I received a call from 1-205-801-1111. The person calling left the number 1-800-254-5489 for me to call back and select option 1. The extension # was 4560 re app for retirement benefits. When I called back, I was told I had won an alert system and she would not put me through to the extension # until she finished her pitch so I hung up. I am very skeptical that this was a call from social security.

It is definitely the Social Security Admin located in Alabama. I called back keyed #3 and dialed the extension that he left on the voicemail. It was legit... regarding my online filing for retirement benefits

Called this morning and left message to get further info and left someone else's SSN. Spoke poor English and very hesitant in her speech.

This is definitely the social security administration calling to verify information on my application for Medicare and retirement benefits. Not a scam. They replied to questions I had written in the notes section of my application through SSA.gov.

It is the SSA. Called regarding my retirement.

205-801-1111 is the Social Security Administration--I just got two calls. I couldn't ID the number so I let my machine pick up, but they said nothing and hung up, both times. I called the number and found out it is SSA. I had called them earlier at another number, couldn't get through, so I decided I'd call next week. I didn't expect a call from them. I just wish they'd ID themselves and not be such a nuisance to so many people.

This phone number is the SSA in Birmingham AL. They call to verify application information and DO NOT ask any questions that would lead to ID Theft

I answered, and the male voice mumbled a name I could not understand. I said I don't think so even though I couldn't understand him. He mumbled the name again. I said It doesn't sound like me, he said sorry then hung up. I don't have any SS claims so am suspicious as to who was calling. He didn't mention SS or any company, I only saw it could be their # from this site.

I agree with Dave. Both the 205-801-1111 and the 800-254-9489 number are legit. In fact I got an additional overlooked benefit improvement I had overlooked in filling out my online request

I got this call Friday....205 801-1111
She was from the Soc. Sec. office she said. She was basically telling me that they had to check my offset amount given for retirement to Soc. Sec. If she was illegit, she knew all the 'jargon' regarding retirement and soc. sec. paperwork.
I confess, not until today, Sunday, as I was bathing, did it dawn on me that it could have been some kind of spam/illegal call. I remembered that the girl had a slight accent.
I remembered that after the call I did call my actual local SS office, this girl said, "Now what is your address?" As I gave it to her, she said that's not the address I have on file. However, she did look further and found the correct address. I just thought that was weird since I had only received 2 payment so far. They lost my address all ready? Anyway, please Lord, don't let me get scammed! That's all I know at this point....

Called my home this morning. Asked for me (I was at work). Husband offered to help. Began talking to him. Should not have spoken to ANYONE but me. He finally said just mail her a letter.

Earlier this week (5 days ago) after seeing a commercial on TV, I visited the website of a company that markets a product for Identity Theft Prevention/Protection, LifeLock.com. Since then I've received calls from two different numbers, both of which have appeared on this list.
Ironically, I have a block on all my phone lines and I haven't been bothered by telemarketers in years, until now. Coincidence? I think not! (My best guess would be Spyware at work here.)
Note: The area code is for the northern part Alabama
