212-380-3114 is an american express collections number - made a call through them, and got worried, so I called the  1-888 number on my card, confirmed the call was recorded in my history and all was safe.

Phone calls were received from this, as well as a blocked number for several days while we were out of town.  After returning home, I answered and was asked to place my spouse on the line.  I explained that my spouse works irregular hours and I will not wake him unless I can tell him who is calling.  The caller stated that he was calling from American Express and need to speak only my spouse.  I stated that since either of us have an American Express Card, I would not wake him and not to call back.  The next night, the same person called again, although, the caller denied that he had called the night before.  We had the same conversation as the night before, and we hung up.

I then immediately called American Express customer service.  The representative verified our personal information, said we were placed on the "do not call list," and apologized for the calls.

The next day American Express called again, but during day time hours.  My spouse answered.  To make a long story short, my spouse was told that our son who lives in another state owed money to American Express.  Our son has not lived with us for over 20 years and in another state.  Neither of us are signers on any accounts currently or in the past.  As approximately 10 other persons with my husband's name live in our area, how many of them were told our son's business by AMEX?  Federal law prohibits financial institutions from giving out account information to non-account holders. But Amex must feel that they are above the law.

I received a phone call from them. I didn't return the call. I can believe its American express because I owe them money. Amex calls from many many different numbers to get their money because they know an average person gets caught off guard.  Just don't answer phone calls if u don't know who they are. It's the best way. They don't leave a message then screw-em!  Relax, the phone calls u are getting are from people trying to get something outta you , they don't have, whether its info, or money.  Just ignore them and enjoy life.

When I called back; the rep does not know why they called; they want my SS # or my account #; they don't leave a message; They called me; why do I have to provide that info.  When I said that I want my phone # put on their do not call list; the rep said she cannot do it w/o an account #.  Very frustration round-and-round conversation.  They called me and they don't know why....

Are you sure?

Only you claim they said it was one of their numbers! Many others have NOT!!!

One example:

http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/2123803114

"It's a scam. I called American Express's customer service line to ask if they were calling me for any reason (I don't trust a regular area code). This number is not in their records as being from any of their departments."

? This number is not in their records as being from any of their departments

Also the message you got:
? They say "this is not a sales or marketing call" and that they is is an important call about "your account". ?

http://twopenniesearned.blogspot.com/2011/08/mysterious-phone-calls-from-american.html?m=1

"One message sounded something like this:

"My name is ____. I'm calling on behalf of American Express. May I please speak to Amy Fontinelle? (4-second pause) Amy Fontinelle please. On behalf of American Express I want to thank you for speaking to me. If you have any additional questions please contact us at the number on the back of the card. You have a nice evening."

There was no pause in the message after they said "Amy Fontinelle please." Also, I never spoke to them, so why did they thank me for speaking to them? It should be noted that all of the voice messages were from women who sounded unmistakably American--I don't think there was a language barrier problem.

Another message sounded something like this:

Hello this is ____ calling on behalf of American Express on a recorded line may I speak with Amy Fontinelle. (2-second pause) On behalf of American Express I want to thank you for speaking with me today. If you have any additional questions you may contact us at the number on the back of the card and have a good day."

http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/i ... express_please/

"I do not have an American Express account. Finally, I received a call from an 800 number (also listed above), and they left a message saying ?This is American Express ? calling to discuss an important matter.? I returned the call at this number, and an automated message immediately asked for an account number. I eventually got to speak to a ?representative? who sounded unofficial, suspicious, speaking out of the protocol I?m used to hearing when I call credit card company reps/customer service. I told the ?AmEx representative? about the number of calls I keep receiving from them, and that they are calling me in error, because I do not have an account with them."

http://www.blindmansfaith.com/updates/2009/04 ... 1-800-592-1176/

"Last night we received a call from a person named Margaret (left a voicemail) saying it was about an important business matter and not a sales or marketing call. Wanted us to call back at 1-800-592-1176.

The message itself was very suspicious because if it was an important message, the person would have left a note about what was so important about it.

We did some searching on the web and found that this is a group of scammers who claim to be from American Express. When you call back, they?ll request your social security number as well as your American Express card number before they?ll tell you what the ?important matter? was."

This numbers (and the others) can be traced to IP Addresses:

http://www.verifyphone.com/phone-lookup-reviews/212-380-3114

"Reverse IP Search Tracer for 2123803114

This reverse phone number was traced from the following IP addresses: 161.149.102.186, 65.51.40.130, 174.252.129.14, 76.18.33.102, 66.249.76.53"

Which indicates it's either from a cell phone and/or a VoIP service is being used ... possible Caller ID spoofing as well!!! Cell phone and Voice over Internet Protocal service is being used. VoIP services and cell phones are scammers choice of tools (they can spoof caller ID). Ask yourself this, were it really AmEx would they be spoofing any of their numbers? No! Would they call on Cell phones? No! Would they even use VoIP services? No!

