Here is what I do with call such as these (I never answer unknown calls nor is my VM set up).
Put their number into a loan/scholarship/real estate ... website and let them deal with those annoyances.
Not sure if it works, but I take 10 minutes to try to make life as miserable for them as they do for us.

Calls all the time.

They call and leave a message, acting like they've been talking and the start of the conversation just accidentally got cut off. The message then begins as if they've been doing some looking for you or trying to help you in some way for your credit card bills.
After yapping a bit about all the money they're going to save you, because you've been paying only X amount, etc, they tell you that this is the last time they can give you "another" courtesy call. They give you a number to call, and despite the fact that they've been talking as if they are in tight with you, and know all about your finances, they tell you to make sure to have your credit card information / statements / etc. ready and waiting for you to talk about when you call them back.
Something I haven't noticed before, was that one of the calls I received from them was a 'forwarded' call, or so my phone told me it was.
All in all, it's a pretty easy decision -- don't call them back.

thanks to all for your info; I got this call too and also heard part of the recorded message, which was something about debt relief as well

They are consumer debt helpline (or what they purport to be). In any event, their is another number associated with this number (I call this number and get a busy signal). They have called me over 5 times in the last week, and over 20 times in the past month according to my records. The other number associated with this is 1-888-261-4568. There you get a live person. In any event, I pledge to annoy the crap out of them so much so that they are too occupied to bother anyone else. So far, they have threatened to track my number and I informed them that they could if they want to, since I have detailed records of how many times they called me and how many times I informed them to take me off their list. They inform me they are a non-profit and they are well in their rights to. Not true, but they didn't stay on the phone long enough to argue with me. Will keep annoying. As of late, nobody is answering the phone or I get a recording saying all agents are busy. Using several cell phones to dial the number at the same time and I put them on speaker so they can hear each other answer the phone. It's not nice, but what they are doing to others is not nice either. They'll probably just change the number, but hey, I feel like I'm winning a little one for the little guy. Wish me continued luck! It'll work even better if others jump on board with this strategy.

On 06-01-2011at 9:49am PST. Someone called my cellphone from 1-207-493-2638, this person, or company obtained my information illegally, they are using this landline for scamming purposes, the person on the line said hello, then asked about my credit card interest rates, these people are scammers.

I just got the "uh, hello" then a hangup. I suspect they are building a number database to call those for the next date the rapture is to occur so they dont incur LD charges needlessly. That way it will be nice and orderly without a lot of chaos.
