My caller Id showed SMI after the#. My phone rang 3 times before I answered it, at which time I found myself saying hello to dead air for about 15 seconds before I heard the disconnect. Being curious about who it might have been, I hit my redial and was answered by a recording that told me that the number I was calling was not in service at this time or had been disconnected. According to the phone directory, area code 205 originates in Birmingham, Ala.

I just got the call, compass bank, asking if I liked the service, and would recommend it. They were polite and the call took less than 30 seconds. If was the first couple that annoyed me when they took a few to respond. But all in all respectful.

I don't understand why here in USA, so many unsolicited calls happen. Obviously there is not a government body that can control or powerful enough to regulate these issues. In my whole life in Manila, I have never experienced this annoying unsolicited calls. If a number from unsolicited caller appears on the phone, the phone owner can report it to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and this government body can have that number blocked and if they are traced, they can be warned. Now, here in the US, what does the government do about this problem?

Was called alternately on my cell phone and home phone 3 times.  I did not answer.  They did not leave a message on either phone.  I called the number back.  It rang several times - maybe 10 - and then I got the screeching fax tone.  My cell identified the state as Alabama.

Just received a call from this number and no voice message was left. I called back and it was busy. I called again a few minutes later and it rang several times before a loud fax-like noise sounded.

I use to work at strategic metrics in Tuscaloosa while I was attending the University of Alabama. It's a market research company that your bank hired to survey the customers to determine satisfaction level.

All we are given is your first name and we read from a script. Alot of times people think its sketchy because it is bank related, but its nothing to it. Just a bunch of college kids doing their job.

Obviously everyone who posted on here did not really look into this very well. I used to work for SMI-Strategic Metrics, Inc.  It was a REAL company with REAL contracts from numerous banks and hospitals. We conducted surveys (market research) all day long for Compass, CoAmerica, RealYellow Pages, many others, etc. So If you had a problem with us calling you it was YOUR BANK or HOSPITAL you received service at that gave us your number, complain to them. Under the new laws passed by Congress the SMI company is still allowed to do market research as they are calling to do surveys UNDER CONTRACT with banks, hospitals, other businesses, etc. If you don't want them to call anymore you must say exclusively "Please permanently take me off your calling list." If you only say "don't call here anymore", that is not sufficient, you will be called back the same time the next year. If you have a problem, again, call your bank.
SMI is the company doing these  at their website:

This is a Phishing group that wants to get your banking information and habits. They knew where I banked at and when the last day I was there. I had told the lady that called me from SMI that I would not answer any of her questions and hung up on her.So I called my bank to check up on this SMI and phone number and was told they do not work for the bank and my bank notified their security team. DO NOT speak with these people they will try to steal your identity!

If this service is so legitimate why don't they identify themselves or leave a message regarding the purpose of the call. Then if a person is interested in providing feedback information they can return the call. Calling as "unknown caller", not leaving a message regarding the reason for calling and then the number goes to a fax if try ti investigate who has called does not seem legitimate to me. You seem defensive in your response...possibly you work for a company like this. If you do, pass it on to management that they need to improve on their customer service. Shame on the banks for using a "back door" way to get to their clients. When I gave my number to the bank, I trusted that it was for business purposes only and not for "market research" as you claim. If they want to know how they are doing send me a survey in mail so I can decide if I want to answer it or not.

This number was on my phone display, but no message. I did a Google phone number search to see who called and I found this site. I did a little more
research and found more info that I am sharing here as a public service.

The phone number is indeed for SMI or Strategic Metrics,Inc., based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (home of the University of Alabama). The company appears to be a legitimate market research business, with clients in banking, insurance, etc. Its website is www.strategicmetrics.com. I looked at their job listings and found they hire a lot of college students to do their phone surveys. I think this explains most of the issues folks had.

This number apparently contracts with banks (possibly other companies?) to conduct surveys about customer service. Compass Bank does this to me at least every other time I make a deposit. It's horribly annoying.

I didn't answer because I don't answer unknown numbers. But, I just went to the bank a few days ago. 3 days later, I get an unknown call that didn't leave a voice mail, and a google of the # reveals a page filled with people talking about Compass Bank and bank surveys. Typical! Compass Bank, stop this!!!!

I received a call from these clowns and they hung up so I called SMI (not the number that called me because it is a fax machine but one of the numbers I saw someone else post). I talked jibberish to the person who answered. It was hilarious to hear the person on the other end of the phone squirm just like they like to do to us!!

I do bank with Compass and when I tried to call back after ringing numerous times it sounded like a fax machine was attempting to connect.

Strange.

I received a call from SMI on 5/13/08.  The woman asked all sorts of questions regarding my last banking experience.  The last question she asked was what bank I used.  She never asked any personal questions but the call made me uncomfortable so I did file a complaint with the Do Not Call Registry.
