It seems this is going on a lot. I received the same email, with a different FAX number, still in the 206 area code, but the email sent to: address is blank, so it is obvious this is F.O.S.

I checked with my accountant, and he said that the US Government and IRS does not send this stuff via email, and second to that, where would they have gotten my email address from !!

I am sure you have also received various emails from Banking institutions claiming there are issues with your account, and this crappy scam is not different....its all about identity theft as they go out on their fishing expeditions, waiting for the 1 in 50,000 that foolishly replies.

Delete this crap or forward it to the local authorities, and hopefully they an catch this SOB's and give them a good beating.

I've got the same e-mail (I'm in France now) and took it seriousely and completed the form and tried to send them back via fax: after several attemps I tried to call that number and understood that there is smth wrong with it and I found your posts here.
I'm not still sure it is a scam, but I have to believe to the facts that I cannot send a fax to the number +1-206-339-0756 and cannot reply to the e-address they sent me from "UNITED STATES DEPT. OF TREASURY" <info-irs@irs.gov.org> with the subject RE: UPDATE YOUR NON-RESIDENT ALIEN TAX EXEMPTION and the text Please find the attached files for your information and immediate action.

I am in Italy and just received a similar e-mail.
I looked the e-mail headers and the sender was connected to the Nuvox South Carolina Internet provider, although the mail was sent through a Brazilian POP.

I think it should be very easy to arrest these craps...

Got the same email as Ken. It must be a SCAM. The tax form I was asked to fax to that supposedly IRS number, must not be sent to the IRS.

Don?t Be Fooled by Sweepstakes Scammers Posing as Federal Officials
Callers with Prize News Don?t Work for the FTC

Don?t be taken in by con artists who pose as government officials and claim consumers have won what turns out to be a bogus sweepstakes prize. Although these scammers say they represent the Federal Trade Commission or some other government agency, the FTC would never call consumers on behalf of sweepstakes programs, and consumers should never send money up front just because someone promises them a prize.

Crooks often take advantage of Internet technology to make it seem that they are calling from Washington, DC, or the consumer?s hometown. They could be calling from anywhere in the world.

To learn more about how to avoid this type of scam, go to http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt167.shtm.

The Federal Trade Commission works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices and to provide information to help spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint in English or Spanish, visit the FTC?s online Complaint Assistant or call 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357). The FTC enters complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to more than 1,500 civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad. The FTC?s Web site provides free information on a variety of consumer topics.
