There was a voice mail on my work number, it was a woman's voice, very poor English and strong accent, what appeared to me Asian accent ....telling me basically the same thing, that there are issues with my tax return and I face legal action etc. , so first I called the number back but there was no answer and left a voice mail identifying who I was, and asking that if there is an issue with my taxes the IRS should notify me in writing .. Actually my taxes are done by H&R block, this is a reputable and professional tax preparation service provider, and I trust that all the laws are followed properlyThis is SCAM - careful out there !!

I would like to see some mass Note of some sorts from the IRS - alerting people that a call from this number is not the IRS and that people should be aware that this is a scam!

DO not respond to this. Tell them that you will report them to the POLICE. I called the D.C. office. They are from Nigeria, out of the country and they use disposable phones, and will just go on to the next person. DO NOT give them any information about you. The police can't do anything about this since it is all coming in from another country.

Received a call from 202-506-9937 at 8:30 AM EDT this morning. Rebecca Brown, who had an Indian accent, informed me she was a paralegal with the IRS and was informing me there is an issue with my tax return, She told me to call back to the same number and ask for Michael Johnson. Trying to play with her, I asked how much I owed, but she would not tell me.

I did try to call back the number to play with Michael, but the mailbox is full.

I told them I was reporting them to the IRS and Interpol then he hung up.

Prank Call
I received a voice message indicating it was from the IRS and to return the call. When I called a "Michael Johnson" picked up. Heavy indian accent, a lot of background noise (other callers). He listed off all these "worst case" tax delinquencies and transgressions. When I asked for specifics (year(s), what I reported vs. what they had on their records), he kept repeating the same line about just what a "delinquency" was - with no specifics (no numbers). When I pressed him for numbers, he got pissed, said the police will be coming to take me to jail, and hung up.

IRS Scam call. They called to tell me I owed them $7000 in back payment from 5 years back. Rebecca Brown was the name that was used. You may also receive a phone call from 202-506-8952. I believe those two numbers are linked. Ask for their Badge number ID and full name next time. I spoke both with a Spanish accent lady the first time and an Indian accent sounding man. Both wanting me to make a payment or even a partial payment. They wasted my day, but I'm Thankful since they have me more on the look out for these calls again in the future.

Yesterday, I also had a phone message left by "Marion Bell" from IRS.  When I called this number back, "Kevin Peterson" answered and identified himself as an IRS RO with 6 years of experience.  I am a retired IRS Supervisory Special Agent.  I would like to provide a little background to people getting these calls, so you can understand how IRS works.

A RO is a Revenue Officer, and they work for the IRS Collection Division.   When I identified myself as a retired IRS employee, "Kevin" insisted that the IRS did not have a Criminal Investigation Division.  Well, any RO knows about Criminal Investigation (CID), so there was problem.

Here is what you need to know:
The IRS Collection Division will never contact a taxpayer until an assessment of tax due and owing has occurred.  Only the IRS Examination Division assesses additional tax, and not the Collection Division.  An assessment can take place at an IRS Service Center based on a correspondent audit, like checking on W-2's of !099's.   It an also result from an audit.

It is important to know and remember this point.

There will be at least a documented effort by the Examination Division to contact the "Taxpayer" while a tax return is under examination.  Once the Audit is completed, IRS is required to issue a Statutory Notice of Deficiency if the audit results with an assessment of additional tax due and owing, interest, penalties, etc.  This Stat Notice (IRS Speak) will be ALWAYS be in writing to the taxpayer.  The stat notice will include all kinds of admonitions about Appeal Rights, payment options and other matters.  Now, there are many ways an audit can take place; correspondence or in person, quick or long drawn out examinations that everyone hates, but the point is, there will be prior notice, letters, and clearly identified IRS employees that will backstop the process.

The IRS Collection Division only gets involved after the issuance of the Stat Notice, and never before.

Because of how the IRS audit and collections processes work, a surprise IRS phone call out of the blue demanding money with NO prior notice is HIGHLY UNLIKELY if not impossible.

If you receive such a phone call, first demand production of the Statutory Notice of Deficiency, and if they produce one, independently contact IRS to verify.  Don't pay a dime to anyone until you are completely satisfied that it is the IRS you are talking with.

Second, if it is true that an stat notice was issued with no prior notice to you, talk with a tax professional, because you have been denied your rights as a taxpayer.

I also got a call from this number stating Chris Rogers from IRS, and asking if I had an attorney.  and I was to get an attorney because i was in tax deliquiency with the IRS.  I asked the gentleman with heavy Indian accent to verify who he was and he yells at me and says we are sending information to your local police department and freezing your bank accounts.  If you do not who you are calling don't call them.  This is a scam. I reported it to the FTC  and to my local police department.  This is ridiculous, these people need to be stopped. get the word out.

Got a voice message from this number today claiming he is Chris Rogers from IRS and there's something wrong with our tax return. When I called back, I got someone who said he's Jose. Jose sounded exactly like Chris (from the voice message) and he said  Chris is one of his representatives. He said he has no record of them calling me and leaving voice message and he hung up. I called back several times and every time he picks up, I hear noise in the background and he hangs up immediately.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

I got similar phone call from a Chris Rogers claiming to be from the IRS. His voicemail was barely clear enough to understand because of his heavy accent. all I could make out was " IRS, call back before legal action is taken against you, income tax". When I called the number 202-506-9937, I got weird elevator music. My husband thought it was a fraud and I'm so glad I looked it up online. I reported this phone scam to the FTC as I think everyone else should.
