I received a call from the same man about a week ago. The caller had an accent that was so thick I could barely understand the message - he sounded like he might have been from the Middle East... The things I could understand were that he was an investigator for the IRS, and that if we didn't call back, he would have to tell his attorney, and then a law enforcement officer would be at our door to force us to return to our native country. This was funny to me on many levels, because my husband and I were both born here in the US to American parents, and we do not currently owe, nor have we ever owed money to the IRS!! I kinda hope he calls back so I can laugh at him, but it's sad that he's going to eventually call someone who panics and gives him money... How do we shut these scammers down?

Same number 2062599010 called me 15 minutes back. He had my address and my information about my phone number obviously. Said that you owe 1500 bucks to IRS. Lol. Honestly he got me worried for first 2 minutes. Then I realized that, no, there is something wrong. When I asked to get paperwork sent to my home so that my lawyers can review it, he hung up. What a retard.

6/11/14 I received a call from 206-259-9010 and he left a message... I could barely understand him except I did make out the words IRS and "sorry to inform you". It definitely seems like a scam and does not sound like a legitimate call from the IRS. I highly doubt the IRS would outsource "warrant for your arrest" and "you owe the gov't money" calls to other countries. Doesn't make sense.

Received a call from 206-259-9010.  A gentleman with a very strong accent explained that he was calling from the IRS and then began "We have issued a warrant against you...."  I started laughing and there was complete silence at the other end before I hung up.  Unfortunately, some people will panic and fall for this IRS scam.

Got the same message today, same as described above, barely intelligible, threatening legal action or be deported back to my country.  thankfully, I am from the USA and knew I couldnt be deported so automatically was a scam.  But my wife and teenage son are more gullible and not good at taking mesages, so concerns me that if they got the call I'd be calling this douche back.  I hope there is a special place in hell for scammers, better yet, since he is from India, I hope he gets some bad kharma and a bad reincarnation.

This is some coward hiding behind a magicJack device plugged in at some God-forsaken corner of the world where there is Internet service.  He's no better than a common criminal using a magicJack device and your fear the same way a common thief uses a toy pistol hidden in the pocket of his overcoat to make a bulge that looks like a real gun.

Worse, he's probably so clueless that he is confusing a Washington State area code with the biggest city in Washington State for the US Capital, otherwise known to you and me as "Washington, D.C."  Little-known facts like that confuse stupid, moronic overseas scammers.  They just look at maps and see gibberish because they don't know how to read them.

You can verify that this is a magicJack number by searching for it at http://www.phonevalidator.com .

This scam has been extensively researched at
http://www.pindropsecurity.com/consumer-fraud ... irs-phone-scam/ and it was found that magicJack numbers are frequently used, and many of the scammers are operating out of India.  There is even an audio recording of a call returned to one of these numbers and a written transcript of the recording contained in links from the Pindrop Security blog.

MagicJacks are readily obtainable outside of the United States for about $100 US and can come with up to a year of free calling to the U.S. and Canada.  In India, see, for example,
http://magicjack.in .
So it doesn't take long to turn a profit, even if only 0.1% of the people they call are stupid enough to believe the scammers.

In addition to the regular reporting channels, e.g., the Department of the Treasury, the FTC, and/or your local state attorney general's office, you might also report the abuse to YMAX Corp.  This is a fully-owned subsidiary of the company that sells magicJacks.  YMAX Corp. is in charge of assigning telephone numbers to magicJack devices.  I have seen reports that they are pretty good at responding to complaints and may be able to permanently shut off a magicJack device, if necessary, so that it can never be used again.

The YMAX Corp. main web page is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com
and their site giving information on how to lodge a complaint is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com/contact.html

Note that the "contact" website gives a clickable link to a "live chat" where you can make your complaint.

I have been receiving calls from what appears to be the same person, you can hardly understand him, he's got quite broken English.  He claims that my social security # has been compromised and that I need to call his # back immediately before it goes to court.  So glad to see that I'm not the only one receiving these calls and to hear that it's a scam!
