The phone number is legit. I received a call from the fraud dept. called them back and they wanted my CC # I told them I did not know who they were and was not going to submit my #'s. The person I spoke to said that was ok just call the number on the back of your card, which I did. listened to the menu pressed the appropriate option and was transferred to the fraud dept. which I originally called. My card was in fact fraudulently used for a purchase. Funny this card wasn't even activated and somehow the little data miners where still able to make a purchase.

I too got a call.  I was suspicious at first, then I thought I did make three on line transactions, one in the $80 range and one for less than $10 and one for $5.  All within 15 minutes.  The call from this number came about an hour later to verify if I have made these transactions.  It was in fact, verification that I did use the card.

Some persons that steal cards test use them for small amounts multiple times to see if there will be problems before them get bold.

Some person called this morning and told me that she was from bank services, and that there were 2 suspicious charges  made early this morning and wanted to know if we made them. The problem is this. The person who called never identified themselves as to which bank they were affiliated with. Just 'card' services. When RBS calls, they ALWAYS identify themselves with who they are and what the purpose of the call is: i.e. This is RBS, Fraud Division, checking about something they felt was 'suspicious'.!
This number has been on my phone ID before, but, they don't leave a message., RBS, ALWAYS leaves a message, with some form of a 800  number to return. Don't give out any info to anyone who calls, unless you call them back and You do the asking!!!!

Not a good idea to call back a number left to you in a voice mail, banks & credit card are top of the list. Problem with the mastercard? Call the number from the phone book, back of card, or statement. Caller ID can say anything & it can be from anywhere in the world.

I too received a call from this number a little while ago.  After reading the comments on here, I called the number back.  It is indeed the fraud department for RBS Citizens.  They wanted my card number and I told them I wasn't comfortable with giving that out so they suggested that I call the number on the back of my card and they will connect me.  I did that and they transferred me over to the fraud dept.  There ended up being 2 fraudulent charges on my account- one an online one and one for a company in Virginia (I live In Pennsylvania).  I verified that they were both invalid and not mine so they're cancelling that card and reissuing me a new one.  Neither were large amounts but I'm glad they called!

This is actually the Fraud department that RBS/ citizens/ charterone banks use.  If you claim fraud on your account. you will receive a call from this number.  They will give you another number to call them back at other than the 203-551-5997

Called to verify a few transactions I tried to make online - I was buying a plane ticket in Europe for vacation and it was declined.  They were helpful and when I asked about who it was, they said I could call the number on the back of the credit card if I felt uncomfortable speaking with them.  I spoke to them instead of calling the number on the back of my card and they were very helpful.

They called me about a past due balance on my Charter One credit card. I called the number on my card, and verified the information I was told on the firdt call. Even still, I find it strange that there is a recorded message that the number is no longer in service when I call it back. That makes it look shady.

Someone called me this morning from this number saying they are calling from my bank and have some questions our my debit card. I told them i will call back. Later I called my bank and to see there is no record of anyone calling me regarding my acccount or card.

LOOKS LIKE SOME ONE TRYING TO GET HOLD OF MY DEBIT CARD INFO.

Please be careful and never anwser a call from bank or credict card companies. Tell them you will call back to the bank or credict card company by yourself. Dont take number from them to call. ONLY call the number on back of your cards.

In my case, the caller ID said "CT" meaning Connecticut, where Mastercard is based.  The caller asked for me to call back at a toll free number 888-333-0114 (which is the anti fraud dept).  I instead went directly to my Mastercard account and called the main number and listened to the voice prompts that asked if I'd been asked to return a call or letter regarding my account.  After speaking to the customer rep about a transaction they thought looked suspicious, I asked about the above numbers and the rep verified those were legitimate Mastercard numbers.  I'd still recommend dialing the numbers on your account transaction page or on the back of the actual card.

I received a call from Jennifer with RBS anti-fraud asking me to call her back at (888) 333-0114 regarding my Mastercard. I called my Mastercard company to talk to them and they have no idea who that company is and nothing was wrong with my account. I was told not to call them back or give any information to them. They are a fraudulent company.

@E: You are on the first 3 Google sites about this number saying they are fraudulent. You couldn't be more WRONG. So I'll just cut and paste this into those sites like you did.

When calling them back, they know what recent transactions you've made--a fraudulent company wouldn't know this information. IOW, don't give info out to people who don't already know stuff.

After talking with them my credit card is being replaced (which I confirmed after a few days by looking at your account online).

I would agree that calling the number on the back of the card is better than calling some number left on your voice mail by someone you don't seem to know. But if you get this call, DO NOT ignore it. If you are getting this call, your credit card HAS BEEN DISABLED for purchases.

I agree with Jason above.

This number does belong to a well reputed and one of the biggest banks of US/Northeast. There is no problem in calling them back on the number they have leave in voice mail. The return number would be a 1800 or 1866 kind of number.

The Anti-Fraud and infact the entire credit card department of that bank is situation in CT.

I got a call from this number 20 minutes after contacting my bank (Charter One) about a suspicious charge on my checking account.  A fraud claim was filed and my debit card canceled.  I was told by the Charter One representative that I would get a call from Charter One's Fraud Investigations unit to discuss the claim.  This is the number for Charter One's Fraud Investigations.  It is 100% legit.

I was involved in a very complex fraud case that involved many victims. I filed fraud charges with Citizens Bank and was released from the fraud due to the person pleading guilty to the charges and having gone to jail. Phone number 203-551-5997 is an outgoing number for the citizens fraud department. I had the investigator's direct number and called her regarding having my credit fixed with the credit bureaus and she called me back from this number. It is a legitimate bank number, however I imagine that it is possible for someone to rogue their phone number to come up as this number since it is a legit number. It never hurts to be too careful, but if they are legit, they will give you a number to call them back on. It is important to know your state's laws on collection practices and to record conversations with collections personnel. You must also let the person know you are recording them, just as they let you know that they will be recording you. I am till working on getting my credit fixed and back to where it should be due to the fraud, but this is a legit person. Also, in case some people didn't know, I was informed by AES that Citizens just took over their own fraud department since they acquired many more financial institutions. They are new at handling their own fraud cases. It doesn't hurt to question things and work with the people. As always, protect your personal information.
