WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Prank Call
Me too. I got two calls from this number today but I missed them, so I called back. A man said I under paid my tax with IRS for the past few years. I said I don't know what you are talking about, never heard IRS, and it's impossible I underpaid my tax. The n this fool questioned if I understand English and if I think he is a fool by claiming I don't know IRS. I just hang up. After checking online, now I regret not saying "Yes, you are a bloody fool absolutely".

?Eric Foster? Left 2 voice messages, had an unusual accent, that I found hard to follow and I could not "place" this accent.  The messages were nearly identical, I thought it might be a recording leaving vague threats not saying where he was from only that he was Officer Eric Foster, do not ignore this message and leaving the 202 629-9004 telephone number and demanding a return call from us or are attorney.  Obvious a nut job of some sort.  Both were left May 21, one in am the other early afternoon EST.

I received this message and resent the threatening tone. He claims to be 'officer Eric Foster'.  I would love to see these type of people prosecuted. Beware of  202-629-9004!

Got the 2nd call...but requesting a different person here.  Sounds like someone from India.  Lots of background noise.

Last week said was IRS and wanted me or my attorney to call the 202 number.  Said if I didn't, they wished me luck.

Anyway, today he wanted the name of my criminal defense attorney because my IRS case was being filed tomorrow.  I said I knew nothing of a case and he told me to call Mike Taylor at 202-629-9004.

I did not call, but did report to IRS using info for irs.gov website on phone scams

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

I received 2 calls in the past two days threatening me--"this is officer eric roberts-he gave his phone # and said if  you don't call me I will have no choice (no choice for what-I don't know) -unless I hear from your attorney-I wish you luck if you disregard this message. This is complete harassment and I will be looking into prosecuting if we find out who is involved in this.  I do work for a large city as a civilian employee with the police bureau--not that means anything or undermines anyone else--I am just more anal and paranoid  than most people.  I would love to hear the outcome of this-it had me worried as I assume it did for others.  I called his #202-629-0094 and it was disconnected.  I hope we get this person-thank you,  Cin

Yup, same thing for me today. I received the same message and number on my voicemail. Sounds like he's calling on Skype based on the quality of the call. I can't imagine what they are trying to do to scam people, maybe give up personal info or something's anyway, beware! Thanks to all who posted on this.

I too, received a call from that exact same number, not once in one day, but twice!  I was flummoxed as to why I even received the call, but I googled it, and reported it right away to the IRS fraud hotline, as well as our local authorities.  Please be weary of strangers calling you.  Especially if it's this number, 202-629-9004.

Thanks for putting this info out, too.  If not for this, I would be so pissed!  Thanks again!

I just got a call from 202 629 9004 asking me about some IRS liability case and that I need to call a Michael something and discuss this matter. I said I don't have any case with the IRS, he said oh they haven't told you about it yet? I said I don't have one to discuss with me. He said you need to call and get information about it. I said If there is information from the IRS for me I think being that they have my address they would contact me that way or contact my Tax Agent on my behalf. he stuttered for a few minutes and then I said as a matter of fact I will contact my agent who has been my agent for over 25 yrs and have her contact the IRS and give her this number as well. He again stuttered and hung up.
