My son went to the Concordia Emergency room last night but the nurse cleaned up his cut finger and sent him on his way without seeing a doctor.  It was them calling to check on him because he didn't see a doctor and wasn't discharged in the normal process.  This is probably a number used by WRHA or Manitoba Health Services so it could be from any Hospital or Clinic visit where they are following up with a patient.

204-788-8588 is the phone number for after hours/weekend home care in Winnipeg.
They called me to report that my father did not answer the door, or the phone when the home care worker
rang the doorbell and tried to phone him.

This is a number one of a few that Manitoba Health uses to call any person who has checked into a hospital then leaves the hospital before consulting with the doctor or before being examined or treated by a doctor at which ever hospital they had tried to check into. Manitoba Health does this all of the time when a person does the scenario I described above. The reason they do this is to check on a person that left the hospital without being seen by a doctor, in order they cover their a***s from being sued in case something should happen afterwords to the person who left the hospital without being seen. This happens a lot ever since the gentleman died in the waiting room at HSC while waiting 48 Hours or more to see a doctor and without being treated.

this number is the one used when they call you about an appointment with a specialist or for test results.  they can't give information to anyone other than the intended person due to privacy policies set forth by the federal government.

I have never, never waited in the emergency room for only 2 hours. It is always longer (5-6 hours at HSC and closer to 8 at the Vic). That's why internet doctoring is so popular.

Patients seek routine care in ERs, say Manitoba Tories
A growing number of people are opting to leave the emergency rooms of Winnipeg's two largest hospitals before they have been seen by a doctor, CBC News has learned.

In the past year, 10.7 per cent of patients who sought care at the Health Sciences Centre's emergency room left without being seen ? up 23 per cent from 2009-10 ? according to numbers from the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA).

About 8.8 per cent of people left St. Boniface General Hospital's emergency room without seeing a doctor in 2011-12. That's up 44 per cent from 2009-10, when it was 6.1 per cent.

CBC News obtained the figures from the health authority through an access to information request.

The WRHA defines "left without being seen" as people who register with a nurse at the reception desk, but who thereafter leave without being seen by a physician.

"We're certainly concerned about those who would leave before they are seen, particularly those whose health would be at further risk when they do that," said Lori Lamont, the WRHA's chief nursing officer.

Lamont added that a certain percentage of those who leave end up going someplace else, such as a medical clinic.   The WRHA says a call centre run by the provincial government's Health Links telephone service attempts to reach those who leave emergency rooms within 24 hours to see if their health issues have been resolved.

Frustrated with waiting

Some Winnipeggers who have left emergency rooms without being seen by a doctor say they are just too frustrated with what they describe as long waits.

Bob Kury said two months ago, he left the Misericordia Health Centre's emergency room after waiting in pain for several hours.

Kury described his pain at the time as a "12 out of 10," adding that he had trouble urinating.

"I wasn't going to die in an emergency room like Brian Sinclair," he told CBC News on Thursday.

"If I was going to die, I'll die at home."

Brian Sinclair, a double-amputee with a speech problem, was found dead in his wheelchair after spending 34 hours in the waiting room of the Health Sciences Centre's emergency department in 2008.

Since then, the Health Sciences Centre has introduced changes to ensure everyone who seeks care at its emergency room is directed by a security officer to a triage nurse who can assess their needs.

Sinclair's death has also prompted a public inquiry, in an effort to ensure others don't wait for care in vain.

In Kury's case, he said he never saw a doctor at the Misericordia or at the Victoria General Hospital, where he went the next day, but he did note that a nurse at the latter hospital did put in a catheter.

'Slight correlation'

Lamont said there is a "slight correlation" between the drop-out rate and the wait time in an emergency department.

"If the wait time is longer, we know that people are more likely to become frustrated and leave," she said.

The WRHA's biggest priority is to reduce wait times, Lamont said, but she added that its priority is to see the most serious cases.

"We know that ? people who have truly emergency kinds of needs are seen really quite quickly," she said.

Lamont said the WRHA continues to develop ways to care for people with "less urgent needs" outside the emergency room.

Those ways include a series of "quick care clinics" and a "fast-track" system that uses nurse practitioners instead of doctors.

Still, Lamont said more and more patients are coming to the emergency rooms at Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospital every year.

The health authority monitors wait times each day. On Wednesday, the average wait time to see a doctor at the region's six hospitals was two hours, although on any given day the wait can be much longer.

Event Reminder
Hospital call backs for southern MB. mainly Winnipeg and Brandon. leave an ER without seeing a Dr. they call, Someone using a patient phone this # appears, a nurse calling you, etc... Appointment reminders, even for Cancer care Manitoba. A general one number does it all type thing to keep confidentiality and follow privacy rules. Not aloud to leave messages and can only talk to the one there calling for. like a Dr. cant give info. without specific consent from the patient, neither can the people calling from 204-778-8588, as it is about that specific patient. They will call for up to 24 hours if you ditch the emergency room, to see if your alright, or have gotten treatment somewhere else.

Yes, used for all Winnipeg, and Brandon hospitals a WRHA number with many uses. As if someone calls from a hospital, you leave emerg, with out being seen, they call, but can only talk to the patient as its the law of the Personal health Information act. (PHIA). Some people don't want others to know there in emerge or urgent Care for personal reasons, same reason a message can't be left. Also If you are a patient, use one of the emerg. phones to call someone this # will also appear, but can not be called back.

This number is a government number mainly used for The Winnipeg regional health Authority, if you leave an emergency room without being seen. They will call for up to 24/hrs to see if you are OK and have sought other medical care for the reason you were at emergency. because of PHIA (personal Health Information Act) they are not aloud to say anything to anyone, Unless it is the patient there calling for.You may say you're that person, and you will find out the info. The number is also used for other health/GVMT related services connected to WRHA, Such as Well being checks, health links call back if you are disconnected, or to check at a later date how you are, person in hospital making a call, a nurse reminding of appointment, the after hours social services relay program, and Probation's Manitoba. They are not allowed to say who they are, as this would violate PHIA, as that person whom attended emergency might not want anyone to know they were there.(As in a personal/private matter) I call the hospital, or all of them to see if theirs someone I know in there, worked once when a friend was in emergency, and attempting to call, they can't leave messages for the above reasons as well.... To protect the patient I guess. But if the patient asks for a nurse to call and let's it be known there in a hospital this number will also be used, and the Hosp. can relay the message, and give the info, that the patient is in care at that hospital. Also included Urgent Care centers.

I just got a call from that number and I looked on Google and found this site.  One person said it was from an emergency room.  I had gone to the ER at Concordia yesterday because all the Walk-Ins were either closed or full.  I had stepped on a thumb tack someone had dropped at the lake and all I needed was a tetanus shot.  The ER nurse gave me the shot and said I would probably receive a call from MB Health in the next day or so because I left the ER without seeing a doctor.  So, I now can assume it is probably the call the nurse told me to expect.  I don't know if this will give you peace of mind nor not.
Cheers,
Karen

Hi, It was very nice of you to let us know what the call was about, and it did help me out! My son left the hospital without seeing anyone the other day. I don\t understand the need to be rude though and I don't understand why they cannot say where they are calling from. Just sayin WRHA doesn't really mean anything. Anyways, Bryan was very nice and helpful, but he does not make the rules, its very unfortunate that his number is now on the internet. What about his privacy? Please remove his number and last name from this post. Its not going to help anyone. He seems like a very nice man, very patient and understanding, which I am not sure if I would be. Thanks
