this company called me today and said they were going to take me to court for "check fraud". i have never written a check to these people in my life. this is the first phone call i have ever received from them and they are threatening to charge me with a felony if i do not pay them $1,232.38 by tomorrow at noon. the guy's name is alan watson, but he has a very thick indian accent. i am wondering if this is some type of scam or con artist. has anyone else received a phone call from this company demanding a credit card or debit card number and social security number? he said he was calling for "quick cash advance" but would not tell me the name of his company and asked me not to speak to any family members about the issue at hand. i am very concerned that this company is trying to con me out of a ton of money. what should i do?

ashlee, I too got a call from that number and when I denied owing any money to the company they claimed was taking me to court they tried to ask me all kinds of information about my personal financial background, then they tried to get me to commit to a debt consolidation aggreement which I declined and eveytime I asked about information about the company so I could contact them directly they kept trying to switch it back to any debt I may have that I would like to consolidate.  I contacted the Better Buissness Bureu and they are sending me a report to file against them, they are a scam and are trying to use a scare tactic to get people to give them ther credit card or banking information to get your money.

This time the person is a girl with a heavy accent who sound as if she is reading a script because she kept pausing.  She claim her name is Christine and if I  don't return her call I will be sorry for what is going to happen to me. She then says I am sorry that this is going to happen to you good bye.  I have been receiving calls from different numbers from male and female with heavy accents.  All of them have threaten me and they call me on my job.  I am so tired of this something I wont answer my cell phone if the number doesn't show because i know it is them threatening me.  I could get in trouble on my job because if I hang up on them then they keep calling back.  Someone please stop them no one should be harassed like this from someone that can speak english well.

CINDY--

the message they left me was very similar to that. it's what made me call them back. he said something along the lines of "i wish you luck as this unfolds on you" it's like a threat! i reported them to the federal trade commission, you should as well. i am glad you did not fall for it either! i almost did, and then a family member told me it was probably a scam and to ignore it. i cannot believe there are people in the world like this. so very sad!!

WALLINGFORD, CT, August 07, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about would-be debt collectors who call "payday" loan holders, threatening arrest if they don't pay immediately.

A payday loan, also known as a paycheck advance, is a short-term cash advance intended to cover expenses until the holder's next payday.

The callers claim they are lawyers with the "Financial Accountability Association" or the "Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans," and they are armed with stolen personal information from their victims, indicating a major security breach of unknown origin. The names used by the scammers may change with time.

According to Connecticut Better Business Bureau President, Paulette Scarpetti, payday loan holders appear to be particularly at risk.

"Because the scammers have so much information about potential victims, BBB is concerned that this may be the result of a data breach. Thousands of people may have had their personal information compromised."

Reports received by Better Business Bureau and posted online explain the con artists threaten the loan holders of defaulting and claim they are being sued. The imposters threaten the loan holders with imminent arrest and extradition to California to stand trial, unless they immediately wire $1000 or provide bank account or credit card information.

Connecticut Better Business Bureau has advice for consumers who receive suspicious telephone calls about an outstanding debt:

-Don't be bullied into immediate action. Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation that substantiates the debt.
-Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the telephone until you confirm the legitimacy of the call.
-If you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you, file an abuse complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online at www. ftc.gov, or by telephone at (202) 326-2222. Also file a complaint with your Better Business Bureau at http://www.bbb.org or by telephone at 203-269-2700, ext. 2.
