I have gotten 7 calls today from a Pakistani man.He has a very heavy accent. Starts out telling me his name is Robert Matthews. His Dept of Treasury ID # id 1559 have been found to be money laundering and am guilty of tax evaision. He tells me I am going to be arrested and will be put in prison for 6 mo. He is very very rude and called me a BI%%h on 3 occasions. I told him I would verify this call by calling The Dept of Treasury. He then went on to tell me my daughter was in danger and my husband would die. He called back 4 more times. How can I stop this?

This exact scam with similar threats is being used in New Jersey today (don't know # I was called from), The caller, also with a strongly accented voice, called yesterday, left a voicemail, and called again this morning with the same message. I tried to engage him in conversation but he avoided any request for further information or comment, including a request to know how he knew he had the right person, since there are probably 500 people in NJ with my name (he had absolutely no sense of humor and I could'nt get him to step out of his overwrought and panicked persona and into a conversational mode). He  said he was "Jason Richards", worked as a paralegal for  the Department of Legal Affairs, US Treasury, and that I had to call an enforcement officer "Adam Jones" at 213-375-0946. He even called back and hour later to ask why I hadn't called Adam Jones! When pressed he said I could only call him back at the same number (?) but he couldn't connect me to Adam Jones himself. Ultimately he threatened to send 'an agent' to my house to arrest me if I didn't call that number! If he calls you, ask him why you haven't been served notice in writing, certified mail, and listen to him hem and haw, then threaten you with arrest!

Got two of them as well. Scumbags. Friends, if the IRS comes after you, it will be in the form of registered mail, not sinister messages on your voicemail.

Same message, different number (267-287-3231), different name ("Edna Lee").  Everything else the same -- Department of Legal Affairs, U.S. Treasury.  Strong foreign accent (Indian?), odd turns of phrase ("once again I have landed up in your voice answering system").

The funny thing of this is that these people call me and expect me to buy this hook, line and sinker. lol.
I get this call 567-244-5257 from this number they say they are something about Department of legal affairs for U.S. Treasury and something about some dept blah, blah, blah.
One of the funny things is, he says I need to call back Mr. Steve Sebastion to fix this mess. Yeah I am sure Government agents talk like that.
The whole time he sounds almost like Apu from Simpsons and found it really hard to take him seriously.
The number he called me from was the same number they wanted me to call back to. So I look it up on the net and see all the Scam alerts. Well I can't resist calling. I call back with my phone set to record.
As soon as they answer I tell them that I was recording the call and any information I get will be forwarded to the FBI. Well they did not want to talk to me apparently and hung up.
They call later and get my voice mail and leave me a message that I have failed to call and this was my last notice.
I hope they call again tomorrow just so I can screw with them.

I just received the same exact call but number was 530-733-0023. When I looked it up it stated Gazelle, Ca, which is right on the border of CA and Oregon population 70.  I have had quite a few scams but not like this one.  I have a feeling they are going to say money due on taxes since it said US Treasury and the attorney and all.  I definitely going to contact Dept. of Legal Affairs, I think it's really bad to impersonate someone else, above all the government.

I too received received 2 messages from "Chris Evans" from the Department of Legal affairs.  Heavy middle eastern accent.  Similar threats as stated above. His call back number was (213) 289-3832.  In December I got a call from someone with a similar accent claiming they were from the IRS and with similar threaths. I didnt bother to call back. When are authorities going to call this number and track where its coming from?  Seems like its been going on for a while.

We received the same two calls from Dave Baxter/Department of Legal Affairs/US Treasury.  My husband called the IRS, knowing that we do not owe any money.  He was given instructions to fill out and file a 3949a form.

Thank you to everyone who posted their experiences.  I, too, received a call (voice mail) today from David Baker regarding my case with Steven Sebastian. They were from the Department of Legal Affairs for the US Treasury Dept.  213-289-3848.  I googled the number and this site came up.  David Baxter informed me (on my answering machine) that there is legal action against me and I must call immediately to resolve.  they said it was very serious.  I called and they were all middle eastern speaking.  I talked to, who I thought was Steve Sebastian, who asked me for my lawyer's name and number.  I asked what this was regarding, he would not tell me.  I asked what the case number was and he would not tell me.  I asked what would I need a lawyer, he said you do and that is all I can say.  He stated that a number of letters have been sent to my home.  I told him this was completely incorrect, no letters have come to my home.  i asked him to verify the home address and he "hung up" on me.  I tried to call back and the number either rang and rang or was not in service and rejected my calls.  They did not ask me for any money, just for a lawyer's name and number.  I, finally, I called back and got another "associate" who said Steve Sebastian was in a meeting and to call him back in 15-20 minutes.  Umm no!  Thank you for your posts.. this type of call and scam is still going on.  Beware.

