They are waiting for you to call them back, hopefully scared and then they tell you hold on and they can see what they can do.  They then transfer you to a Supervisor who tries to get your social security number and address and then they want a wire transfer or pre paid debit card number. I messed with them and told them my neighbor was a cop and he called the station and said I had no warrants and they hung up and won't answer now when I call.  It's definitely a scam.

Message on my machine this morning. IRS, don't ignore, threatening legal action. Call 202-506-8085. Called back, went direct to voice-mail, brief message by lady who sounded like from India. No mention of IRS on that recording. Original message left on my machine sounded pre-recorded.

I know its a scam, but I want to find out what they want to get from me so that I called back. They verified my name and address. I didn't correct any mistakes and answered yes. They then read 3 charges against me. When i asked them what I need t do, they said that the sheriff will arrive in 1 and a half hours to arrest me. They then hang up. Strange. I still don't know what they want to get from me. Maybe someone will impersonate the sheriff to come to get me? maybe this is just their first step to lure me to do something in the coming days? I'm curiously waiting for what will happen next.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $60.00 or so.

Report the calls to the real IRS here:

? report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
?You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.

Yes, I've received a call from this number - the clue that this is a scam is that they said I need to call before they take "legal allegation" against me.  Scammers, that is not really a thing.

Got one of these calls this morning. Freaked out my wife as we did get a letter from the (real) IRS about a month ago claiming that we hadn't paid our outstanding taxes when we submitted our return back in April.

We had, and had the transfer record from our bank to prove it. We called up the IRS and someone realized that the payment hadn't properly posted to our account for some reason. They claimed they'd fixed it and we didn't need to worry about it anymore, but this call was timed just about when the letter had said we needed to resolve the situation to avoid penalties and general unpleasantness. I think it would have been obvious to her that this was nonsense if not for the coincidence of the real IRS dunning letter, but with it, she was leaning toward believing it was real.

So I was glad to be able to reassure her that the call was just some random scam and we should ignore it. Note that when the real IRS thinks you owe them money, they send you a letter with lots of corroborating information like the balance they think you owe and your social security number and so on. They don't send you a generic recorded message saying you owe them money and demanding that you call them back.

I received a message today (which was barely understandable) saying it was the IRS and that I needed to call back right away to avoid further action.  It didn't sound to me like a call the IRS would make so I googled the number and see that others have received the same call.  I'm sure the IRS would mail any important notifications as opposed to leaving a VM.

Wow this is such a SCAM!! This phone number is a ghost as it comes from overseas and NOT the (202) area code. These "people" pose as the IRS saying you owe them money. They read of a script and threaten your credit cards, driver's license, bank account etc will all be taken away, and you will be arrested for failure to pay. My mom supposedly owed $2, 859 (she did not). When we asked for the paperwork to mailed to them, they said it was too late and legal action was already underway, UNLESS we paid NOW! They wanted cash to be placed on a GreenDot card or loadable Visa, and then call them with the number and pin. They were difficult to understand due to a think Indian accent, and we could hear numerous people in the background scamming other poor victims.
So as the call went on, I finally told the scammer that I was the police (I am) and he was scamming this woman. The scammer immediately started throwing f bombs, "f$%^ you, you mother f#$%", and on and on. He told me there was nothing I could do, and he was going to continue scamming. He was extremely rude, uncaring, and arrogant. No surprise as he is a THIEF! It is sad that someone will fall for this and pay these pieces of crap money. Report this number anyway you can!!

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

This is some coward hiding behind a magicJack device plugged in at some God-forsaken corner of the world where there is Internet service.  He's no better than a common criminal using a magicJack device and your fear the same way a common thief uses a toy pistol hidden in the pocket of his overcoat to make a bulge that looks like a real gun.

You can verify that this is a magicJack number by searching for it at http://www.phonevalidator.com .

This scam has been extensively researched at
http://www.pindropsecurity.com/consumer-fraud ... irs-phone-scam/ and it was found that magicJack numbers are frequently used, and many of the scammers are operating out of India.  There is even an audio recording of a call returned to one of these numbers and a written transcript of the recording contained in links from the Pindrop Security blog.

MagicJacks are readily obtainable outside of the United States for about $100 US and can come with up to a year of free calling to the U.S. and Canada.  In India, see, for example,
http://magicjack.in .

In addition to the regular reporting channels, e.g., the Department of the Treasury, the FTC, and/or your local state attorney general's office, you might also report the abuse to YMAX Corp.  I have seen reports that they are pretty good at responding to complaints and may be able to permanently shut off a magicJack device, if necessary, so that it can never be used again.

The YMAX Corp. main web page is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com
and their site giving information on how to lodge a complaint is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com/contact.html

Note that the "contact" website gives a clickable link to a "live chat" where you can make your complaint.
