cristal- the 1st thing you ought to do, is call your bank bc they will tap in to it. check daily to see if there's any suspicious charges to your acct. since we have a flag on all our accts, they haven't called us back. they know we're on to them now. if they call again, let them know it's a scam & you have already heard all about them. i've made a police report, too. contact the company of which you so-called owe money to & they are pissed as well. they credited our acct back the charges and some bc they're trying to get to the bottom of this, too. being on a dnc list doesn't help the matter, obviously. report to the bbb & attorney general, as well.

This was a call with a veiled threat of legal action if I annoyed the call and didn't either return the call or have my attorney of record do so.  I have found on several message boards that this is a scam, so will not be returning the call and will be blocking the number from my phone.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

Some fraudsters have instructed victims to fax a statement agreeing to pay a certain amount, on a specific date, via a pre-paid Visa card. The statement further declares the victim will never dispute the debt.

If you receive these calls, do not follow the caller?s instructions. Rather, you should:

?Notify your banking institutions.
?Contact the three major credit bureaus and request an alert be put on your file.
?Contact your local law enforcement agencies if you feel you are in immediate danger.
?File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
Tips to avoid becoming a victim of this scam:

?Never give your Social Security number?or personal information of any kind?over the telephone or online unless you initiate the contact.
?Be suspicious of any e-mail with urgent requests for personal financial information. The e-mail may include upsetting or exciting but false statements to get you to react immediately.
?Avoid filling out forms in e-mail messages that request personal information.
?Ensure that your browser is up-to-date and security patches have been applied.
?Check your bank, credit, and debit card statements regularly to make sure that there are no unauthorized transactions. If anything looks suspicious, contact your bank and all card issuers.
?When you contact companies, use numbers provided on the back of cards or statements

I got the same call early this morning.  A man with thick (I think Indian) accent was almost incoherent in his voicemail message to me.  The message sounded threatening, although I couldn't really make it out in its entirety.

Very annoying.  I, too, am considering reporting this to the BBB.  My preliminary research ended up in LA so far.

If any of you receive a call from 213-289-3745, either report it to the authorities or just ignore them.

TOM (& all those being harassed),
this is a scam. no need to worry about court or jail. my husband was going to jail yesterday, well, that's what they said, & he's out enjoying himself at this moment. come to find out, my husband was doing research for a co-worker of ours who needed a cash advance. he looked in to it for her & told her it's a bunch of crock. if she were to borrow $600, in the long run she'd have to pay back $1,000 within a year. she obviously didn't do it. but bc my husband did the research for her, they somehow got his info (keep in mind, he didn't give any personal info AT ALL), they somehow tap into your IP address & get personal info on you. they may be using a product like the Magic Jack, too. although the number is a LA, CA. area code, i doubt they're in the states. they are truly riding their camel's to work in their dry land of india. change all your accounts & inform your bank bc they will tap in! it happened to us. i'm pissed & hope i can be a help to anyone going through this mess. i check here a couple times daily for additional help, myself.

the phone calls are redundant & they will become even more annoying once you make conversation w/them. do not verify anything with them even if it's correct or remotely correct. these camel-toe a***oles have a job, & this is it!!! luckily, in our situation, the company who debited the three small amounts from oour acct, put back the money & $100+ . they just so happened to call the bank while my husband was sitting there. we still cancelled everything out, but this is all so crazy & i thought it would never happen to us. the feeling of being violated has brought knots to my sto mache. apparently, the Cash Loan place is a legit company & they're trying to resolve all these issues, too. i'm still not buying that they are legit. only talk to Your bank, Your cc companies, etc. people are too smart & too many ppl are innocent victims. look over your cc & bank statements from the last couple months & continue to do so, if you don't already do that. just check to make sure there isn't crazy activity. and if so, call the 800# provided w/the charge & they'll tell you what company it is incase you need to dispute anything.

Now they have taken money out of my account under some cash now place. It was only 7,3,4 cents but now I'll have to close my account just in case. These people need to be shut down. If you get a call from this number do not call it back! Just let it go to voicemail and just report the number. This can't be legal.
