Two hours spent with these people who claim to be Microsoft. They are liars. Now claiming to be MS Technical Maintenance Dept in Florida. Avoid and don't allow access to computer. Report to police - this is a scam.First phone call ended with the man shouting at me "You'll have to pay 500 to get your computer password back". CROOKS!

Below is a copy n paste from another forum explaining the scam:-

I get these phone calls about one a week. Last time, I was ready for them: I had a machine set up with a clean XP installation, so I played dumb to see what they would do.

They pose as "Windows Support Centre", or suchlike, and say that they've been receiving reports from your computer that there's a problem. You'll probably be asked how old the machine is - however old it is, seemingly, you'll be told that the warranty on your Windows software has expired, or that you should have taken one out when you bought it. Then, you'll be talked though opening something called the Event Viewer, and shown a screen that contains a number of warnings and errors. They will tell you that this is serious, even to the extent that it's causing problems that might force your ISP to cut your connection and/or inform the police.

Let's stop here and make two points:

1. There may well be something called a "Windows warranty". However, I have been a Microsoft Partner for nearly a decade, and I've never heard of such a thing. I think we can assume that if such a thing existed, Microsoft would be sending me lots of information on how I can make money selling it. They haven't, because there isn't.

2. I've never seen an Event Viewer that didn't have warnings and errors, and I've been a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer since 1999. Its function is to keep a record of everything that happens to the operating system so that people like me can find out what's happening if something has gone wrong. Most of the time, though, there's nothing to be alarmed about - in my case, most of the warnings were due to a printer not being found on the network because I'd switched it off.

OK, so the next stage is that you get passed to the "Technical Department". This is where it got interesting: I was told that a six digit support number was being generated so that my problem could be resolved, and I was directed to a website called logmein123, where I could enter this number. Now, this is a common tool used by people like me to fix machines over the network - clients call me with a problem, I can connect to the machine and show them what to do without having to leave my office. In this case, they were going to "fix" my machine. So I let them in. At this point, we will pause for a warning:

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ON YOUR MACHINE. I WAS GIVING THIS GUY COMPLETE ACCESS TO MY COMPUTER. HE COULD DO ANYTHING HE LIKED, TRANSFER FILES TO INSPECT AT LEISURE, ETC. I WAS USING A MACHINE WITH NOTHING ON IT BUT THE OPERATING SYSTEM. REPEAT: DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST ONTO YOUR SYSTEM IN THIS WAY.

The first thing was that as soon as he connected, I could see the IP address he was connecting from, and I was able to trace this back to a company name, and trace the company back to its offices in Mumbai. While I was doing this (on another machine), I was watching a rather nasty piece of software being uploaded to my machine and installed. A bit of fiddling around, and I was asked to try running a few programs. Lo and behold, they all crashed with frightening looking error messages - remember, this was a machine that was working perfectly a few minutes before. This was explained as a consequence of the problems that I was having before, and that the diagnostic program they were running was now blocking programs that could get me into trouble.

This was the point at which I was asked for money - they started at £100 to fix the problem I already had, with an additional £80 for a simple one year warranty to protect me in the future, or if I preferred, I could give them £299 for an all-in package including fix, anti-virus software and a five year warranty. Visa and Mastercard accepted. If I didn't want to go ahead, then I wouldn't be able to do anything with it until it was fixed.

At this point I let him know what I was doing, complete with telling him the name and address of the company he was working for. I expected him to hang up on me, but he decided to argue with me, at one point telling me that I wasn't an MCSE and I didn't know what I was talking about. In the end, I just told him that if he had been in this country, he could expect to be arrested, and hung up on him.

So, in summary, I wasted my time in this way so you don't have to. If these pirates call you, don't say a word. Just put the phone down.

I have received several calls from the "Microsoft Tech" support guy as well.  The number always shows up as "000-000-0000" when they call.  They always call saying that I have a malicious program on my PC.  I did not advise him that I already have and antivirus system installed on my PC already and it does alert me when necessary.  I was finally able to get the guy with a strong Indonesian accent to give me a contact number.  I was give 210-888-0645 so I hung up on the guy and called him back at the number he provided.  Needless to say, it was not a valid number.  PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY INFORMATION AND DO NOT RUN ANY "FIXES" THEY ASK YOU TO RUN. These people are not calling from Microsoft.  I wrote down what I was asked to run on my PC, (teamviewer.com).

