I answered on 1st ring - no one there.  I stayed on line, being annoying myself, repeatedly saying, "Hello?" - Just dead air.  No background noise.  No static.  No nothing.  No one was there, even on the 1st ring.

Rang once and did not ring again.  How do folks get your number when you are on DO NOT CALL LISTS?

Call on cell phone 5 minutes ago.  Rang once, hung up, no message.  I have never put my name on Craig List.  I would NEVER return the call to see who it was.  If they don't leave a message, I could care less who it is.

If you didn't read the posts on the first page, go back and you'll find a few facts to explain your experience. The fact this is on page six explains just how many of these calls they're making.

Sorry, Steven. Why would anybody buy a list of random people, just because their phone rang? They wouldn't. They can just dial a million numbers a day, themselves. They don't care if one or ten or ten thousand people answer their phone. As long as enough people answer the phone and buy the product or scam they're selling, they'll keep on calling the rest of us, and hanging up.

It's predictive dialing that causes the one or two ring hangups. Just answer your phone faster, and you'll find out there really is someone there, wanting to talk to you.

When they calll a number, they don't care if it's valid or not. They dump thousands of calls, anyway. If they want to know if it's valid or not . . . their equipment will tell them, just as fast as the equipment some "service" uses to develop a mythical list that they can't sell, because nobody would buy it.

If you don't know how the system works, your theory makes sense. I may have believed something similar, 25 or 30 years ago, myself. Then, I learned facts about these things and began filing lawsuits. I can tell by the calendar on the wall, it's time for me to pay the taxes on the money I made, filing lawsuits. How much money has your theory made you?

The reason the phone only rings once or twice is that someone else's phone started ringing at the same time as yours, and they picked up faster. See below for a more complete description of this whole mess.

To save time for future visitors, I thought you'd like to know that on subsequent pages it's reported that this is a scam.
They want money to send you gift cards, acording to one report.
BBB, apparently, calls it phishing.

They use predictive dialers -- calling many people at one time, and the first one that answers calls all of the other calls to be dropped; so the rest of us slowpokes get nothing but a ring or two, then nobody to talk to.

As already mentioned, when you try to call back, you will be unable to do so.

Alternatively, when they called back, some posters were given an option to press a number (2?) and be taken off of their list.
Contrary to popular skepticism and belief, this probably works. After all, if you TELL them you don't want to hear from them, they are wasting their resources, trying again and again.
>> It costs them nothing to have your number deleted from the list.
>> No matter how many other parts of telemarketing law they ignore, doing this works in their favor if anybody like the FCC or FTC gets on their case.

<><><><><>
If you don't like calls like these, the best thing you can do is file complaints with FCC, FTC, and your state's attorney general. Or, of course, you could file lawsuits and collect between $500 and $10,000 for each call....and the telemarketers may have to pay for your attorney, on top of it.
                                                                                                                             <><><><><><

If each of us complains about one call per day, the number of complaints would probably jump to about 100 times as many as they get now. That would get their attention. Never mind what would happen, if each of us complains about each call every day. Even if you only do one complaint per week, you'd probably be doing something about the problem more useful than what you do now.
