It just happened to us, too...the exact same letter was faxed to our office. We were currently attempting to get DOT business so we thought this was legit...until our bank called us this AM to let us know someone had sent in a request for a wire transfer for $8000.00 plus to be sent to Latvia!!! Awfully coincidental...too coincidental. Could there be someone from DOT involved with this?

I also received a fax requesting our banking account information Here is what the fax cover states: (notice all the typos and semester instead of quarters.)
Our records show that you are currently registered as a prospective contractor for procurements issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation. However after reviewing your record we have noticed that you have not submitted yoru financial information release form.
Your financial institution's privacy policy may not allow it to release your financial information even to government institutions without your consent; therefore we must have such form on file before we can move on with any procurement decisions.
In August 2007, the procurement plan for the first semester of 2008 will be finalized. To be eligible for procurement with the U.S. Department of Transportation, you must submit the abovementioned form to us by fax at 202-330-5749.
Please make sure your fax is preceded by a cover page so we may correctly identify your company.
Sincerely yours,
George Mason,
Senior Procurement Officer

Yes, we also got a fax from these people claiming that they were the US DOT and were requesting financial information, since we deal with the DOT all the time, we didn't think twice about it....they then faxed a request to wire $8,700.00 out of our business account into some account in Moscow, Russia! Luckily our bank called to verify that it was Ok before he sent the wire! This is a total fraud. We will catch these idiots and make them pay everyone back that they have already ripped off. Hopefully they didn't get anything from you!

Well we received a letter stating to fax our financial account information to this number. As they were claiming to be the US Dept. of Transportation.
