website, like that, but I doubt it was him. At any rate very persistent, and I insisted there is no way he was able to view my corporate network on a VPN and all of a sudden he was gone.

And yes - when you google the number he called from 202-282-8000 it does come up as Homeland Security in Washington DC. But definitly not who was actually calling.

I myself just got a call from same number, same line about computer virus, and him being with Canadian Law enforcement. I called the number back reaching the homeland security of the untied states. The operator was quite rude, when I mentioned that someone has been calling from this number. She stated that they have done a investigation and corrected the problem. I mentioned to her the gentlemen just called from this number, she got rude and hung up after saying a few things. My thought is if this is the Department of Homeland Security who protects the US, and they cannot even keep their phones secure from getting hacked, No wonder there is a issue with terrorist in the world. Glad to live in Canada.

There seem to be a few variations of this scam being run from the same place using the US Department of Homeland Security operator number to fool your caller ID. I actually called the number back before looking it up and yelled at a woman who answered by saying "Hello, Department of Homeland Security". I questioned her about where she was and why a Canadian citizen should be receiving a call from the US DHC in regards to the security of my personal computer...lol...she did her best to explain to me, through my yelling, that there was a scam going on that was using the DHC phone number. I still thought that I had just called back the scammers and was hearing the "defensive" portion of the scam. After angrily hanging up and doing some research, I discovered that I had just raged on an operator at the actual DHC. Whoops, lol. Whats most concerning to me is that some of these scams seem to be aimed at getting people to let the scammer hack your PC. This is a bit scarier to me than the idea of someone trying to sell some useless antivirus or security software through deception and intimidation. Here's where the conspiracy theorist puts together the fact that the scam callers all seem to exhibit middle eastern accents and that all the angry return calls are serving to clog the arteries of the ACTUAL US Department of Homeland Security. ?!?! Things that make you go hmmmmm....

Same as above. I've got SO many calls from these people over the last year that now I never answer my phone unless the number on display is known to me. I have informed them EVERYTIME that I KNOW its a scam. I'm no idiot. I KNOW Microsoft, nor any other company would cold call me because I had a "virus" on my computer. I used to have fun with them and just keep them on the phone as long as possible pranking THEM back...unfortunately they call so often even THAT got dull. Why can't someone do something to stop these people??

What a bunch of bs this call was.  Same as what people said above.  What bothered me was he was extremely aggressive. Did follow up with a call to the fraud department.  I wish these calls would end.

I got the same call from a Arab Background at 3:54 pm on 02/24/14.  He was hard to understand.  He said that he was from the Department of Security and that my computer was sending out spam, and that I needed to give him my SID and logon.  The number came through V02241554340003 displaying 202-282-8000.  I told him that my computer was disconnected which it was and that this was another call from a scammer.  I told him that if it was the Department of Security; please send a letter to me and I will follow up.  He went on and on about connecting to my computer and I told him that the Canadian Security will be locking him up for fraud and he hung up.

Of all the "There is something wrong with your computer" scams, that was a good one. Talk about a way too elaborate scam attempt. Many red flags. A Washington, DC number telling you to call an Ottawa, Canada number? Mexicans have gotten into your computer? Wot? By bus? 269 Laurier Ave West? Are they in the Tim Horton's? Ah ha! Now I know why Timmy's stopped selling the dutchie! Far too funny!

Got the same call from Adolbh Wilson I D # AWD101. He called from 202-282-8000 which is from District of Colombia.but told me I could check on him And call him back at 613-944-4874 Canadian Domain Server.
At 269 Laurier Ave West, Ottawa
He said Mexicans had gotten into my computer. He said they were blocking the warnings he has been trying to send me. He needed to shut down my Microsoft to stop this guy and protect me. He gave me a computer ID # that only he had access to... It was a long series of letters and numbers. I asked him to call back in a few days. He never did.

Yep same crap. Said my computer was hacked by 2 political organizations in Mexico.    Said to press the little box with flags on the left side of computer and the letter R at the same time and then tell me the number cause only he and I had that number.  I said I needed to check it out first to make sure it was legit.  I may have been born at night but it wasn't last night!!  Not giving some stranger numbers over the phone lol.  Same crap as the cruise scams.

Some guy just called could barely pronounce homeland security.  Needless to say the call didn't go very well.  I think someone training him told him to hang up the phone so he did.  Ever since being on the DNC list things have gotten worse.

received call today from 202-282-8000 - heavy east indian accent - called to inform me that my computer was being hacked - I to him I had no computers but he was very persistent - I gave him no information and finally hung up

Just for the record many software companies use a third party from India or Pakistan as support. On my last encounter the technician(?) wanted access to my computer which I allowed believing it was necessary. He was doing strange things at which point I turned off my computer and hung up. As I had no idea what he was up to, I ended doing a complete erase of my my hard drive and had to reinstall all programs. Thank goodness I had a back up of my files, pictures, etc.

From on now if I cannot speak to someone in English, living in North American, I will refuse any support service

Even though I knew this was a scam call, it bothered me.  Soooo, I called 202-282-8000 and it really is Homeland Security.  The switchboard lady said that a company had downloaded an app that will show any number they want on your caller ID.  She said to disregard the call, and that this has been going on for a month now.  Unbelievable the length that fraudsters will go!

Same as most people posting here.  The guy said he's from DNS (or BNS?) and that they are in charge of computer security across Canada.  He said my computer connection is being misused.  I said, "Thanks for calling, good bye".
I'm bothered that he knew my name...
