Got a call from Officer Mathew Jenkinson claiming to be from the Federal State Bureau, whatever that is supposed to mean, saying that there is a case against me and my social security number. I shouldn't disregard the message as I would be arrested at my work. Funny, my last day at this job is Thursday and they can come get me at their convenience!! Can't wait until this heavily accented Matthew calls me again..

Kept getting a call from a man who sounds like he is from India.  Can barely understand him. Claims he had a complaint from a Officer Michel Black, against my #ss number.  And I am to call 210-892-2679, or turn myself in to local police dpt, or have officers come to work with a signed warrant.

Same man called me at my work and stated that he was an officer. He instructed me to take down a name and phone # which was the 210-892-2679 and that if i didn't call within 10 minutes there would be officers coming to "pick me up". As I was talking to him I looked the phone number up and found this website. So when I informed him that I knew it was a scam he got angry, said he would send the police to my house. I asked where would the police be coming and he gave me an address in Florida, I live in North Carolina. He then said that he would be contacting my employer, so I said, here I'll let you speak to my boss. By the time by boss got on the phone, he hung up.

Hi,
I also got a call from this number stating that he was officer Michael Black and that there was a case against me. He even gave me a case number 10-89247MH. He said that if I do not respond right away that my case will be in federal court. He said that he is from the federal crime enforcement network. The guy has an accent and could not clearly explain what case it was. I told him that I know my rights and I hanged up. I called our local police department and they were all very helpful and I was told that it was a scam.

I could understand the man--he had a strong accent.  He has called my home and my work.  On 8-30 he stated he was with a law firm and that there was fraud against my social security number and then today 8-31 he called and he stated he was with the sherrif office and that he had an arrest warrent and to call asap.  This has got to STOP.  He called about 3-4 weeks again too and now his calls are starting back up again.

Received a call from a "David Nickman" last night telling me to call an officer "Brian Solace" as there was a warrant out for my arrest. The ID on my phone was a big Red Cross from 911 no less. I panic'd as I have a daughter out there and a sickly Dad so in seconds bad things ran through my head about them so I answered the phone. "Officer" Nickman told me that I needed to call Officer Brian Solace at 210-892-2679 ASAP or he would be at my door to arrest me. When I asked Mr. Nickman what department he was out of he told me Pittsfield.  I said Pittsfield where. He replied NH. # 1 there are no Sheriff's in Pittsfield, NH as I used to live there. # 2 I am very good friends with the Chief there. I asked Mr. Nickman what the Chief's name was and he got very upset with me telling me I was just being rude now. He told me they were watching me and I would be arrested. I have contacted my phone company asking how a 911 call could come across like that and I guess there are apps out there you can download to show anything on a caller ID now. This call truly disturbed me and had me awake all night. To those out there reading these please help us find these jerks and beware of any 911 calls to your phones.

I am not going to let this lie, I am going to report this to any law office that will listen to me.

You will be behind the bars for six months and once you go behind the bars, you will lose your job. Once you are behind the bars, you won't get a single drop of water."

That's the message received by just one of hundreds of thousands of cash-strapped Americans who authorities say have become the targets of a "phantom" debt collection scheme in which victims are bullied and threatened into paying conmen money they do not owe, as reported in an ABC News "Nightline" investigation.

"They call up and they pretend to be policemen... sometimes they've been from the FBI or the Department of Justice," said Jon Leibowitz, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. "So it is just a hardcore kind of scam and we're beginning to see more of it." Spotting a Potential Conman

Just because the caller says he's an authority figure, that doesn't mean he is. According to the FTC, there are several ways to tell if someone may be trying to pull one over on unsuspecting callers. Keep a lookout for the following red flags:

First, does their story make sense? Are they asking you about a debt you don't recognize in the first place?

Be suspicious of anyone claiming to be law enforcement. "The police, the FBI, the Justice Department probably never enforces payday loan collection," Leibowitz said. "They're not debt collectors." Also, Leibowitz said to be on the lookout for clues about the caller. "If someone is calling themselves Officer Mike Johnson and they're speaking with a thick Indian accent, I suppose that would be a red flag."

The caller won't give you ways to reach him such as a mailing address or phone number.

The caller asks you for personal financial information -- that a legitimate figure would likely not have to ask for -- or threatens you with legal action if you do not pay.

If You Think You're the Target of a Scam...

First things first, the FTC says to ask for the caller's name, company, address and phone number and for a "validation notice" detailing the debt owed. "If a caller refuses to give you all this information, do not pay!" the FTC says.

Do not provide any personal information over the phone. If you do, that information could be used by thieves for identity theft.

Tell them to stop calling and, if you have an address for them, ask them to stop calling in writing. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling if you request that in writing, the FTC says.

The most obvious course of action, Leibowitz said, is to call up your actual creditor. "If a consumer knows they have debt, call the debtor up. The debtor can can you, 'Yes, I called.' or 'No, that was somebody else,'" he said.

Report the call to the FTC and state authorities. "Many states have their own debt collection laws" in addition to federal ones, the FTC says. "Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law."

"The thing we wanted to do first and foremost was we wanted to shut this operation down," Leibowitz said.
