I am so beyond speaking with this company regarding first removing my number from their call list and also the fact that I have no desire for someone over the phone to take over my computer......I mean really????  Since I am on the 'do not call list' you would think I would have protection from such harrassment......my gosh

We get phone calls from some guy that Indian or from a different country I guess, calling regarding a windows operating system that has problems or errors and they want you to get on your computer and type a code in the run box. They do not let you know who they are, or where there coming from (company name)...This has been going on for a while now maybe about a month and a half from today date, (Thursday, August 30th, 2012). This number calls our house at least once a day or more, sometimes once, or sometimes every 3 days or so. These calls get very annoying and finally got to the point where I contacted the "FCC" and reported a complaint. I guess the best advice I could give you to not get unwanted telephone calls like this is to call your phone company and block the telephone number, or have your number unlisted so its private.

Caller ID said Quinnipiac University, number 203-582-4096.  Since I'm waiting to hear how my cousin did with her cancer surgery today, I answered it thinking it might be one of her kids' cell phone numbers.  When I said "hello," it started to ring so I hung up knowing it had to be some kind of scammer.  When to the University website and there was no such number as this one as a contact number.  Off to file a complaint with the DNC folks AGAIN and on to the blocked list they go.

Caller was identified as Quinnibiac Univ 203-582-4096. Asked if I had a computer with Windows? Asked if I was the main user? Said they were providing protection for Windows. I told them then have Windows call me.

The message now says that they are providing free medical emergency equipment to seniors if we will just provide them with all of our personal info.

203-582-4096 We have received calls from this number numerous times - the last 2 days it said Quinnipaic Univ. We have received these calls for the last few years! Yes we are on no call lists, too. They claim to be Online PC Care. But keep declaring they are affiliated With Microsoft/Windows. They ask you for info but do not like to give info. Refused to tell me where the call was from (? Indian accent ? not certain which area but have had enough friends to recognize the accent).  They seem to have seasons - They also will not stop - they call more frequently when it is close to the times people are trying to get things ready for a new school year, graduations, and winter/spring break. - At least that has been our experience.
Every year - it seems to be getting worse. - Then - they are offended and try to get you to stay on to go to their website - I didn't tell them I wasn't on Windows - we have several different OS  - I hoped that they had not extracted what they needed from a call they made yesterday - this time they got me - I went to the official Microsoft site and to several others and he actually kept trying to convince me he was not scamming, etc. - ONE BIG RED FLAG is they originate the call/contact - another is that they say things to make it sound like they are another company - and sometimes actually say that Microsoft has them make these calls, etc. - very similar to credit card scams, security systems, selling tests for your kids - for ACT, etc. They have studied the details very closely to mimic them. If you have contact with them - call the company that you are really with - and ask them directly - or look online BUT NEVER GO TO THE ADDRESS THEY TELL YOU - IT ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE CONNECTED TO INFO ON GOOGLE - SO I WONDER IF THEY EXTRACT THEIR INFO FROM GOOGLE USERS. Just beware - do not be afraid to be rude - although do not stay online with them - they do not quit ? and will keep trying to find a way to get you to connect to their site(s).

SCAM ALERT - "Windows Event Viewer" - SCAM!!!
I took a call from these folks today. I was very curious since the caller ID came across as Quinnipiac Univ. but it was clearly not the university. I gathered some info - see below.

A woman with a heavy accent told me she was not selling anything - just wanted to help me check my windows based computer. When I questioned her as to what company she was calling from; She said she was from "On-Line PC Care" and was offering to help folks check their PCs for problems .... saying that folks who use the internet pick up viruses, etc that can be harmful and slow down your computer. Since I couldn't understand her too well, she put a man on the phone named "Vicky".

Vicky said I could check my own computer by looking at the "Windows Event Viewer". I did look at the Windows Event Viewer on my computer, which showed a lot of yellow & red flags (error & warning  messages) on my system. Next he told me the solution to my scary problem was to have them provide a maintenace service to my computer for $47.00. After that, I should sign up for their software protection program (1 yr at $159.00, 18 months at $195.00 OR 3 yrs at $299.00). I asked "where" they were located and was told this was an international service - out of Calcutta, but that they provide a toll free number 1-888-408-4117. He also provided another number 718-819-1080. I was told my computer would be protected from all kinds of infections & viral attacks with their services.

When Vicky pressed me to purchase the services right away, as my computer was in grave danger and my system could be lost at any time - I told him that I always check with my son-in-law before adding anything to my computer. I offered to call them back, after speaking with my family. Vicky then advised that I didn't really need to talk with my son-in-law; that I could just sign up today and get my computer covered right away. (YIKES!).

After hanging up from this conversation, I immediately looked up "Windows Event Log". And I found Woody Leonhard's "Windows Secrets" web page (thank you, Woody!!).  Here's the scoop on this scam:

from "Window's Secrets",  By Woody Leonhard on October 27, 2011
"A powerful diagnostic tool, Event Viewer is now being used by online support scammers who make big bucks preying on people?s fears. As I explained in my Feb. 3 Top Story, scammers are cold-calling people in North America, Europe, Australia, and other locations, claiming to be Windows support technicians ? in some cases, gaining access to users? PCs and personal information. The con I discussed back in February described how a caller, possibly from India, contacted a Windows Secrets reader in the U.S. and claimed to be working on behalf of Microsoft support....  He cleverly convinced the reader to open Event Viewer and look at all the red and yellow flags indicating a malware attack. The con almost worked.
......... Before you get hot and bothered about the thousands of errors on your PC, look closely at the date-and-time field. The bulk of them probably date back to when you first installed the PC. Chances are good you?ll see a handful more for every day the PC has been on ? most of these are just repeats of the same error or warning. Generally, they have little or no effect on the way you use Windows; you may safely yawn and say, ?Who cares??  .................. Bottom line: If somebody calls you, convinces you to open up your Event Viewer, and requests money, it?s a con."

Hopefully, no one falls for this!!!!

My husband's cousin was the first to receive the call and asked my husband about it. They said they're calling regarding our computer and specifically Windows. My husband said in no way would Windows be calling anyone. He dealt with computers in every way for 10 years. They just called me. They asked for me by name and proceeded to tell me "who they were". I told them they were a fraud and to never call my house again. They'll probably call tomorrow, Lol.

Everytime I get a call from this number I say hello but do not get a response. I have been fooled by these people once before but never again. I just hang up the phone now. The FCC toll free number should accept Canadian calls putting in a complaint as well. I tried calling the FCC but it doesn't go  through.

Got a call from this number tonight that when I answered rang.  They asked for me by name and said they were from Microsoft and were calling about my computer.  It was very faint and my children were being loud.  When I said, "I can hardly hear you.  Can you hold on a moment?" they hung up.  I was pretty sure it was a scam, but I wanted to see what information I could get from him first.

1-888-225-5322 is the FCC (Federal Communications Commission)
1-877-382-4357 is the FTC (Federal Trade Commission)

If you look up either of these numbers on this site, you will see that crooks are using them for various scams.  Obviously they are spoofing (faking) the Caller ID information that we see.

Add this number to your phone's address book under SCAM.  Block the number if you have that capability.  Don't press any number to be removed from their calling list because you are only confirming to their auto-dialer that yours is a real number.

You should immediately report this number and the exact contents of the message to www.donotcall.gov.  Report them each time they call.  I think the FCC and FTC would be very interested to hear how these crooks are giving out their phone numbers.

But WHY?  Are they pretending to be from one of the government agencies in order to get your personal information?  Don't tell them anything.  Don't give them the time of day.  Hang up and report them.
