"John Williams" from "Microsoft" called  to tell me of a hacking that's taken place on my computer. He asked for me by name and  I have an unpublished number so that was disconcerting. When I asked how he got my number, he tells me I am registered user? I tell him I'll have to call back. He says, sure and gives me 1 866- 539-8674 and says "Mike Williams." I said, you told me you were John Williams. Oh, Mike Williams is the supervisor. It's so ridiculous. I ask what's this all about? He says they detected that 'blacklisted files" have been downloaded to my computer and only I can see them. He gave specific dates - on July something or other there was no evidence of these files but now on August something there are. He asked if I was on the computer now and I said no. Well, I'll have to get on the computer if they can help me. I said I'd call back.

What's weird is the other day I was talking to Verizon and a strange guy there told me I should call Microsoft for my problem. I thought that was ridiculous. I'm definitely following up with Verizon about him and some of his actions and words.

Please read posting on the internet:
I'm an employee of arjun group of industries in a similar outbound call center.
I'm now disclosing all our company's secret out here because I'm feeling guilty to be part of a very big scam and don't want my country's name to tarnish. The MD of arjun group of industries is Mr. Ankit Jaiswal.
We are totally a scam and we have three processes namely The UK process where we are required to scam the nice people of the UK. The second is the US process where the same thing is done to the US people and last but not the least they recently introduced an austrailian process.
well the scamming first starts with a phone call from a british accented indian. he says " Hello I'm david (my alias name) am i speaking with ... (Your last name) then starts to tell that ur computer might have downloaded a very dangerous online infection that is very dangerous for ur computer and they came to know all about it after they saw ur IP address was blinking in their server system.
after a lot of talks they ask for money.

Facts:
1. Those errors and warnings are nothing but page faults in the operating system. Windows just logs it down.
2. There is nothing as the open gateway of the internet from where these so called infections can come.
3. There is nothing as the International Server System. These gys buy your telephone number from various companies.
4. Your IP (Internet Protocol) address cannot blink coz its not something which can report anything. Its just the identification of ur computer in the network.

DOs'
1. Hang Up the phone as soon as u hear any of rthose above said dialogues.
2. Never ever download anything or do anything they tell u to do so.
3. DO NOT CONNECT UR COMPUTER REMOTELY. DO NOT GO TO
(i) www.logmein123.com
(ii) www.ammyy.com
4. Do not ever give ur credit card details or fill any of the claimed Secured Banking Form from them. because if u come to this point then they would be able to see anything ur doing with the computers as ur computer is already connected.

please please do read it once and ask if u have any queries...

It really feels bad because of some lowlifes INDIA's name is tarnished in front of all.
I'm an INDIAN and I'm proud to be one..

Heavily accented woman called with (212) 438-7895 showing up in caller I.D.  Said she was calling to fix a problem with my computer.  Asked who she was calling for and she stated my name correctly after a couple of tries.  When I asked her where she was calling from, she said right now the call was being routed through the ______ Islands, so I needed to go to my computer right away.  Sounded like she said "Balkan" one time and "Cayman" another time when I asked her to repeat.  Told her she had the wrong number and hung up.  The call was so obviously fake and the person was barely intelligible.  Wondering how many people could be gullible enough to fall for this obvious scam.  Would really like to know who they're buying lists of names and unlisted numbers from.  She called my unlisted Verizon cell phone.

Please be advised that this scam company changes their name constantly. Yesterday it was Best Company. They may call back a number which the caller id displays 866 539-8674. Usually the person calling back is aggressive and trying very hard to have you allow them access to your computer. Once again, do not fall for their scam. They are not affiliated at all with The McGraw-Hill Companies.

I got one tonight.  I asked them where they got my number as I always do with calls like these...she kept ranting.  Folks, try this some time.  Lay the phone down and let them go.  I think we should make a contest out of this and see who can get them to stay on the phone the longest.  How about giving them information that belongs to an infected computer and turn it around on them.

I got the call today. woman, heavy accent, asking about computer, etc.  I figured it was a scam, so, when she asked for me by name, I followed a suggestion of a friend.  My reply?  "Homicide devision, please state your full name, where you are calling from, and why are you calling the deceased phone number. and fyi, this call is being recorded for possible prosecution."  Her answer? Homicide? you mean you have a body there?  She couldn't get off the phone fast enough.

I received a call from 212-438-7895. I answered the ring because of  McGraw  Hill showing up on the i.d.
After I said hello a couple of times, the caller hung up -- no conversation. Out of curiosity I looked up McGraw Hill but didn't find phone numbers. Then I checked here for reverse number search. I'll know not to answer I get another call from this number.

Same story as all the above.  They have been at this for a while.  What I usually do is let him talk and talk and I act old and confused and keep asking question like i am listening and waste as much time of there time as possible and then eventually tell him "...but I have Apples".  That ends it for a couple of weeks.
What I do not get is who is falling for this just enough for this crew to keep trying.

I had a call tonight from this number tonight telling me that I had illegal files on my computer,  that I had to get rid of them and they could help.  They called me sometime ago and I was suspicious then and still am, so no go.  When I saw McGraw Hill on caller ID I thought it was someone selling something.  Unless someone can prove what they're doing is illegal, guess they'll continue to see  how many folks they can dupe!  I'm surprised the McGraw Hill Company hasn't been able to do something about these people using their name.

I just spoke with Andy from the FCC, who advised that I should report this to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and my state attorney general. The FTC number is (877) 382-4357. The number for the New York State attorney general is (800) 771-7755. (Of course, all state attorneys general are listed in the phone book [what's that????] or on the Internet. I just happen to be from New York.)

Got several calls showing McGraw-Hill in caller ID, with the number 212-438-7895. Thanks to McGraw-Hill corporate security for recording an outgoing message explaining the scam. When I got the first of these calls, I wasn't available to answer the phone. I called the number back because of the caller ID (I'm a writer, and listed in several freelance directories, so it would not be unusual for me to get a call from a publishing company). If the outgoing message from corporate security had not been on that number, I would not have been prepared for the call I got this morning. I immediately turned off my Internet connection and allowed the call to continue, just to see what would happen. These people are slick. They identified themselves (I talked to the initial caller and "the supervisor") as being from a company called "Best Help." They have answers for everything, and I can understand why people have fallen into the trap of unwittingly providing information. The Supervisor had me click the Windows flag key and the letter r simultaneously, which brings up a "run" dialogue box, and instructed me to type in "eventvwr" (event viewer). I was then to click on "Administration" and "System" in turn, and let him know whether I saw any yellow "Warning" or red "Error" messages. This would be proof that I needed his help. (Of course, I saw a bunch of them.) The next step was to go back to the "run" dialogue box and type in "iexplore www.support.me"--the execution of that command requires an Internet connection. I told The Supervisor that I would not turn on my Internet connection, thanked him for "trying to help," told him I was calling the FCC to just let them know that Best Help had called, and ended the call.

Got a call from this number too. I used to do work for McGraw Hill; it's the only reason I answered the call. The woman was very insistent that people were having their computers hacked in my neighborhood so she needed to tell me what to do. I told her I was on the other line and hung up. What a joke! Glad I found this site.
