Prank Call
I have gotten this call 3 times. I was all prepared to give him hell, same issues as above, heavily accented man saying he's from the IRS.. I called back the number and unfortunately got an ad for "magic jack" phone attachment. I was so looking forward to having some fun with this jack***. And as someone else posted, I do feel bad for the people who do get taken by this fraud..

I got a message from the same number. Call it back knowing it was a scam. The first women I couldn't even understand her accent was so thick. After pretending I was scared and wilin to do what ever I could to avoid being arrested, I informed her  I was a P.O. She hung up on me. I had so much fun with her I called back and spoke with a different guy with another accent. He told me I owed a completely different amount then the first women. Then told me if I didn't pay by 230 I was going to be arrested by the local police department. I advised him I worked for the local police department that was supposed to arrest me. He then got very loud and then proceeded to call me a " f****ng idiot " and hung up on me.

Just a thank you for this site and hopefully these people will eventually be arrested for scamming as a government agency.

Received the same robo-message from agent, Heather Gray from IRS stating immediate action was needed, to not ignore this message etc. on a weekend morning, 4/26 or 4/27.   Called back the number much later and got a foreign-accented VM saying to leave a message, no identification of company or agent name given.  Almost called my CPA to make sure IRS would mail an official document, but luckily found this site so I don't waste any more time on them.
Now I know to look out for area code 202.

Also received a phone message this morning from Officer Heather. Did not leave an 800# (202) 506-9418. Called them, heavy-arabic accent; threatening a "warrant for our arrest as we have been defrauding our government/taxes".  We asked why he was calling, he asked us what our first name was, "my husband stated that he should already have his first name if they were going to issue a warrant for our arrest". Only when we asked: "why is your phone number showing up as fraud" is when he stopped speaking; even though you could hear the background noise of a call center. What else? Why to people feel that they can threaten like this?  Is there anything that we can do to report this to someone that can do ANYTHING?

The number claims to be a recorded message from the IRS and that it is imminent that I call back immediately.  People who ever gets this call please do not respond back at all !  It is some kind of fraudulent scam.  I am reporting this directly to IRS fraud center now.  You have to receive mailed correspondence from the IRS and it would never be a recorded message calling an individual.  The IRS agent personally would call you after several mailed correspondence and you have called them back.  Please beware!

At 9:51am EST on April 23, 2014, an automated (i.e. a computerized female voice) message was left on our home answer machine. This was not a live person.  It referred to them self as "Officer Heather".  These are the exact words (verbatim) that were said:

?Hello, this call is extremely time sensitive.  My name is Officer Heather from Internal Revenue Service and the hotline to my position is 202-506-9418. I?ll repeat it, 202-506-9418. Press 1 and speak with an IRS officer.  Don?t disregard this message and return the call before we take any takes any legal allegation against you. Good bye and take care. Now press 1 and speak with an IRS officer or call back on 202-506-9418?.

My wife called the # back two days later (today) and a man with a very thick accent answered. He asked for my wife?s name and actually KNEW my name. My wife then handed the phone to me.  When I said ?Hello?, He asked if he was speaking to XXXX (i.e. my first name), which I confirmed ?Yes?. He then said what I believe was, ?Do you know the nature of this call?? I couldn?t quite understand the question so I repeated it back for clarification. He then said in a frustrated voice said, ??.. ?.. ?. Mother f@ker? and hung up on me.

I was upset and given my field of expertise is Information/Data Security; I called the scammer back in an effort to scare him/them off with a few calculated threats of my own. Unfortunately, I unable to get through.  It was either busy or it just rang & rang regardless of the call methods (i.e. google phone, cell phone, home phone with & without *67).

I want to see this group of scammers caught & prosecuted.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