From a few of the other numbers making these same bs calls:

http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-801-945-9061

"They call constantly without leaving a message.  When I finally called them back, they claim to be American Express, but they want YOU to tell THEM what your credit card number is.  They aren't able to answer any questions about your account, which sounds very suspicious. They didn't even know my address.  They only seemed to have a telephone number, yet they want you to give them more of your personal information over the phone.   Sounds like a lame phishing scam."

http://whocalled.us/lookup/6234926031

""We have been getting calls from 6025379012 and the caller ID lists the caller as 6234926331. I saw on this site that this was supposedly an AMEX call. I called the number on my AMEX card and spent about 20 minutes with a representative. She assured me that my account is OK and up-to-date and that these #s ARE NOT affiliated with AMEX. I strongly suspect a phishing or spoofing scam. DO NOT talk to these people and DO NOT call them."

"Called the FCC to complain that I am getting calls from 623-492-6031, 216-545-8326 and others posing as banks and scamming people into giving out personal information. I told the FCC rep that the scary thing is that they somehow have hacked into the telephone system and can have authentic bank phone numbers shown on your caller ID screen. The FCC representative said that this was called "spoofing" and was considered fraud, so was under the jurisdiction of the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) rather than the FCC that concerns itself with only unwanted telemarketing calls. They also said, unfortunately, that this kind of fraud was almost impossible to investigate, let alone prosecute - so the best thing to do is let it go to the answering machine if you don't recognize the number"

"Got a call from this number, yet ANOTHER in a long string of FAKE AMERICAN EXPRESS PHISHING SCAMS. This has been going on for months, my landline, my cell. These assclowns call from cell phones in Florida, New York, Arizona, just to name a few. They fake their caller ID to read Unknown, or American Express or they are identified by "cell phone"
Real American Express does not call their customers asking for personal information, and they certainly do not call you from cell phones. The premise of the phishing scam is to get you to enter your legitimate card number and expiration, then once you have done that, they will ask all kinds of personal info, like if you want to make a payment by phone, they will request your banking info.
Before you know it, your card has been used fraudulently and your bank account is cleaned out.
NEVER NEVER GIVE THESE FOLKS YOUR PERSONAL INFO. ALWAYS VERIFY WHO YOU ARE ACTUALLY TALKING TO."

"AMEX has told me this is a scam. A recorded message said they were American Express calling about my account and to call them back at an 800 number before the close of the business day. I called the AMEX phone number on my card and they said no one from AMEX has tried to contact me."

http://idtheft.about.com/b/2009/01/19/american-express-vishing-scam.htm

"I received my first vishing voice mail today. The call came in early, and the voice mail said American Express needed to verify charges that were being made to my account. They asked that I call a specific number, not the number on the back of my card and enter my full 16 digit account number to be taken directly to the security department.

I knew immediately that it was a vishing call because I am not an American Express customer. But even if I were, I would never call a number left on my voicemail and enter my full account number. I assume that American Express would have that number and would need nothing more than the last four digits to verify my identity.

Identity theft and credit fraud criminals are getting more and more sophisticated. Beware of any incoming call that requests information that the company should already have on file. And when in doubt, always hang up and call the number on the back of the card, not a number provided in voicemail."

Plus more that indicates this number is NOT AmEx (and the other numbers are NOT either):
Those making these illegal, harassing scam calls:
? Ask for full account number plus social security number as well
? Call people how don't have an AmEx card or AmEx account
? Voice on other end is pretty much one with an Indian Accent
? And since the other numbers they call with is IP traceable that also could mean the numbers are spoofed

Further, the AmEx rep stated that they WON'T call you ... but rather it would be you (if an AmEx account holder) calling them! They'd NEVER call along the lines of these particular calls especially. AmEX would know who has an account with them and would not cold call anybody and everybody like this!!!

And also, to note ... They sometimes follow using a 000-000-0000 identifier, which means they're calling from an international site.

This number is NOT for AmEx at all!!! I know, I ACTUAL spoke with one of their reps and ran down all these numbers and the rep specifically told me that not one of them is for AmEx or any business or agency connected or affiliated with them!!! PERIOD!!!

American Express has been phone-stalking me for a couple of weeks from various numbers, and I thought it was a scammer because I do not have an American Express account, and because their messages never ask for anybody by name. They say "this is not a sales or marketing call" and that they is is an important call about "your account".
Today this number was left on my Caller ID from them, and I was all set to report it to FCC, but first I called AmEx's customer service number from their website. The customer service rep dialed the number and confirmed that it does belong to them. She then checked to make sure that someone else didn't fraudulently open a card under my name, and concluded that they must have my phone number tied to another person's account. They deleted my number from the record, and gave me this number to call if it happens again:

Just one word for these scumbags (directed at them) .... a**les!!!!

