I received a call early in the morning from a female with Indian accent who claimed that she is from MS and alleged that my computer is attached to their MS station in Malaysia, suggested me to turn on my computer.  I did not do it but ask for their call number in order to phone her later, she gave me 18009479400 and immediately cut off the line.

Next time, for a great laugh, tell him all your computers run Puppy Linux. (It's a great OS, but worth hearing what your foreign 3rd world criminal has to say).

Jack from Microsoft reporting problems with my computer @ 1014 AM Eastern Time. (It's early, I'll play along - but not even making an attempt to log in) Asked him "Which computer is having issues I have more than one. The IP? The computername? My username? What OS? Anything identifying?", he replied "I'm not sure about that. Log on and I'll show you".  So I asked "Which one?" his reply "The one you use the most, the main one." "My main one? You're not sure about which computer is having any issues? But you know my computer is reporting problems. Hmm doesn't sound very specific to me. Thank you. Bye"

Prank Call
I find some of the remarks posted about these ?faux telemarketer calls? amusing.  I put together a software program that has logged over 380 of these annoyance calls since 2012.  Those of you that let the calls roll to your answering machine, voicemail or worse yet answered the call you have just ensured you will get another of these calls.  Maybe not from the same number, but they?ve just identified your number as valid and passed it on.  Most of the initial calls originate from software (aka; ?robocalls?) ? once your number is identified as active, then a person may be there on the follow up calls.  If you have the capability to ?block? the number that called ? that is the best action.  If you don?t have a blocking option, keep a phone with caller ID close by and simply hit ?talk? and ?off? simultaneously.  If you really want to block them ? there is reasonably priced software that a layman can install.  Of the 380 calls I?ve blocked, only 16 have been in the last 6 months.  So the message is simple ? blocking works?.

Doesn't do much good in the case of these type scams.  The callers are located in India and ignore all US laws.   There's no way to stop the calls from being initiated, but you can protect yourself by using a calll blocker.  Also, don't pick up on call numbers you don't recognize.

Call came in with a 212 prefix and since I have New York clients, I answered it. He said he was from Microsoft, that my computer was sending a lot of error messages and that he was calling to help me fix them and prevent viruses. I went along with him, knowing he was on a phishing expedition. He said he had my information through Internet Protocol (IP address) and that he was "in" my computer. I asked him what kind of computer I had and he said I was running Windows 7. Of course I have a Mac but I let him continue to see where he'd take me. He said for me to turn on my computer then look at the ctrl key and tell him what was next to it. I said if you know my computer so you know what's next to it. He said, "yes, I know everything." To which I said I also knew everything. That's when he told me to go to hell. I laughed, said "you too" and hung up. Potentially very harmful for the more gullible ones who will believe the fear factor and let this guy in to install malware or give him personal info. Indian accent. Spread the word.

Add me to the list...and this one seems to be one with more than the usual number of complaints here at "800notes".  My caller ID showed "New York".  I didn't answer and they left no message.

I'm reporting to DNC.  Just wondering, how many of you have done so?

Yep, just got the same call for about tenth time but did not answer this time when I didn't recognize the number.  Last time i told them "really?? But i don't have Microsoft on my computer." That shut them up pretty quickly. CRTC apparently can't do anything about these calls. Best thing is to just hang up. I'd be curious though to try to let them talk some more to see what they actually want us to do. Give them my passwords? Yeah sure, "Ken" / "Robert" / "Steven"...

I went along with him as well, but when I called him on it he hung up.  They must be conning some people out there, or they wouldn't still be doing this.  I wonder what the scam is.

212-777-8457; I've received calls on my cell and calls on my mother's landline.  Indian accent.  Call to the landline asked for my father who has been dead for 4 years.  Apparently, they work for "Microsoft" and the computer is sending error messages.  My Dad never owned a computer and I didn't just fall off the turnip truck.  Just hang up.  Scammers.  Warn your elderly relatives however, some poor guy in Alberta was taken for over $100 000.  He was 84 years old, for crying out loud.

You are getting confused. It does not matter the number the call is originating from.
The FCC states:

"You may file a complaint if you received an unwanted call after your number was on the National Registry for 31 days."

It is YOUR number that must be registered. The 31 day period is to given so as telemarketers have time to receive notice and then remove you from their call system.

We just read about an elderly gentleman in western Canada who was "taken" by a" Microsoft" fraud scam for some time, and who was defrauded of some $175,000 of his life savings, a gentleman who did not want the family to know about this, and so they were unaware of what was going on. They are now involved, we understand.   The accents were east Indian, the selling point again was a "virus" - the company supposedly "Microsoft"  and whether he will ever see his money again is a moot point.

If we know any elderly person living alone perhaps, with a computer, it might be worth telling them about this scam.  You don't have to be elderly to be taken in, but the elderly are often abused and stolen from very easily.  A word to the unaware is often a good thing.  By the way, does the company Microsoft itself have any input into this business by way of warnings / announcements , online and / or in the papers?  This sort of obscenity shouldn't be happening to anyone.  If we can alert the vulnerable people that we know, let's do so.

Scam classique.
