Received several calls.  Called them back.  Indian accent. Told them I was a federal investigator that I was investigating them for impersonating the IRS and for fraud.  They hung up.  Called back 3 times and told the same person the same thing. On the next call, they did not pick up.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

I assume I'm being targeted because I'm a 69 years old widow.  This is the 2nd time I received a call claiming to be from the IRS.  The 1st one had an area code of New York with a recording of a super thick indian accent.  The 1st and the 2nd one said the exact same thing.  It's pretty obvious that I'm on their easy target list.  Make sure to give your loved ones a call that such SCAM's are out there after your money.

Got the same type of automated voicemail with a 202-506-9230.  When I called immediately, a person with a Indian-like accent requested for my phone number which I refused to provide.  She immediately hung up without notice.  I've submitted the above number to the Do No Call List via www.donotcall.gov, but not confident if this will work.

I'm smart enough to know that these people are full of s***. They were incredibly rude when I asked them what they really wanted, and what they really wanted was my full name, address, phone # . I didn't talk to them long enough to give them any of this, but their response to my query "Who are you really and why are you calling me?" was "why are you calling here wasting both of our time"?"

Received call on our landline 10:14 a.m. PST 5/29/14.  A pre-recorded message, nearly indecipherable, was left by a woman or spam-bot. I did make out the words "time-sensitive, ""officer," "IRS," and to call back, "goodbye" and "take care."  We pay our taxes on time.  Whatever.

Prank Call
I received a phone message on my landline on Saturday morning (5/24) with an automated woman's voice claiming  that I needed to call them today in regards to inaccurate tax payments in 2008 and 2009.  (should have been my first clue that NO government office is open on Memorial Day weekend) When I returned the call, the brash and abrasive woman that I spoke with had a thick Indian accent and claimed that they had twice attempted to send me a certified letter giving the details of my faulty tax payments and since I had not returned the call for two days that I would be arrested in 30 minutes and sent to prison for 5 years and all of my assets would be frozen.  No information was given to this scam artist and I called the police department to make a report instantly.  Hopefully the low-life scumbags will be caught and prosecuted!

I was called twice and I called them back and kept calling them until they finally picked up and then the scam begun. She sounded south Indian or something and asked me to not to interrupt. I believe then she started reading like it was written. Man she scared me for real. She sounded like calling from a room with couple of people talking in the same room talking. Plus calling me Sunday made no sense at all. And telling me I owe money and IRS is going to take my license and everything else for five years and put me in jail for 5 years.

IRS does not put you in jail nor take your license.
She claimed he name was Rebecca Brown.

I called them back, they answered the phone with "hello?". I asked if this was the IRS. They said yeah. They told me I owed them money. I said kiss my a** and that I know this is a scam. They said "Oh really!" Then they told me they would arrest me. I laughed and screamed at them like a crazy physco and said come get me! If you show up, I'll arrest you! Oh yeah BTW, I'm a cop! Bring it! Then hung up.