They really must be brain dead! They aren't ever going to get through. PERIOD!!! They will always get the same message greeting them each time whatever number they use!!!

Always calling people who don't have any business with American Express and trying to scam them out out of their money!

The FTC has been notified, next my lawyer!!! In short, I'm not buying their bs nor am I ever going to fall for it!
These a**les are total moron's!!!!

One other thing, I have called American Expresses customer service number (listed on their website) and spoke with one of their representatives (had to keep saying "representative" to get someone)... they confirmed that NONE of these numbers below are American Express numbers and do not go to any other department or service connected with or to American Express:

CID: AMERICAN EXPRES     (212) 380-3114
CID: AMERICAN EXPRES     (623) 492-8037
CID: AMERICAN EXPRES     (801) 945-9061

CID: AMERICAN EXPRES     (602) 537-9011
CID: TOLL FREE CALL         (800) 266-7073

And also the AmEx rep stated that they WON'T call you ... but rather it would be you (if an AmEx account holder) calling them! They'd NEVER call regarding such as discussed in this thread. They do what's known as inbound calling in other words ... not outbound as in the case with each of these reported numbers claiming to be AmEx!!!

It's a vishing scam, folks!!! DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY INFORMATION TO THESE A**LES AT ALL!!! REPORT EACH CALL, INCLUDING, TIME OF DAY, DATE, CALLER ID INFO!!! They are phishing for your personal information to either bleed your account dry (if you have an AmEx account) or worse, steal your identity!!! It's a SCAM!!!

http://idtheft.about.com/b/2009/01/19/american-express-vishing-scam.htm

"I received my first vishing voice mail today. The call came in early, and the voice mail said American Express needed to verify charges that were being made to my account. http://www.americanexpress.com/us/content/fra ... ncename=default

"Phone Phishing (also called "Vishing") is another way fraudsters try to collect sensitive information from you. In this type of fraud, the fraudster will either contact you by telephone or send you a fake e-mail and ask for you to respond by telephone.

If you are ever in doubt about American Express contacting you by phone, simply call the number on the back of your Card or on your account statement. Be sure to enter your account number when prompted and you will be routed to the correct department for assistance.

What Should You Do If You Supplied Sensitive Information over the Phone to a Suspicious Party?
If you have already responded to a suspicious caller with your American Express account information and you believe it to be fraudulent, please contact American Express immediately by calling the number on the back of your Card"

http://www.blindmansfaith.com/updates/2009/04 ...

When you call back, they?ll request your social security number as well as your American Express card number before they?ll tell you what the ?important matter? was.

Anyway, thought we?d post this on our blog in case any of you get the same message. The more information that shows up on Google search engine, the more informed others will be when they search for this number.

The most annoying thing is, we get these calls in the middle of the night (Shanghai time) because we have a California telephone number. We use a Packet8 IP phone, which is basically a U.S. landline in China! We get a bunch of random sales and marketing calls in U.S. time!"

And another thing ... Caller ID has "AMERICAN EXPRES" (one "s", not two!). If it were actually American Express or their collection arm it would be spelled "AMERICAN EXPRESS" with TWO "S"'s or TOLL FREE CALL (for any 800 number)!!! - But of note, American Expresses numbers are all 800 numbers (check their website)!!!

With the exception of the '*800" numbers, all the other numbers that have 'called' can all be traced to IP Addresses which indicate either a cell phone and/or VoIP service was used to make these calls!

As to this particular reported number... traceable to IP addresses:

http://www.verifyphone.com/phone-lookup-reviews/212-380-3114

"Reverse IP Search Tracer for 2123803114

This reverse phone number was traced from the following IP addresses: 161.149.102.186, 65.51.40.130, 174.252.129.14, 76.18.33.102, 66.249.76.53"

Which indicates it's either from a cell phone and/or a VoIP service is being used ... possible Caller ID spoofing as well!!!

And also, to note ... They sometimes follow using a 000-000-0000 identifier, which means they're calling from an international site.

How can you be sure?

These numbers have many complaints across the internet from people who don't even have an account or card wirh American Express! Big red flag right there!!!

This is from my next to last post:

Whether or not these a**les are AmEx or their collection department they don't seem to get it! They aren't going to get through as I already blacklisted this and and the other numbers that claim to be AmEx!

It's a good thing the service I use to try and stop these harassing type calls has a call log, that's how I found out these moron's tried again! But they won't get through!

They have absolutely no reason or justification for calling me as I don't have an AmEx Card or an account with them!!!

http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/2123803114

"It's a scam. I called American Express's customer service line to ask if they were calling me for any reason (I don't trust a regular area code). This number is not in their records as being from any of their departments."

http://www.everycall.us/phone-number/1-212-380-3114/

"I receive the same calls from AMEX and don't have a card. While it may be legitimate collector (fishing for someone who might know someone who is delinquent or from an old phone number), I would be very careful about putting a credit card number in to a prompt without knowing for sure they are who they say they are.

