the audacity of the woman "melissa or missy" that called MY biz, asked for my husband, and then hung up on ME after saying "thank you sir" guaranteed NEVER to receive a donation from MY company.

Always tell them that you don't do anything over the phone or by hand delivery. You will only accept solicitation by the United States Post Office and if you find thier materisl to be "fake" (for lack of a better word)...you will be forwarding it to the Postmaster General for possilbe Mail Fraud (a federal offense). Seems to get them everytime...or at least gives them a little scare. Ask them for thier mailing address and see what they tell you...you won't get one I am sure...

Never give donations to a stranger who calls you. Might be a scammer. Might be a legit independent fund raiser who keeps 99% for themselves and sends 1% to the charity. Best to donate directly to the charity so they will get 100% of your donation.

They called Wednesday and my husband said man was trying to collect for hospital for the Shriners then a woman called back friday and my husband said to take our number off their call-out list?
FROM: Concerned Citizen
3 Jan 2012 He wanted a donation for Shriner's Children's Hospital. I called the hospital in Houston to verify and they said they don't solicit by phone. Their Director of Development followed up on it, said the person is with the Shriner's Alzafar Temple and they are collecting money for a golf tournament whose proceeds supposedly benefit the children's hospital. She said if you want to be sure who receives the proceeds, just donate directly to the hospital on the website.

Yes, now I remember. You are correct sir.

Yep, it's the Shrine Circus donation soliciter. I have donated a couple of times and last time noticed that the receipt stated I was not able to deduct this as a charitable contribution. Made me say hmmm. Not to mention they were all hot on it to send a courier to my office to pick up the check.
As with all charities, I think it is better to donate directly to the charity so they get more of the money and don't have to give the soliciter (who doesn't have the courtesy to leave a message, which again, makes one say hmmm) a cut.

These answers are correct, it is the Alzafar Shriners in San Antonio calling, or at least it is whomever they have contracted to make the calls. We receive the calls to donate and since a very close friend is a Shriner and my father-in-law was, we did donate in the beginning. We decided about 2 years ago to say no since we spoke with our friend and he confirmed the circus only comes once a year and the solicitations are about once a quarter. When I asked the callers when the circus is coming, they always say in about 2 weeks. Which I knew was not correct. There were no advertisements for it and our friend confirmed again it was not at that time but was later in the year.
I then discussed this with the caller was always very cautious, that I did not want to donate anymore and wanted to be removed from the list. He assured me I was removed, however the calls continued in about 3 months. I again discussed with the same person, same voice, that I did not appreciate the Shriners taking advantage of me and of course received the "but you are helping lots of impoverished children" speech. So again, I asked to be removed. This last time I asked was in May 2011. At which time I asked my friend to research it for me because it was upsetting him that we were being taken advantage of. He did and said I should not receive any more calls. So yesterday, I received another call and so the saga goes. I called the main office for the Shriners and spoke to a very nice gentleman for about 30 minutes. He then assured me I would not receive any more calls. ... So now, I wait until Late Sept or Oct to see if that is true. If not I will visit in person with my attorney. They do not have to know she is my daughter.

This is a solicitation for a "donation to buy tickets for impoverished kids to attend the Alzafar Shrine Circus." The man that calls is relentless and annoying. If the Alzafar Shriner's are driven to help children, why don't they donate the tickets to their circus?? The caller ID is sometimes "Out of Area" and sometimes "D Howard" and sometimes "D Howard, SSD=20"
BJ 2011-06-06 20:42:40 Unknown
In response to Lisabeth. The members of the Alzafar Temple do purchase tickets so the kids can attend the circus and some are donated. The purpose of the circus is to fund the many Shriners hospitals who take care of crippled and burned children for no cost to the parents. How do I know? My husband is a member of the temple.

It rang, but we did not answer. Caller id showed this number. When not answered, they left no message...immediately hung up and dialed our other line. My wife answered and was solicited to purchase Alzafar Shrine tickets.

I understand what you are saying. My mother had Alzheimer's and her caregivers always answered the phone because who knows what she would agree to. What I do for myself, is call the phone company and order call blocker. It's $5.00 a month, but it cuts out the local numbers that you find irritating.
If she can't afford the extra money, ask the person if your mother's number can be removed. If he continues to call slam the phone in his ear or blow a whistle.
Personally, I am getting irritated with D Howard myself.
JJ 2011-06-06 20:42:40 Unknown
BJ it's nice to do a good thing for the burned children and those in need and glad that Alzafar Temple is there to help. What is not right is for a member to call strangers and not leave a msg. My mother is 90 yrs old and gets a called from DHoward she does not hear well and it worries her. If you are going to do a good deed don't mess it up by annoying people or irritating with an unsolicited call and not leave a msg.
BJ 2011-01-29 21:41:20 Unknown
The person is wanting donations for the Shrine Circus at least that is what he tells me. However, they ask you to leave your check taped to the door and they will come and pick it up. Who wants to do that? Talk about identify theft. Just don't answer9

I got a call from this number 210-892-0018. I have no idea who this person is and no msg. I will ignore the call. If the person wants to reach me they should leave a msg if not it's because it's not important.
