My caller id says "St Luke's Baptist and the number. There is a St Luke's Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, TX and San Antonio's area code is 210. I just chalked it up to either a wrong number or some kind of pledge drive. But I am in Washington State. Just didn't figure.

The callers from this number are advertising colleges and universities.  However, they are calling my corporate blackberry and this needs to stop.  The callers are also, from what I've gathered so far, from India.

They've been calling daily for several days now. My husband picked up the last call and a male voice asked for me by my first name. When told I wasn't in, caller hung up on him. No reason for anyone to call here. How can they be made to stop.

We literally get a dozen calls like that one EVERY, SINGLE DAY. Who needs it?

I have received numerous calls from this number and when we answer they hang up.  The call is from Texas.  I do not know anyone from Texas, so I am assuming it is a Telemarketer.  One that does not make any money since they do not answer their phone.

Your post is very interesting, but leaves a couple of questions. Chances are, you'll never come back and read them. so we'll all be in the dark.

You're sure it was THIS PARTICULAR number, and not one of several numbers which were telemarketing calls?

A lot of people think they know why they're getting called. Things that made as much sense as "I went to a party, got drunk, and don't know what happened after that." Things that seem like they may stay drunk.

You're the exception. You were looking for legitimate information on a specific topic, and welcomed the calls. The Ricky Martin brother aspect of the one you described is kinda weird, but telemarketers use all kinds of gimmicks.

The fairly universal failure to have a clue about what they're selling if you get them slightly off script is a hallmark of someone selling something which probably won't turn out as advertised. You're ahead of them, since you know what you want, and how to ask questions to reveal what they've really got.

Kudos.

Now, back to the number. Quite a few postings indicate it is being used for a B2B kind of pitch; that they're looking for businesses and not individuals. Nothing I noticed (I didn't read all of them, so I may have missed one or more exceptions.) had any mention of the law school connection.

But: sometimes the calls come from a third party on behalf of online universities, credit card companies, business suppliers, etc. And, from time to time, they lose clients or pick up new ones. Which means several different kinds of pitches may come from the same number. And, unless the recipients keep a log of all calls for the past few years, they don't realize they've gotten three calls from the same people, and that they were selling three different things.

So, I'm curious about the possibility that the Ricky Martin law school call actually came from a different number.

This really is refreshing! Someone actually took the time to do some research, and then posted it here.

One possible problem. Donna Mealman may not actually be involved in these calls, at all.
1) She may have had the number a long time ago, but whatever records you accessed were not updated.
2) Some third party may have simply used her information.

To be sure, a lot of telemarketers engage in illegal practices such as calling repeatedly, and hanging up even when someone answers. And, many to it with their actual identity/phone number displayed.

Telemarketers have the ability to make your Caller ID display whatever they want, so 2) above. This can benefit all of us because if they have 20 lines with 20 different numbers, it doesn't matter which line is used to call us . . . the same information shows up in our CID box. Thus, we know how many times they called us.

Another thing which may be a problem is the "New Cingular Wireless." Maybe, when SBC took over, then morphed back into its original (about 30 years ago) AT&T identity, nobody bothered to change the name. But, Cingular doesn't exist any more.

But, the most problematical thing I found, when reading the rather comprehensive posting of information, is that my Caller ID said the call was from John Strong. And, for some reason, this was the first of several calls over a period of months which had ANY name in CID, at all. The others from this number gave no name. CID said "UNAVAILABLE." This, in the same time frame as others were getting calls from "Mealman."

For purposes of the lawsuits I file, I keep a log of all calls. I've never gotten one from "Mealman," using any phone number. And, I've never gotten calls from anyone named Strong. So, since only the phone number is the same, and there are three different things displayed in Caller ID at different times, as much as I appreciate the information, and admire the research which produced it, I'm skeptical of its reliability.

Especially since you gave no attribution. If you subpoenaed the records of the phone company to verify the owner and address, that's one thing. If you simply did a search, or even paid one of those "owner information" sellers, I hope you're not offended (If you're even reading this.) by my skepticism.

Another number will call you again, shortly or longly.

That's life.

The two calls will rarely be related in any way. Only if the area code, exchange, and first couple of digits of the number can you safely make any assumption. Sure, some of these folks use different -- dissimilar -- numbers. More often, the majority of them use the very same number. It's becoming more rare to see a sequence like 210-241-2345, then 210-241-2354, then 210-241-2312, then 210-241-2346 and so on. No percentage in using two or three different numbers to call you in a short period of time.

