My fiance received a call from a supposed Washington D.C Sherriff named Kevin Williams (202)738-1686 ext.114.  He advised her that she wa selected out of a thousand others and had won a $9,400.00 government grant for simply paying her taxes on time and for not having a criminal record!  Now she was so excited.  He said that all she has to do is deposit $210.00 onto a greendot money card from walgreens and then go to the nearest cashland and he will deposit and additional $9,200.00 onto the card!  She is three months pregnant and out of work and I am struggling paycheck to paycheck working two jobs, so you could imagine her excitement!  I mean for use, this is life changing!  So she called me at work and wanted me to go do this tomorrow and I then did the research and had to tell her the bad news that this was a scam and she was devastated!  She feels ashamed and violated!  She is the most honest and trusting woman I know and for someone to do this to her, makes me furious!  I am so ashamed of people in this country!  I am so afraid to bring my child into a world where things like this are actually happening to people.  Good honest hardworking people who just struggle to ge by!  210 dollars may not soun like much, but its all I have left after bills for gas and food for the week!  I hope that someone reads this post and they do not fall for this scam because its a horrible thing to do.

I received a call from this number saying I was being awarded a $9000.00 grant from the Federal Gov.Verification Dept with the Treasury Dept. He was needing to verify who I was, name, address, age, marital status, etc. When I told him that if I qualified for a free grant,he should already know all this info. Started questioning and told him to send something in writing. He refused and hung up on me. I never even gave him my name. I then called the sheriffs dept. in my area. He said he had around 20 calls reporting the same case that day and to warn everyone I knew.

I received this same call with all the same details like everyone- William Watts calling to tell me I had been elected to receive a $7000 grant bc I pay my bills and no criminal history, etc.  He just needed a CC# to deposit the funds onto from the New York Federal Reserve Bank.  I gave an old pre-paid debit card # and then he said to call Kristin Morgan and give her the confirmation # and she would have the funds direct deposited.  I called and she asked for $190 one time fee.  I told her to take it out of the $7k and she said that it had to Western Union.  I told her I had read about this online and that I saw where it was a scam and that I had given her a fake cc# and she hung up!!

Although government grant scams have been around almost as long as the government itself, the majority of the sites being advertised today didn't exist before the November 2008 election.

FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION WEBSITE
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt134.shtm

?Free Government Grants?: Don?t Take Them For Grant-ed
?Because you pay your income taxes on time, you have been awarded a free $12,500 government grant! To get your grant, simply give us your checking account information, and we will direct-deposit the grant into your bank account!?
Sometimes, it?s an ad that claims you will qualify to receive a ?free grant? to pay for education costs, home repairs, home business expenses, or unpaid bills. Other times, it?s a phone call supposedly from a ?government? agency or some other organization with an official sounding name. In either case, the claim is the same: your application for a grant is guaranteed to be accepted, and you?ll never have to pay the money back.

Don?t give out your bank account information to anyone you don?t know. Scammers pressure people to divulge their bank account information so that they can steal the money in the account. Always keep your bank account information confidential. Don?t share it unless you are familiar with the company and know why the information is necessary.

Don?t pay any money for a ?free? government grant. If you have to pay money to claim a ?free? government grant, it isn?t really free. A real government agency won?t ask you to pay a processing fee for a grant that you have already been awarded ? or to pay for a list of grant-making institutions. The names of agencies and foundations that award grants are available for free at any public library or on the Internet. The only official access point for all federal grant-making agencies is www.grants.gov.

Look-alikes aren?t the real thing. Just because the caller says he?s from the ?Federal Grants Administration? doesn?t mean that he is. There is no such government agency. Take a moment to check the blue pages in your telephone directory to bear out your hunch ? or not.

Phone numbers can deceive. Some con artists use Internet technology to disguise their area code in caller ID systems. Although it may look like they?re calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.

Non-American sounding, very heavy dialect, who called himself Alex from the US Federal Gov't Branch Dept tells me I have overpaid taxes and they need to refund $7k.  This could be into savings, checking or a gift card.  I questioned Alex who insisted he was American and lives in Washinton DC and works for the US Federal Branch Department.  To obtain seven thousand dollars, they need a bank number or credit card number.  I told Alex if he works for the Federal Goverment, he has my address, so just mail me the gift card.  He insisted they needed bank # or credit card # for their records.  I disconnected the call.

I received a call from a private number, telling me that I've been selected to received a $10,000 grant from the Federal Government. I was given a grant approval number MA143. I was also told to call 202-379-1926 to speak with Kristen Morgan who would continue processing the grant. They asked how I wanted the money to be transfered, I gave them a WalMart Visa card with no money on it. I asked did I have to pay any processing fees to receive the grant and I was told no. So when I called 202-379-1926 Kristen Morgan told me the grant was for $7,000, when I told her that I was told the grant was for $10,000, she told me the person didn't know what he was talking about, it was a $7,000 grant. She proceeded to tell me that in order for me to receive the grant, I had to pay a one time processing fee of $160, which would go toward a charity
When I asked her to repeat the information she hung up on me.

I received a call stating that I had been selected by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT to receive $7,000.00 in free grant money.  I just needed to provide the barely English speaking individual my banking information and the money would be deposited in 40 minutes or less. I just had to call Kristen Morgan @ 202-379-1926 and provide the code provided to me.  When Kristen finally answered she wanted my first and last name when I advised her I never gave my name she became agitated and disconnected the phone call.

I just received a call from an unknown number, and I answered because I had just spoke to my husband from home, and our number is private which makes it also come up as unknown so I thought it was him calling back.  Well low and behold I was informed that I had been selected to receive $7000 from the government....why?....because I pay my taxes and I don't have a criminal record. And like the previous posts I could have this money deposited into a bank account or a pre-paid card etc...so I gave her then number from a Wal-Mart pre-paid card that I never activated and she proceeded to ask question about myself like my age, marital status, and how I intended to spend the money, gave me an acceptance numeber and a number to call Kristen Morgan @ 202-379-1926 to collect my money.  The entire while I'm on the phone I'm reading online that this is a scam, so when she finally asked my name I hang up...well she calls right back and I confront her with the info...all she continues to say is to call Kristen Morgan, blah blah blah, I told her to never call my phone again, I hope she takes heed because the next time she won't like what I have to say.  Please play with someone else, I know nothing from the government will be free or given out at random over the phone.  Please find a real fool, because I'm not the one.  Thanks

I got the same phone call today (4/20/2012) saying I was selected for $7000.00 grant and would recieve it in 45 minutes. It could either be direct deposited into a bank account or onto pre-paid credit card, or a wal-mart gift card. lol. I recieved the call from phone number 284-663-8548. Then i was told i needed to call phone number202-379-1926 to claim the money and finish with the verfication department. oh and i was selected because i pay my taxes on time and have no criminal history. wow! freaking scammers. I gave them a wal- mart gift card number number from an old gift card that had nothing on it. then they wanted to know what name was on the card and what the exspiration date was. lol gift cards dont have names on them or expiration dates. obviously they are trying to get people bank account information and clear them out. don't trust anyone calling you saying this. the government is not going to give you any free money over the phone.

Political Call
we recieved a call from this number and were also told we had been chosen by the federal gov. to recieve a 7,000 grant. they said that they would even load onto a prepaid credit card and didnt even need a socian security number from us or anything. we were still thinking this was a hoax so we told them to call back in a bit so both of us would be present to share in the excitement. the called back and...... tada....the trick was in order to get the grant we had to make a 100 and some odd dollar donation to some federal charity. please ppl spread the word about this so that innocent ppl arent ripped off!