Like all the others, this call came in on 213-289-3848 -- the caller id said mailbox of "Chris Evans' - same deal -- very thick accent, could hardly understand him, saying he was from the Dept of Justice and the call involved a 'serious issue that was being taken against me' and either I could call him back or have my attorney call him back.     This was left on voice mail - I don't usually answer the phone for numbers I don't recognize.  Figured it was a scam, so looked it up on line today and found all these posts.

Same thing - I keep getting these calls (which we usually don't answer) but, now they're leaving voice messages.  These contain threats of a "big legal mess" and that an "enforcement action" has been taken against my name.  They need to be found and shut down!!

Continued this morning. They called me several times at 5:45am, didn't answer. Couple hours later they called me and the caller ID said 911! I was on the phone with the local authorities when they called, I answered and it was Steve Sebastian saying something about a detective blah blah blah..the lady on the phone said HANG UP! 911 just doesn't call you. I told them I knew it was a scam and you have been reported to the FBI! They haven't called me since.. these guys must be caught!

I received the same message from David Baxter. When I call them some guy answered and said that Baxter is not available but he can help me. He said that there is an injunction against me that I should take care of it right the way.
Then he asked me the name of my attorney but when I told him that I am an attorney he hang-up on me. I try to call back but no one answer, I guess they blocked my number.
Big time scam- I wish I can catch these guys and have them sent  to  prison were to be use as  Cleaning Ladies.

OMG, I think I fell for a scam. The same guy David Baxter called and left a threatening message with a blocked number saying that I had legal action against me and to call them back immediately at 213-289-3848. I called back and spoke with Steve Sebastian. They said there was a detective standing by waiting to arrest me. He said that it was for tax evasion and I owed 20k in back taxes. They then asked me if I had funds to pay. He said that I have exhausted the chance for payment plan and I needed to do something or I was going to be in jail for 6 month no bail. So I went to the bank and payed them some money through green dot moneypak vouchers. After first payment then they said that wasn't enough and that I needed to talk to a supervisor. So now I was on the phone with a Robert(didn't get last name) all who had heavy middle eastern accents with common American names. He stayed on the line with me telling me not to hang up and my phones were tapped and being recorded. I was scared. So I feel now after I looked it up, I got scammed :(

My mother received a phone call from this same number with the same scenario. The caller used the names Alex Katore and Steve Sebastian and also informed her not to discuss this matter with anyone other than her attorney. Sadly, it scared her so much that she actually paid sent $400 to them using a Green Dot Prepaid card. I strongly advise everyone to be aware of this scam. It is truly sad that people would rather steal from other hard working individuals than earn their money the right way especially this close to Christmas.

This same person, under the name "Alex Katore", who had a heavy foreign accent, and another named "Steve Sebastian", called me threatening me with 6 months in prison and demanded I send $400 through a wire transfer by 6:00 pm on December 17, 2013. I sent the money with a card by giving him the security code on the back of it before I realised it was a scam.

Found 2 voice messages when I got home.  Both were from Alex of "the Department of Legal Affairs, U.S. Treasury".  His tone of voice was friendly, but his message was intended to be scary.  Although I could barely understand what he said because of his extremely thick accent, I caught the words "enforcement action" against me and "your attorney", and he was trying to help me avoid "a big legal mess".  He was obviously reading from a script.  I tried to call him back twice so I could tell him what I thought of his lies and attempted scam, but the number was busy both times.

First of two phone calls from a "David Baxter," with a difficult accent to decipher that sounds very much from India/Pakistan, claiming to be with Legal Affairs for the Department of Treasury.  The run down was similar to what others have stated, suggesting an attorney be retained to contact him back and hinting at a big legal mess.

received a call from David Baxter, foreign accent, stating he was with Dept of Legal Affairs, United States Treasury, First call received yesterday about 6PM EST. 2nd call received today 8:53 AM EST, Call placed from 213 area code which is Los Angeles.  Both calls advising me to contact him about a "serious legal enforcement against  my name"  He  advised that I could have my attorney call him, ( my attonrey agrees this is a scam)  Second call his tone was more threatening, implying something serious would happen to me if I didn't return his call.  I'm sure this is the same person every one else is talking about and something should be done ot stop this
