Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

Just change your bank account, if you are serious about not paying these vampires back. Bankruptcy attorney told me about this and it works! Send them a cease and desist order, which allows them to contact you ONCE IN WRITING. Then get on with you life, never look back, and never get another loan from a payday lender.

John White left a vm message about a loan. I called the number back and spoke to Ronnie Marshall asking me why did I call. When I said I did not apply for a loan he spoke in rapid Indian and hung up.

I find it hilarious that you are an educated college professor and actually felt the need to research this.  What a clown. They had a recording tell me to call them, The DEA, because I bought illegal prescription drugs.  I call them back every five minutes begging them to let me turn myself in.

So I received many calls from 425-880-3768 on my cell phone and then on my work phone.  The person left a voice mails on my cell and work phone stating his name was Jason O?Connor(a paralegal) and that I needed to call him A.S.A.P. and if I did not call him back then he felt sorry for me.  I called him back and he was very rude telling me that I had defaulted on a $500.00 Payday loan, he had the last 4 of my SSN, personal email, address, cell # and work #. I asked him who was the loan with and he stated US Cash Lending, when I asked him for the # to call them; he told me that this would be a conflict of interest and that I was a suspect. I then hung up called my bank, they put a freeze on my account and went to the local police department to file a complaint/fraud case.  The officer called the 425-880-3768 and asked to speak to Jason O?Connor after identifying his self as a Sgt with the Cedar Rapids, IA police department and they transferred him to Tom Stevens ?Jason?s partner?. The office told ?Tom? to stop calling me and that in the state of Iowa, if someone tells you to stop calling them and to send a written notice with their address and direct contact #, and they continue to call; that is considered Harassment.  I have not received another call from them. However now I have started to receive calls from 210-390-8365, Officer Jeb Dawson, with a very strong middle eastern accent left me a messaging saying he was calling from Federal Legally Defender Law Firm.  I work for a phone company, so I know that they can send whatever # they want.  I have to go back to the PD and file harassment charges.

I get these calls a lot. Call them back or talk to them & get as much info as possible. Play along, act scared & tell them you'll send the money. Get their address & ask for a badge number. THEN- google the real D.E.A. & give them all the info you've collected. A real D.E.A. agent told me the they would never call a person, they'd show up at your door.

All I got was this stupid email:
------------------

Texas with your consignment box this morning

Contact person Agent Anthony James
Email; anthonyjames2966@yahoo.com
Phone; 210-390-5560

----------------------
I was going to have a go at good Cathy by calling her and using a heavy/thick Nigerian accent telling her I was Queen Ima Fuella Sheett from Nigeria but I use Magic Jack and due to excessive complaints Magic Jack will not connect calls to this number, so I further checked the email details.
---------------------
The email itself said it came from Cathy Goddy in the "From" column, but by right clicking on "Cathy Goddy" in the from column and selecting "properties" the originating address showed to be:
Email: aleory@tin.it so by going to http://www.godaddy.com and in the big vacant "domain name"

I have gotten a call from these guys over the last 4 days (everyday twice a day) Saying that they are from the National Criminal Justice Department, yesterday it was the Department of Investigation and the day before it was the Fraud and Criminal Department of some company that I couldnt understand, the accent was to thick and garbled.  I told them to stop calling to which the reply was "okay I will send the authorities to your door. Have a blessed day" I only replied "You do that, bye" and hung up. This is a scam so dont talk to them.

I've received a couple of voice mail messages on my cell phone and at work by a person named "James Murphy" of "The Legal Department of Investigations" for Cash USA. He definitely has a heavy accent.  I told him to send me whatever "criminal charges" filed against me in writing.  He initially refused at the beginning of the call and was trying to seek any personal information. I explained that he is violating several FCRA laws and that I will call the police if he continues to harass me at work. His response was "Do it! Do it!" even when I hung up on him.  He then called several times within a span of 10-15 minutes and I hung up on him each time.  The last time, I told him not to call me; send me the information in writing if you have my address; I will contact Attorney Generals for TX and VA.  If his "company" breached a legal company's database, this will be my lesson to anyone that can hear: stay away from payday LOANS!

Oh my goodness, I am sick and TIRED of these Indian nationals calling me several times a week, threatening me with their "thick, hard to understand" accent.  Being Latina, I hate to sound like a racist, but when I hear someone threatening me with a strong middle-eastern/Asian accent, I almost always think that it is a scam.  The first guy who called me to harass me gave me an Anglo sounding name and said that if I did not pay, he was going to call the Sheriff's office, my driver's license would be jeopardized, fraud would go on my credit report and being educated and a college professor, I know that this is not the case as I have researched this.  The worst thing they can do (if they were legit, which they are not) is put a CO or collections on my credit report and then I would be responsible for trying to fix it or would be stuck with bad credit.  It happens every day.  (((I apologize for being scattered with this message....I am shaking out of rage and have a lot to say)

So, I called back this fraudulent number which is listed as 210-390-9024 (San Antonio area code which is the city I coincidentally live in.  I let it go to voicemail thinking it is one of my students or a friend since the area code is from my hometown.  No voicemail.  I call back and hear an Indian woman say, "hello?" when she answered.  Ummmmm.....if they were a "law office", wouldn't they answer in a more professional way (e.g.  Law Office of so and so) ?

Now, I do have a loan from CashNetUsa and they will work with you when you go to their legitimate website www.cashnetusa.com and they have a legitimate collections number which will allow you to set up installment payments.   I have taken out like 12 loans with them in the past and they have always been paid with the exception of this last loan for $1,800.  I can easily pay it back, but CashNetUSA sort of pissed me off because they had taken out more on a repayment bi-monthly interest charge and I decided not to pay them on time....and delay it.  So, I will probably call the legitimate CashNetUSA by visiting their official website to figure out how I can pay them back.

If these stupid idiots with the strong accents call back, I am going to tell them that I already paid my loan with CashNetUsa and that I will contact the FBI to investigate their as*ses!

Lastly, how did these guys get our information?  Well, one of you guys stated that the foreigners hacked into the CashNetUsa system and retrieved our personal information.  There you have it!  Do NOT listen to these con-artists!

Please do not pay them anything. If they have current bank info on you shut it down. They will rob and drain your accounts. These people are not a legit collection or business. They have stolen or purchased your info from a payday loan broker. press them on information and you will see what I am saying
