Everyone posting about this issue is getting a call from a PAID telemarketer.  Who is paying the people who are making the calls?  American Institute of Cancer Research, a legitimate charitable organization according to charitynavigator.org (a great tool to use to check out all charitable organizations).  They have a very poor rating with Charity Navigator. Why?  Simply because of their use of paid telemarketing to solicit funds.  Paid telemarketing companies typically call a phone number several times a day or week to determine if anyone is home.  This is done using a computer that logs when a call is answered to note when homeowner is home.  That's the reason you don't get a voice at the other end when you pick up or you get a recording.  Telemarketing is a effective tool that companies, including charitable organizations use to raise money.  When used in such a manner as this it borders on not only unethical but criminal means to raise money, even if the organization is a legitimate charity.  AICR is located in Washington, DC.  Call your local congressman or senator and complain.  More people doing this may, hopefully, change their methods and get them a higher rating on Charity Navigator!

Received another call from this # at 4:02PM.  I kept saying hello until finally a lady came on the phone.  She asked for someone that I didn't know, and I told her there was noone here by that name.  She asked me again, and I asked her where she got this # from, as it is unlisted.  I told her not to call my number again, and asked her if she understood that.  She actually started laughing at me.  Then she started asking me questions, like what was my first name, and spell it please.  I told her it was none of her business, and if she didn't stop calling, I was going to the Attorney General.  I told her I was recording this phone call.  She didn't care, but laughed with someone in the background.  She wouldn't hang up the phone after that, so I had to. Can you believe this......Who are these people, and what gives them the right to illegally solicit.  Again how rude and crude are these people.

Horrible people. I'm on the Do Not Call Registry, have asked them to stop, they continue anyway. Filed a complaint today and emailed them to stop all contact. Here are their email addresses. aicrweb@aicr.org; communications@aicr.org; gifts@aicr.org; webmaster@aicr.org; research@aicr.org
Next time they call I'll agree to mail their envelopes and then just throw them away so I'll cost them money. They need to be taken down.

This number has called several times a day, seven days a week for several weeks.  The call today occurred at 8:02 AM, and often the calls come after 9:00 PM at night.  There is no message left on my voice mail.  This confirms my belief that much cancer fund raising is a scam.

I have gotten so many calls from this number, and usually multiple times a day, that I feel like I am being slowly pecked to death by a jealous rooster. Even though I do not answer this number.....ever.....they have successfully gotten under my skin enough to have caused "emotional cancer" and so, whatever their research is, count me in as a statistic.

I've been receiving calls from American Cancer Research or AICR @ 202-552-1973 for the past 14 days. I can't believe that they are allowed to do this. Doesn't even matter the time of day. I've received calls at 8:30a up to 9pm. Why is this being allowed? I wish we could call these people up at 9p just to talk and ask them personal questions.

I have received calls at least once a day for nearly a month. When I answer there is only "dead air", and I don't hang around waiting for someone to pick up. If I don't answer, no message is left on voice mail.

I have call block service but it will not allow me to block this number. Wish someone would/could tell me why.

When I answered the call at 11:15 a.m. (by mistake), the woman said that the "Cancer Research" organization was not soliciting for money. They wanted to prevent cancer through education and lifestyle changes. They wanted to send me a packet with envelopes  and information that I could address to be sent to my neighbors. I would supply the postage! I replied "no" and that doing that didn't make any sense to me and would take way too much of my time. She said "ok" and did not press.

I've been getting a flurry of calls from 8:30am through the evening, once or twice a day from this # and also 866-915-0385 and "Out of area". What a pain, sometimes it is inconvenient to answer the phone, yet I do in case it is a family member, only to have it be either from some cancer-related call. I just got a call from 866-915-0385 and got the exact same spell as Estelle wrote above from July 13, 2007--only when I asked to have my number removed they wanted MY name & number--since I have been harassed by phone calls from this organization & its relations I am loathe to give them any other info. And, all these calls have started since I gave a donation to the American Cancer Society for a friend's "Breast Cancer Walk". I will never donate to the American Cancer Society again.

American Cancer calls as early as 8:15 AM until 6:00 PM.  I've had at least 6 calls in three weeks.  I appreciate the need for money and I have already made donations to some form of cancer research.  I would like them to stop calling.
I don't answer when I see their number come up.  I did once and told them I was not interested and that I did what I could for various worthwhile organizations.  They just keep calling.  It is enough to make you stop giving!

I am on a do not call list.

I have same problem, cannot unsubscribe by calling number back and FTC doesn't consider charity or political calls a complaint.  I filed the complaint anyhow.  I am not home much but feel bad for pets and sick family members that must listen to phone ring all day.

This caller has called me three times this year. Today, Jan. 13, 2008 is a Sunday. Since when are they allowed to call you on Sunday? One of the times I was on another call and wouldn't talk to them.I was not home to take the other two but when I get finished talking to them, I doubt they call me again. I had this happen to me a year ago so I called our local Cancer Society and told them what was going on.I was told that states are only supposed to solicit in their own states.Gave them the phone number and they said they would call and tell them to stop calling the State of Texas.I suppose they did as I never received another call.Tomorrow, I will call our local Cancer Society again. If I did collect any money for the out of state solicitor, I would NOT mail it to them. I would donate it to the local Cancer Society. I know a lady that did that in our city. So try notifying your local Cancer Society as to what is going on. A few minutes ago, I also notified the DO Not Call web site.

When I get these types of calls I usually ask how they got my number as we are on the DNC list.  Then I ask them to remove it from their records and almost always they are very considerate in doing so and I don't hear from them again.  When you just hang up on them, they just keep calling!

I had agreed to send out their collection envelopes before doing research on the organization,  They even called after I had agreed to be sure I was still in agreement and at the time I said "Yes".  Tonight I went to the A.C.I.R website and found their phone number.  When I called this 800 number I got a very pleasant lady who took my name and address and said she would remove it from the list and if I received anything by mail to disregard it.  I plan to do just that!

I have had the same experience as above. Calls early in the a.m. with no messages ever left. I think it is Big Brother trying to program us all into Zombies. Vote them all out of office before it's too late. Sometimes we pick up and the phone just goes blank like no one was ever there. Yesterday, I yelled hello VERY load and a guy chimes in and says he's with the AICR. I told them to never call again and take me off their list. I guess you have to YELL TO GET THEIR ATTENTION.

Said I would help by mailing solicitations.  After researching, it's not even the same phone number.  I was called from 202-495-7181.  Even if it were ligit, they only scored 1 star out of 4 possible as a charity.  Needless to say the only place I am mailing is back to them.
