Just call the number back and follow the automated instructions to have your number removed from their list.  It's the American lung Association

I have been getting phone numbers from them several times a day, including evenings & Sundays. I finally saw your post & did what you said to stop the calls. Here's hoping it works!

Do not give out your phone number to anyone.  If they ask why, say that you "no longer have a phone because it was a disturbance in your life to keep receiving phone calls asking for donations to charities, donations to politicians, information for surveys which often end up being a sales call, all the scams trying to get credit card numbers and other identity theft info, and of course all those slimy b*****d companies that think just because I do some limited business with them that I would want to be harrassed all the time to be upsold on more and more of their junk".

One thing I will be glad to buy (slowly working on making one), is a "phone valet".  It always answers all incoming calls and prompts the caller to select menu items (press 352 to leave a message, press 713 if this is an emergency, etc, press 497 if this call is important), with the numbers and order of prompts randomized every time.  Only if you are a real person really making the call would I ever hear the phone ring for you with this precious gadget.

Unfortunately, the do not call list does not apply to charities.  Your slimy congressional representative and senators made this decision.  And they also exempted politicians seeking donations and votes.

Unfortunately, your slimy representatives and senators in Congress decided that charity groups would be exempt from the do not call registry.  You should call your congressperson and both senators each and every time you get a call from any charity, and tell those b*****ds you do not appreciate being bothered by charity groups, and want a "charity do not call" list.

If it is the American Lung Association (my caller ID just gives their number and I haven't answered to find out who is calling), they are exempt from the Do Not Call Registry because they're a nonprofit organization which can call to solicit donations. Here's the list of exemptions from Wikipedia's website:

Known exceptions

Placing one's number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most, but not all, unsolicited calls. The following are exceptions granted by existing laws and regulations.

   * The registry only applies to residential lines, not to business lines.[4]
   * A person may still receive calls from political organizations.
o The organization Citizens for Civil Discourse has lobbied Congress to close this loophole by developing a National Political Do Not Call Registry where voters can register their phone numbers and ask politicians to take the "Do Not Contact Pledge". Its database is not backed by the force of law and as of November 2008, only 3 politicians running for office signed the pledge.[5]
   * A person may still receive calls from not-for-profit organizations.[6]
   * A person may still receive calls from those conducting surveys.
   * A person may still receive calls from companies with which he or she has an existing business relationship for up to 18 months after his or her last purchase, payment, or delivery from it, unless person specifically asks the company not to call again.
   * A person may still receive calls from a company up to 31 days[7] after submitting an application or inquiry to that company, unless the company is specifically asked not to call.
   * A person may still receive calls from bill collectors (either primary creditors or collection agencies). These callers are, however, regulated by other laws, such as those limiting them to calling during "reasonable hours." Some creditors may not call debtors who file for bankruptcy protection.

I just told them off for the 2nd time! We are on the do not call registry, and apparently telling them that doesn't matter. They keep calling anyway.

You are correct in that they are the American Lung Association and they are not selling anything but promoting information and statistics in America today.  Thay can do this even though the Do Not Call registry exists for 2 reasons:   (I put how you can stop this numbers calls at the bottom)

1; They are not selling anything for profit.
2; Your number was obtained through a service on the web that negated your do not call registration weather you agree with this or not.

Any time you fill anything out on the web or in person for anything and you give you information, address, email, and or phone number and sign it you are giving that company permision to solicit you via the means you provided them, address, email, and phone number.  Information today is valuable and bought and sold every day.... a company today can say that they do not or will not sell your information and they may not, but next year that company "Company A" is bought by "Company B" and company B now ownes all of Company A's information and if it is their policy to sell it then there it goes and in come the calls.... the point I am trying to make is you can't stop it all...

You can stop this numbers calls though, just call the number back and go through the propts and enter your number and your done .... after a couple days I got no more calls .... it is that simple guys usually.

BULLY phone calls should be a crime! The phone screen says Washington DC 202-607-2856. This number started calling about 2 weeks before the 11-10 election and we're getting a lot of calls. Never left a message and the calls didn't stop after the election. We are on the DO NOT CALL list. So, I finally after being so annyed by their nightly phone calls I decided to pick up the call. This female voice had my name correctly and that's rare. She says she's from the Americal Lung Association. She didn't take a breath. I interuppted her and told her we're on the DO NOT CALL list and she abruptly said that she's not selling anything so she's allowed to call. So I asked her why are you calling if you don't want something from me and you're not suppose to call ... she wouldn't shut up so I hung up. We'll see if I get anymore calls.