...
Do NOT give your credit card to someone who calls you."

"They claim to be American Express when you call the number back, and then instantly ask for your 15 digit card number. 1)I don't have an American Express card 2) Go to any authentic credit card web site and the first thing they will tell you is that they WILL never ask for your full card number personal information"

Calling people who don't even have an AmEx Card or account? Still sounds fishy (or rather phishy/vishy) to me!!!

And also claiming to be AmEx Collections from another number:

http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-336-393-1085/3

"I received a call from them at 7:10 pm.  After reading the posts on this forum, I called them back to see if someone would answer (I do not have an AMEX card).  The call eventually rolled over to an operator and I explained to him that I did not have an AMEX card and did not want an AMEX card and asked him to take me off of their calling list.  He had me confirm the number that I was calling from and then said he removed me from the list.  He was very nice about it and did not try to solicit any more information from me or try to sell me anything."

"They call us constantly.  We don't have an American Express card, never have.  They call a ton from all kinds of different numbers.  Sometimes the Caller ID says American Express sometimes it doesn't.  This is a phishing scam.  Try giving them a fake card number and they will tell your bill is late and they need your SS#, etc.  DO NOT GIVE ANY INFORMATION TO THEM."

Please see the long post  (following the above) on the thread for this other number!

"It's a scam caller claiming to be AmEx, "vishing" for account information.  You can read about my experience here, if you'd like: http://tinyurl.com/6cxlgcu

If you have an AmEx account, I recommend calling their official customer service number (probably listed on the back of your card or on their official website) before calling this number."

? Those that do have American Express has called the number on the back of their card and and AmEx stated that these numbers aren't theirs
? The ones calling are calling people who din't have AmEx
? At least some of the numbers can be traced to IP Addresses and others to mobile phones!

It's American Express.

We've been getting harassing phone calls consisting of nothing but annoying tones from this number, as well as other "unknown caller" numbers. The calls started right after we hit a rough patch and got behind in payments to American Express. We suspected it was AmEx, but didn't know for sure, UNTIL they slipped up and used THREE of those same phone numbers to instead deliver an automated message ASKING US TO CALL AMERICAN EXPRESS. (It's a good thing we logged those numbers!)

In our case, almost all the calls are pure harassment, consisting of loud "beeeep beeeep beeeep" tones that go on and on. When the answering machine answers the phone, the tones continue until the machine times-out and disconnects. When we answer the phone, we are also greeted by the same loud tones. These are not telephone company type tones; at least, not like any I've ever heard before.

Generally, we get about 2 to 4 (or more) of these "tone" calls per day, coming in from any of the following numbers:

212-300-5091 ...tones
212-365-4761 ...tones, or an automated msg from AmEx
212-380-3114 ...tones
602-537-9011 ...tones
623-492-7299 ...tones
623-492-8037 ...tones
623-492-8976 ...tones
800-266-5832 ...tones
800-266-7073 ...tones, or an automated msg from AmEx
801-945-9060 ...tones
801-945-9061 ...tones, or an automated msg from AmEx
801-945-9065 ...tones
866-260-2386 ...tones
866-544-8416 ...tones
866-884-0976 ...tones
954-503-1806 ...tones
954-503-2843 ...tones

A few calls from these numbers were "silent"...no tones, no nothing.

A few calls of the loud tones have come in from blocked IDs (unknown numbers).

Anyway, embarrassing as circumstances are, I figure someone else might find this info helpful.

Just so you know, you CAN have your number removed from accounts....but they will get you back.  I did this with Wells Fargo credit card because I was receiveing a handful of telemarketing calls per day on my cell phone from them.  I asked they remove the number from my accout and stop harassing me trying to sell me things.

The politely said they would remvoe the number and two days later, they completely cancel my credit card account even though I had it for 11 years, not late payments, a high limit and low balance.  It hurt my credit to have a balance due on a closed account and changed my overall debt to credit ratio.

I called them, and they said the only reason for closing the account was because I wanted them to stop calling me.  They have a right to cancel under the card tems whenever they want and for whatever reason they want.  They told me "We have a right to call you whenever we want" LOL

So you CAN get your number removed, but they can be petty and try one of these "revenges."

Not a scam.  It is their collections department.  Kind of a separate entity from the credit company.  They do research into who owns the account and who they possibly associate with, which is why you may get a call about friends/ex's/ etc.

Keep getting calls from this number as well as multiple others from different area codes.  Turns out it is in fact from AMEX.  The reason customer service doesn't know it is theirs is because it is their Collections department.  My Ex is apparently late on her payments and they keep calling me regardless.  Annoying, but I somewhat understand.
