They called me, I answered and only heard some music. I have helped American Bible Association, and received a personal letter for donation for Chinese Bibles. I hope they are legit, but would prefer not to be called in this manner.

It is a debt collection agency using the sketchy ruse of adopting a caller ID name to trick you into picking up the phone, since they know you are under NO legal obligation to speak with them, whether the debt is legitimate or not. To learn more about your rights & how to deal with credit collectors, you can visit the United Consumer Advocacy Network at www.ucan.net

Multiple calls from this number, American Bible Society. Annoying
Martha 2014-01-22 02:15:11 Unknown
A friend of mine who does I.T. work said that one reason a call from a legitimate organization may not show the name is that sometimes specific caller I.D. info doesn't translate well between different phone systems (such as between ATT and Time-Warner). So my caller I.D. on this number just said "New York Call" and didn't tell me it was American Bible Society. I have recently had calls from other "New York Call" numbers that were a scam, so I just don't answer a call if I don't recognize the number or caller I.D.

They call everyday. I just don't answer. Too many scams nowadays. I'm also on the no call list. Those of you who donate, really you need to stop and think to whom you might be donating. Not all these calls are from honest people. They can say that they are an legitimate group, but most are not.
Jeannie 2014-01-10 15:39:00 Unknown
Yes, very annoying. I never answer when it says unknown name, and they never leave a message. If legitimate they should use better marketing tools. I would never donate to them after this kind of soliciting regardless of who they are. How would we know they are who they say they are? They call about every day and I have never left a message. Again if legit they should say something.
Martha 2014-01-09 21:18:52 Unknown
I wish that legitimate organizations would always identify themselves on caller ID so you know if it's a call you want to answer. The only reason I can think of that they don't is if they are using volunteers to make calls from their own phones. For instance, I get monthly calls from Purple Heart saying they will have a truck in my area on a particular date to pick up items I want to get rid of. Those calls always come from a person in my area code that I don't know. But lately it always seems to be the same name and number, so I recognize it. I have put stuff out in the past for them to pick up.

I got this phone call several times this week, but didn't answer because I didn't realize it was the American Bible Society. I have donated to them before. Probably if you get mailings from them or have donated to them before, they already have your address so they don't need to ask for it over the phone. I also feel it's wise to never donate over the phone but ask them to send me something in the mail, even if it is a legitimate familiar organization that I have donated to before.
Tina 2014-01-09 18:50:25 Unknown
Seems to me a religious organization would leave a message.

I called the number and they're affiliated with the American Bible Society. Um. Huh?
Karen Costello 2013-10-30 00:26:01 Non-profit Organization
I am constantly getting callsfrom this # it is the American Bible Society. I ask them not to call anymore. They took me off the list and put my # on the Do NOT CALL List. I called them today because they have called my home more 2 this week and at least everyday for the past couple of months. This time I retuned their call and it will take about 1 month to be removed is what the recording said!
Helen 2013-10-29 13:44:24 Unknown
I'm glad to find out it is NOT the bible society but the NRA. Sure wish there was a way to stop this annoyance.

Calls from this number show up on my caller ID several times a day from 0800 through the evening hours. No message is ever left. Call must not be important or is a scam. Wish the calls would stop and free up the space on my voice mail.
TT 2013-10-21 18:53:58 Unknown
They are a legitimate organization-I have several friends that work for them and they do what they say-they aren't just another telemarketing scam!

dial *67 , pause, wait for a new dial tone ....them call them back. your ph won't come up. goto the dnc list. enter a local FBI office(look up), the white house(202-456-1414), Homeland security emergency hotline(look up), and a bee-atch you know.
I use to enter some other telemarketer or bill collector's number so they all called one another. Let them call them several times a day. Do this each time and they will have to constantly get new numbers & not stay in business long. As they read this now they will comment on these sites that the ph number is just a bible sales, etc, etc ATTack THEM.

Several times a day starting at 8:30 Am and continuing through the calls from 212-203-4565 show up on my caller ID. No message is ever left so the call is obviously not important. Wish the caller would stop calling and hanging up if the call is not important enough to leave a message.
natl recv agen 2013-10-16 18:12:52 Debt Collector
This is the National Recovery Agency. A debt collector. You will never get off their do not call list...so don't bother...AND DON'T ANSWER. It's not anybody else selling anything..just a ruse to get you to answer. I like how the nra puts crap online here and elsewhere that it is a bible sales number. Like a bible sales would call you 20x a day for 20 weeks and hang up or not answer. AMEN.
MJG 2013-08-29 16:21:08 Unknown
Unfortunately by pressing 1 you have verified your number as active. You may now receive more calls (hopefully not).
smallbizrunner 2013-08-29 16:18:26 Unknown
Calls every day, sometimes multiple times. We answer, no one there. Finally today I called back. Though you get a voice message, they do prompt you to press 1 if you no longer wish to receive calls from them. They say it will take up to 30 days to add the number to their do not call list. We'll see...

Calls from NYC daily. Each time I answer, no one responds. It is harassment. How can I get them to stop?

Charity calls are typically placed by a commercial fundraiser, such as Associated Community Services, Dial America, Donor Care Center, Donor Services Group, Harris Direct, Horizon Marketing, InfoCision, Insight Teleservices, MDS, and TeleFund. As commercial entities, these hired call centers are expected to honor an internal no-call list and add any number upon request. Break that order, the FTC declares, and ''the telemarketer may be subject to a fine of up to $16,000.'' They are also covered to a point by other regulations for telepests, so you can kvetch about abandoned calls, bot calls to mobile phones, and so on.
In a comment from Nov 2012 linked below, find the simple steps I took to rid myself of a major pain boiler room by politely rubbing its face in federal laws. You will note that I never rely on verbal cease-communication demands.