You're more likely to pick up on the 3rd or 7th call if you see the same number, time after time. One way this works is psychologically. If you get a call today, and had one or more last week, last month, and three months ago, the number might seem familiar, and you might pick up thinking it's someone you know. Another way it works is, you get fed up, pick up, and give them a chance to talk.

Either way, they'll probably keep it up until you pick up, until the targeted calling campaign is over, or their machine reaches a predetermined parameter and deletes your number.

look at the number. 210-241-2345. It could be that NONE of those numbers has ANYTHING to do with the source of the calls. But, the 1-2345 part of the number suggests it's not -- and never has been -- a working number, assigned to anyone.

What's this illegal/legal nonsense? If it were a legal cell phone, where is it, and why wouldn't the owner change numbers after all these people called back?

It's just a number. If there is any "legal cell phone" involved, they bought it (a disposable) somewhere and have used the number for their telemarketing. When you call back, THEY -- not the phone company -- play a recording which says it's a "non working number." They pay maybe $100 per year to keep the cell phone active so they can keep using the number without anyone making any kind of serious complaint. Even if there's a serious complaint, they just burn the phone (Hence the name, "burn phone.") and buy another.

There's no real reason to believe there's any identity theft going on. No evidence there's NOT any, of course. But, asking for business owners, and for people associated with a business by name, suggests it's a quasi-legal company which chooses to avoid harassment from non-business people who get these calls at home. It's legal to call businesses in ways which would be illegal to call homes.

I'm sorry you're getting these calls.

I'm sorry you don't have a job.

I can't do much about the calls -- you have to do it yourself.

I can offer help about the job situation:
   1) Spend some time (It doesn't have to cost anything, or involve a school.) learning good spelling, grammar, and punctuation. If your job applications or resume look anything like your posting, I wouldn't hire you.
   2) Spend some time learning how to file lawsuits, and if the "stupid idiots" or "scum losers," as you call them, keep it up, you won't need a job. You could, potentially, make $100,000 a year. $26,000, if you only get one call a week and collect $500 for each. $78,000 for the same number of calls, and you can prove you DESERVE and that they should RIGHTFULLY pay $1,500 for each call.
  3) I can pray for you.

C'mon. You put your phone number on Craig's list? Without editing it like "Two One Zero 241- two 345" or some other way?

My phone number wasn't on Craig's List, so that's not "the" source, even if it happens to be "a" source, for the phone numbers they use.

Edited in a way to keep it from looking like a phone number "2 1 0241-2 three 45" (You'll see lots of variations on the idea.), there isn't much likelihood that's where they got your number. Takes too much time to go through, ad by ad, looking for cloaked numbers.

If you didn't put your phone number on the listing at all -- and required anyone to respond by email at first -- then there's no way they could get your number off of Craig's List. And, if you didn't do anything to protect yourself . . . .

Even printed out like 210-241-2345 may not -- probably won't -- even result in some kind of data mining software grabbing your number. After all, they can simply generate numbers at random, and don't need any actual source. Unless you posted other useful information like name, address, etc. So, stop wondering. That's not likely where they picked your number up.

Telemarketer
The person who called me from this number was the younger half brother of "She Bang" fame, Ricky Martin.  Yeah, sure. So when I called him on his b.s., he became very upset with me and insisted that Ricky had a Phillipino father, that Ricky himself was half Phillipino, that I was ignorant for not knowing that fact, and that Ricky and their family had purchased this ONLINE UNIVERSITY for his Phillipino family to thrive. Ha ha ha ha ha! What a joke!

I DID fill out a request for information from law schools. Since then, I have received numerous calls from schools where not only do the poorly educated and informed (about their own supposed product...an online university), but their supervisors also are ill informed about their product. Most of these companies do not know what a J.D., a Juris Doctorate, or even a law degree truly is! All of them, without fail, have tried to sell me on their B.S. or B.A. programs in Criminal Justice. NOPE NOPE NOPE! Just try asking any attorney you know if they were able to practice law with their Bachelor's in Criminal Justice. It is an entirely different type of degree that generally refers to applied law rather than theoretical law. In other words, if one studies Political Science or Constitutional Law, they are considered Pre-Law, because they learn many legal precedents, which is what law school is largely about.  If you already didn't, now you know as much as these idiots need to know when they call.

If it only requires that much education to be a better salesperson, why don't they get it? But this one is all a big scam anyway, right?

Everyone needs to  contact the Federal Government and complain with as much detail as you can provide.  Flooding them with complaints is the only way these issues can be resolved.  I have even contacted phone companies and they act like they can't do anything.  My comment was to cut off their phone access!  Call the FCC at 888/225-5322 and the FTC at 877/382-4357 and file complaints.
