You can ask them to speak to a customer service representative. If you don't have a card with them, you want to make sure your name isn't attached to one. If you press the right button (the one that refers you to a customer service rep) you will not have to enter any personal data, such as birthday or SSN or address, to check to see if they have you as a card holder and/or to remove your phone number from someone else's records.

With a real credit card company you always want to make sure someone else hasn't opened an account in your name.

Debt Collector
I was getting calls from this company although I don't have a card with them. I called them on the number which is listed by the Better Business Bureau. A customer service representative answered the phone and confirmed that my number was being called in error and they did not have my information, and promptly submitted a ticket and took my phone number off the list. I did not have to give any identifying information other than my name to get her to do this.

Getting calls about a credit card you don't have could be phishing, but in this case, it seems it will either be a case of identity theft or a student giving an incorrect/false phone number.

To everyone calling names, is that really necessary? Clearly a credit card company working with huge numbers of students who change phone numbers and addresses often is going to have issues with contacting non-card-holders, but it doesn't mean we are jerks or avoiding paying fees, or that they are scammers.

In sum, this is a legitimate company but the calls may reflect an error or identity theft, so try to call them back to ensure you know where you stand with them.

I got a call from 203 466-8711 with super vague details.  No person was available to speak. Upon calling back, you were requested to input your card number. I think it's a scam.

im currently in school in MD and I have a Higher One account. The problem I'm having with them is that I purchased an airline ticket from delta that was supposed to be round trip. when i recieved the itinerary, it was only a one way ticket (to another country), Delta would not refund the miney, and higher one basically tells me since i gave my info to the site, its authorized so deal with delta...in so many words p****off.

You're a complete jerk.  Actually, this is a company used by community colleges as well.  We just got a check in the mail from Bancorp/Higher One, but realized it's the same scam credit card company that issues gift cards at the grocery store that have $8.00 in fees for a $25 gift card.

Get off your high horse!  Why do you feel the need to bully someone else who's obviously had a legitimate issue??

It is a "financial" company, they manage a lot of school's debit/credit cards and/or financial aid disbursments.  Chances are someone in your household is enrolled in higher education.

They like to call 3-5 times a day if you have not activated your card.  I checked on my school's website and it stated you have to activate the card regardless of your plans to use it or not.  On the website you choose the option to not use the card and that's the end of the annoying calls.

I just got a call from this number, and it turned out to be HigherOne, a credit/debit card company associated with MasterCard. Though I did not answer the call, the voice message left was a recording with all such information.

I have had the same problem. But instead of hurling insults at people who are reasonably angry and concerned about what's going on, I did a little looking around using my tech school trained research skills (and while eating cheetos I might add). I keep getting these calls from HigherOne for someone who does not live in my home but may attend the school I attend. I have had no need for any type of refund card as I have paid out of pocket and have not had a class cancelled or whatever. So most likely I shouldn't have been on the radar for this other than an info mix up (which should be addressed). This type of mixup is the reason people are angry and "scream SCAM". Here is some contact info that I have found. How viable it is? Who knows, but its a start. Have at it and play nice.

Some people like you are idiots and probably not even actually who you claim to be. I can not beleive the utter BS  you are spewing forth. Thank you I think I will call my State's Attorney's offfice, along with Federal Trade Commission who already certainly has a file on this company which is forced on people who should be written a check from the instituttion that owes the funds. How many other banks from Delaware do you think are out there involved in identity theft and fruad? Where have you lived all your life under a rock, good thing your SUPPOSEDLY A STUDENT WHO ACTUALLY USES THIS BS SCAM CARD.........

Have you done any other reading about Higher One Bank ? Do you know think that it is legal for an educational institution to force students to take a reimbursement from a third party bank, who has a horrible reputation far and wide. Do you in your infinite 'real college' wisdom of the ages think it is normal for documentation regarding a refund owed  to have language discussing a negative balance? Why would someone have a negative balance when they are simply owed an amount of money? DID YOU EVER AGREE TO IN WRITING IN THE FIRST PLACE TO RECEIVE REIMBURESEMENT THIS WAY? Good luck being the rather educated lemming following all the other spineless moron lemmings over the cliff. At least you can get screwed out of your money and have your identity stolen while attending a 'real school'.
Of COURSE i GUESS SOME PEOPLE MAY BE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT BEING SCREWWED LIKE THIS WHEN IT IS ACTUALLY MONEY THEY EARNED. I am filing a complaint with the fcc, and taking every bit of personal accounts of fraud, and identity theft I have found in two minutes online to my school, and then asking them to show me where Iever agreed to this in writing. Which I did not , just like you didn't, but your the genius.........

The company is legit.  Universities are using this as a form of refund to thier students.  You have to activate the card on the website to let them know how you want the refund.  You can chose not to use the card and you should have no more problems with it.

Higher one is a banking service provided by The Bancorp Bank, Member FDIC.  Look it up it is a bank card tha universities use.  So I'm not sure about all your education however this is a real card.  Whether someone is using it's name as part of a scam I don't know.

Just got a call from that same number. Good to know that it leads to a legit company like HigherOne, though it's still rather unsettling that such a call would just randomly come through with no one on the other end.

That aside...seriously, there are a lot of you here who could stand to learn some degree of decency on the internet. Why all the namecalling, even if someone is wrong? Does it really make you any better of a person to be that unnecessarily rude?

Wow. Some people here are idiots. HigherOne is a legitimate company. They typically process financial aid refunds for schools. The way it works is this: You choose how you want the refund from your school. If you want a check, they cut you a check, mail it to you and you're done with them. If you want your money faster, you open a "higherone" account, which is really just a no fee student checking account (same as I have with BoAmerica) and as soon as they get a deposit notice from the school, they release the funds into your accoutn same day. You can then use your HigherOne card (which is really just a visa check card) to access the money at any ATM, bank, etc. Instead of coming onto the internet and screaming "SCAM", try calling the financial aid office of any of the schools listed on their website or your state's attorney general? Durr. Perhaps they just got your number by mistake, we college kids don't exactly have the neatest handwriting after all. Oh, and they typically call to make sure you got your card too so no one else can activate it.
