I just got the same call today from the Demographic Grants department of the government.  They wanted me to go to Rite Aid to get a verification voucher.  Then I needed to call them so they could tell me what name to put the voucher in, but it's for $200 that I could use for anything I wanted.  The grant is for $7,000 but Western Union will give me $6,900.  After loading the $200 in the verification voucher, it would take 10 minutes for the western union code (MTCN which they gave me) to be activated and could get the money then.

I called Western Union and they said they have no tracking number for the MTCN they gave me.  I also mentioned they they needed me to get a verification voucher for $200 first.  Western Union said it is a SCAM!!!  Do not do this!!!!!!

Interesting huh..............

No.  It's a scam operated by Indians and various call-centers throughout  India.  Been going on for years.  They can't be busted because they are in India and the Indian government doesn't really to a good job in shutting them down.

No its not.. It is a scam operation. A lot of these scammers doing this are in foreign country's and out of our reach..  Exaggerate much?

To report the fraud, go here:

Their number is listed , along with an email address, at the top of the page.

All you really got a call for was the chance to be scammed.  Good thing you did not fall for it.

I too received a call from this number.
after i talked for  amusement for a few minutes they said i needed to send a $210.00
via western union to handle "BANK FEE'S"
i told them i didn't have any money an told them i would contact them when i got paid.
i did some more investigating, and called them back..
first i heard some weird message about making free calls to the U.S...
then called back an asked to speak with a manager it kinda threw the guy who answered off.
first thing i said when the manager got on the phone was
"just to let you know this call is being recorded for the investigation that is now going to be done on you & your company"
then the "manager" flipped out on me literally started screaming saying he was going to sue me, take all my money an i dont even know when else..

at this point i am furious.

Prank Call
I too received the "You're the lucky grant winner from the Fed!" call, and even with laughably bad and obvious scams, I tend to placate the caller in hopes of finding out some useful information to report to the authorities.

They're apparently nailing some incredibly naive people with this tactic, getting them to head to Western Union and make a "security deposit" of a couple hundred bucks to a US Government affiliate in... India.  Yes, of course.  We've outsourced our legitimate jobs there, why not the con artists as well.  I'm not sure I'd call them artists - this hoax was more like finger painting.

Political Call
I received a call saying I was selected to receive a $7000 grant, tax free, never needing to be repaid.
I was given this number to call, along with a "money ID" number, and a lady's name to speak with to have a certified check sent to my home address.  The initial call originated from a local number.  I checked with my Congressman's office, and they said it is a SCAM.  My call was the third one today to them about this. I called the number to gather more info on the scammers, and msg said it is a Magic Jack number, their box was full and they could not accept more msgs.
