Sending fake checks through the mail is a crime so contact the US Postal Service Inspectors:  https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MailFraudComplaint.aspx
Or take it to your local postmaster..

This person also uses the email address earlblanc@aol.com claiming to be a representative for walmart secret mystery shoppers. Received a check through the mail for $3380 telling me to wire transfer to Philippines accounts and keep $300 for my payment. Knew there was no way this was real. Be warned!!

I got the same thing.  I was trying to sell a bedroom suit for $899.  I received a check today for $1800.  I did not know what to think.  Luckily,   I googled it and saw all of you great people had posted about the scam.  As always,  when it seems too good to be true,  it probably is.  Thanks again for having this site so we can be forewarned.

They want you to send the money right away, while it may take a month for the check to bounce.  Then the bank comes after you for the money.  Victims can get charged with fraud, lose their bank account and not be able to get another one. They just had a story about this scam in the local news last night.
Since you say they sent the check through the mail you should print out all the emails, the email source with full headers, and take the check and the emails to the Post Master.  Mailing the check makes it mail fraud which is a federal crime.
I say the more federal involvement, the better.

I received this message from "Lisa" at blurjak@yahoo.com
Hello, I am interested in buying this as gift to someone dear to me. Please, Can you reduce the price for me? Email me back because I am hearing impaired. Thanks

and then:
>I am very glad for your response. I am believing no one has bought it yet and that is why I am offering to pay the full price on the ad. I am very busy I will not be able to see it. If the picture you showed on the ad is what it is, then I think we have no problem with it otherwise, there is something new you would like to say about its condition. I will send you a bank official check for both the actual and shipping cost. Don't worry, I will do the searching for a private transporter that you will pay when they come for the pick up. If we are moving ahead, email me back with the name and address for the bank check.

I used a PO box and I received a check for $1250.00 (for a $350.00 cabinet). FYI the check was from Citibank in New Castle, DE and does have the microprint border, the proper colors, and the fluorescent fibers.I had the feeling it was a scam from the get go but I still can't understand what the scam is. If I were to have cashed the check and not sent the furniture till it cleared (which, I realize, the check wouldn't have but in theory...) how would she have won? Conversely, if the check had bounced I wouldn't have sent the furniture so...'Lisa' still gets nothing. I would have had to pay the bank fees so maybe 'Lisa' is just a troll? Does anyone have any insight??
Regardless, watch out for this name/address!

I have been dealing with lisa harris forabout a week now. (warrenlongman9@aol.com).Same story as all the rest. Wanted to purchase furniture i had on c/l.Asked 750. she sent me a citibank cashiers check for $4500.00. Called citibank corporate office to verify check. (automated system only) was told the check was not available for deposit.  What do they get out of this?  If you are dumb enough to deposit the check and draw money from your account before the check clears...SHAME ON YOU

Fishy sign #1: Got a CL response almost immediately after posting some furniture.
Fishy sign #2: Weird grammar. I never reply to responses with weird grammar and punctuation.
Fishy sign #3: She asked if it was "still available" when I just posted it.
Fishy sign #4: Her name didn't match her email. I always input emails into facebook and google. Glad this came up.

Common sense told me to google the name and sure enough it came right up. Thanks to all for posting and sorry for those that got scammed.....

WOW! I just had the same thing happen to me! I am trying to sell chairs on Craigslist and this person named "Sophia Davis" sent me an email - however, I knew it was scammy because his/her email did not match her name. warrenlongman9@aol.com.

This is beyond creepy. Someone needs to stop this person ASAP.

Hello, thanks for getting back, I'm sorry I won't be able to come see it anymore, I was supposed to be in town but my business appointment there has been postponed to the last week in November  because i just received a notification. I would still like to buy this,Because I  need it very urgent for someone very special to me. I need this as soon as possible. This is my first time purchasing something from craigslist. I can mail you a cashier check for the quoted price, my bank sells that. Any repairs will be on me, bearing the consequences of not seeing before buying and also will be adding funds to cover the shipping to where it will be needed. You do not have to worry about the shipping, I'll arrange for movers to handle the whole shipping process so it doesn't stress you in anyway. I'll be very much delighted if it can be sold to me.  Email me back with your name, address and your cell phone number for the check. Thanks. Hope you're having a blossom day?? Write back soon.

I can't believe I found this. Unfortunately I was a vicitim.

This person emailed me about some couches. My husband and I are military and are getting ready to move from NC to CA, and needed to sell some items. She emailed me about the couches... not saying she was hearing impaired, but saying she couldn't come see them because she is embarking on a 3 month business trip to New York. I also never got a phone number either, even though I asked a million times for one (which should have been my red flag). The check I got was post marked out of Baltimore, MD. The shippers address was connected to a mini storage in Alabama - unfortunately no one by the name I was given works there. So now i'm out $1700 - which was every last cent and MORE of my moving money.

Heartbroken, I now have to find a way to get home to CA. My lease is up in 2 days, and my husband is moving back into the barracks.

I have learned my lesson the hard way - people in this world are never to be trusted.

This person "Sophia Davis" has been using multiple email addresses and scamming people even today. I got this email & what looked like cashier's check today - glad I checked this thread.

Hello,
I am comfortable with the pictures i saw on your ad and i will be willing to get it anyway. I won't be able to come check it out due to my work but i will go ahead with the purchase. I will be making payment with a Certified Cashier's (Check) to cover the cost and i don't mind you having the Check cleared in your bank before we conclude our transaction.

If this is okay with you then i will need you to send me Your Full Name, Full Address and Your Phone Number to proceed so Check can be mailed out to you immediately without any delay.

Thanks,
Sophia

The item was up for sale in craigslist for $300 and a cashier check was sent for $1100.

Hello,
I am so glad to know that you receive the check. Like i have told you in one of my previous email that i will add extra funds shipping which will be the pickup and delivery  to my cousins. I just need you to have the check deposited in your bank and go for the cash the next day or 2days time to have the cash. Immediately you have the cash then i will provide you with the delivery person information you will send the extra funds on the check to. Once the delivery person gets the extra funds sent by you then we'll arrange for pick-up at once at your own convenient time. Please kindly email me back to keep me updated with the position of things. Thanks.

This person has to be stopped.  Hope more innocent people are not being tricked by this scammer.

I posted an ad on Craigslist for a guitar. I thought this was legit until they asked for my address and wanted to send me a check.. NEVER, I repeat, NEVER EVER accept checks or give any confidential information over the internet no matter how "legit" it may seem. Here is what "Sophia Davis" wrote to me:

I received the same message about some furniture I am selling on Craigslist. The email came from the following email address: highf040@gmail.com

I had a funny feeling when I offered this person to come see the furniture and this is the response I received...  Glad I researched the name "Sophia Davis" as that's how I found this message board.  Does anyone know if there's anything we can do to stop this person?
