if you sent the scammer a MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number), it can be "cashed" just about anywhere.  Usually, overseas.  Your money is indeed gone.  Most likely, you cannot identify the individual(s) who scammed you, since they use aliases and throwaway email addresses.

You did not follow the most basic rules to protect yourself, even though the Western Union warning is prominently displayed.  In addition, you apparently did not read the info at this link, for helpful advice:

Unfortunately, it seems some folks neglect to read even the first warning:
"DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON?follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts."

i was just scammed out of $1600.00 for a home listed on craigs list and the guy i was dealing with called himself donald donohoo. i feel so stupid because i am a professional and he said all the right things to me. he had me wire this money to his personal assistant leona kieth. he would only test me. the same exact info everyone else has sent. i wont let this go. he f****d with the wrong woman. i will be contacting the attorney general and this is now a federal case because money has crossed state lines. i will be prosecuting this man. it isnt about the money, it has to be stopped. oh an btw don, i know the people at nbc and they will be following this story

Also after I flat out refused to send information over the internet he began to back peddle swiftly by saying he understood the dangers of doing so. I received that email earlier today. I am still thinking of a reply to him to keep him thinking I'm on the hook. I want to knock him off his game and show him how awful what he's doing is!! Then I was dumb enough to send him the info he asked for before calling the number.  I called and it gave me a google voice mail first and the second time just another voice mail.  That was enough for me to know it was a scam so I googled the number and found your blog entries.  I won't include the final email I sent him because it was quite.... explicit.

I am in West Virginia & I am EVER so thankful that God lead me to this page!  I was about to send him a "security deposit", tomorrow!

This person is doing the same thing in Minnesota. House listed for rent was 1679 York Ave, St. Paul. Same wording use in the email exchange. Using the name Shannon D. Lapointe and Daniel D Lapointe. The names he used used are those of the people who actually own the home (we checked out the property records). Email address kermanbills@yahoo.com. Gave us phone number 202-540-0793 that went to voicemail with a message we'd reached someone at Bank of America. Asked us to send $600 by money gram to a Barbara Dickens in Indianapolis, IN). The pics used were those from the realtors listing when it was on the market. We found that by doing a google search of the address. Everyone beware of this POS!

This "man" must have had a sex change operation because he's at it again, but now in the South, and now as a woman.  Maybe they think they will be more successful pretending to be a female instead of a male??   There is a craigslist listing a house for rent in Savannah, 3 bed, 2 bath. I replied to the ad, and he/she said its name was Bernice Grieco, and she lived in Brooklyn, NY but owned the house in Savannah.  I replied to her first email, asking for the same BS that everyone else posted here, verbatim.  Meanwhile, I thought it sounded kind of funny, and so I did some research on the name Bernice Grieco, and could not find any such person in Brooklyn ? although there was one in Savannah.  The fact that I couldn?t locate that person in Brooklyn ? or anywhere up north in NY, got me even more suspicious.  She sent me the address, there was a car parked in front ? I wonder if they know their house is being advertised for rent??  The scammer wanted me to send her money in order to see the inside of the house.  This all happened within the last couple of days.  I just sent it an email a little while ago telling them that I would never pay to see the inside of a house I was considering renting.  I hope he doesn?t email me back.  I?ve had great luck with craigslist in the past, having found 2 great places within the last 10 years.  This was my first encounter with a scam artist.  Thank goodness for the ability to flag a post and keep evil people like this off the site ? as best as we can!

I sent this guy an email to view the property.  I message back with details that sounded odd.  I did a quick property check and the home is worth 1.6 million.  Like it would really be renting for $2500.  I googled the first part of his email response and got this thread.  In my case it was no suprise.  Email has bad grammar and this one was just too good to be true.  I feel sorry for the people who send this guy money.  God Bless, Rob

Well he is at it in Danville, CA. Calls himself Melvin Du, Email of melvindu703@yahoo.com. Got the same identical letter as James Payne (above.) Guess he thinks we are dumb! What a b*****d! Funny thing is the house is for rent and the tenant was asian and moving in 2 weeks.

Received two phone calls from this individual on 9/9/2012 stating that he was a diplomat in Washington and that I had won 2nd prize in a national credit card competition.  The first call was blocked and when I challenged him about the "private blocked number" he called back with the unlocked number of 202-540-0793.  The gentleman, if that is what I should call him, stated I had been awarded 2.6 million dollars and a Mercedes, all this after taxes from the IRS and Customs of course.  All I had to do is go down to the local "WalMart" and get a $250 voucher of some type... at this point I began to laugh uncontrollably at this idiot...  WalMart... Really!?  Anyway, this gentleman got extremely angry at me for I guess waisting his time and closed the conversation with "I guess you don't want your money"... I returned his comment by stating .. "I do want my money, that is why I am not going to go to WalMart to give you anything"; and hung up.