I just got the call form "NOVATEL" and Frank read back my CSID number to me, saying he was from Microsoft. He had an accent similar to support calls fmo India. I asked several times for identification and why would Microsoft call me on my home phone. He explained it would be my legal repsonsibilty to deal with the thousands of error coming from my computer and someone in Singapore may be using my IP address for frudulent banking etc.
Unfortunately I niavely followed instructions to download TEAMVIEWER which (after I gave the user and pswd code on the screen provided by teamviewer software) they  took control of my desktop showing a multitude of error messages.
Luckily my son's Computer tech friend rang me and googled the phone number and came up with all this !! THANK-YOU to those who posted. I shut down asap.

Re:  1-210-888-0645
Received call from this #.  "Daniel Matthew" with a strong East Indian accent and claiming to be with Microsoft wanted me to go to my computer so he could work with me on a problem he says I'm having that is sending error reports to Microsoft by my computer.

He said he could prove he was with Microsoft by the computer id number I could access.  When I told him to give me that number, since he must know it, he changed tactics.  I just told him to give me his name and a return phone number so that once I verified who he was I could call him back.  He didn't like that idea much but gave me the above name and number.

Obviously a scam.

THIS IS A COMPLETE HOAX!  When you type in what they ask you to type they are then able to access your computer.  HANG UP when you get that call.  HANG UP, HANG UP, HANG UP!  210-888-0645 is just a scam number.  They are Indians calling and trying to:

1. get access to your computer

2.  they will hit you up and try to get you to give them your credit card number so  you are "protected" with their computer security.

My friend fell for the first part, but she did not give her cc #.  This is a new hoax to obtain your private information...sigh.  WHy don't these losers get a real job!!!??

This caller sounded foreign and almost impossible to understand.  I asked for his company information and he said he was with Detrek Commercial.  He spelled it over and over for me.  I asked what state it is located in and he said California.  However I explained that the number he had provided (210-888-0645) is located in Texas.  Then when I asked where he is calling from he stated Toronto.  He kept saying your computer is infected with a virus. I said this sounds like a scam.  He sounded like a petulant child repeating "Maam, this is not a scam!" He also said "you can check with microsoft!" I knew better than to allow him access to my computer but I did try to find Detrek Commercial in a search engine and I found NOTHING.  I told him I was going to report him to the FCC.  Which I have now done at http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm  if you receive  Please report these scammers.

ps: thank you Tam for the Microsoft link.

I received a call from this # asking me to go to my computer and open it up for them, because they were receiving messages that I had viruses and something else.  He sounded like a person from another country, though he said his name was Eric Peter.  He spelled his name for me.   Of course I would not give access to someone I did not know to my computer.  I asked a few questions but knew it was a bad call.  Someone trying to access to my computer for some unknown reason.  They said they were from Microsoft.  It was very noisy, like they were lots of people like in calling pool.  I hung up.  The telephone # did not come up on my telephone.  He gave me this # 210-888-0645

This number called my house and was trying to get me to put in "eventvwr" into the run search box. (This would have opened up internet files as well as anything on my computer. If the viruses were really on my computer I would of been able to access them from my file and program search engine.) He continued to say he was from Microsoft Tech Services and that my computer was sending them messages that I had several viruses downloading to my computer and that could contain malware and some other kind of malicious viruses. After asking him a few questions I pulled up a site that helped me ask more questions. This is the address for the Fake Tech Support Call. It was a big help? if you are not comfortable bringing this site up feel free to google it. That?s how I found it.

http://www.digitaltoast.co.uk/supportonclick-systemrecure-scam

He did not verify the correct information ?from my computer?, and all I asked was what the name on the account for the computer is.

It was weird when he said that he was from Microsoft because when I asked him for his Company's name and address he said the company name was PC Software Services, and he was in the same state as me, but he sounded like he was from a different country. It was also weird that he couldn't give me an actual address. In order to get this number I had to ask him for it. When I *69 the number it came up as unavailable.

Please be very cautious of people. Had I of not known as much as I know about phone scammers I would probably of been a victim.
