My mother got a call from this number as well.  It was a foreigner explaining that he was from Windows support and there were bad viruses on the computer.  Once she asked them their name and started questioning them, they hung up.  Definite scam.

A lady calling herself Elsie with a foreign accent called and said something was wrong with our Windows program. My husgand told her she would have to talk to me and gave him this number, telling him it was a toll free number. An obvious scam, but don't know what it is about. Anyone figure out this one?

If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. Change all your account passwords, security answers, etc. only *after* you know your PC is clean. Tell your card issuer you've been scammed, you want them to claw money back from the scammer and replace your card because criminals can charge to it again.

THIS IS A SCAM. Read about the your-PC-is-infected scam here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cold-Call-Tech ... on-150170.shtml They lie about your PC sending out malware, error messages, etc., and say your PC is about to crash to frighten you into giving them remote control of your PC to fix the nonexistent problem (don't let them!). If they ask you to open the systems tab in eventvwr.msc to see all the errors, these harmless errors are *normal* for any Windows PC (mine has several and it runs just fine). Don't let them take control of your PC because they can download *real* malware, possibly a malware suite, that can spam, steal bank logins and personal info, etc. If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. THIS IS A SCAM.

My caller was the same Gerry Thompson who called "eav" (above) and left a callback No. of 213-550-1062.  I never talked to him but my wife did.  After she told him she didn't know how to run my computer he asked if my kids would turn it on.  Next day he called back and asked my 11 yr old to turn it on.  My 13 yr old hung up on him.  Don't know about anyone else here but I've noticed he tends to call around the time that kids would be home from school without their parents around.

Received phone call from this number.  The man (with foreign accent) claimed to be from Microsoft Support.  He stated my computer was about to crash because it was compromised by a virus.  He wanted access to it  so he fix it.  He gave me a website to go to so I could download the software that would give  him access to my computer.  I insisted on phone number and was given this 213 number.  I insisted on talking with a manager and was handed over to another person with foreign accent.  He got mad at me when I wouldn't let them on.  However I was online when they called so I don't know if they got to my computer or not.  The number on my phone's "received calls"list was (975)166-5655.  This is not a valid phone number, as I learned when I tried to call it.

Microsoft should address this problem since these people are claiming to be employees of the company.

Two calls  from Windows support on 8 January indicating something was wrong with my operating system. He gave his name as Gary Thompson. He had a thick East Indian accent. I told him I did not have time and asked him to contact me the following day (Sunday) which he replied was a holiday and would call me today 10 January. He said the service was free. I will not answer what he calls today.

Prank Call
I just received a call from the same number 213-550-1062.  The caller's name was James and he had a very strong Indian accent.  He said he was from Windows support and that my computer was in trouble and they needed me to work on it right away or it was no longer going to work.  I told them it was a laptop and that my husband was out with the computer.  He would not give me the steps and insisted that he call me back when my husband returned home.  I questioned him and said you told me this needed to be done immediately so I would need to get a number to call him back.  Reluctantly he gave me the number but told me he could not give me the steps because the computer was going to have options and he would need to walk me through it.  I will definitely be reporting this incident!

Prank Call
I also got a call from this number, he gave me the story about my computer being infected.  He wanted me to turn over the computer for him to delete these viruses. He could only do it from his end.  I think everyone should know if you do this you will be giving away all your information and you could compromise all your personal information.  Beware.  The number shown on my caller ID was from the Virgin Isle, 284-640-0606.

1-8-11 Second Call
Caller ID (unknown): 8 862 041 8948

Call center - I answered the telephone, there was a short delay - then the phone was picked up by caller - sounded like a busy call center.

Male with strong Indian/Pakistani accent claimed he was calling from Wilmington, DE - claimed his company name was "Windows Support" - He represented that they had received an error message from my computer.  Wanted me to go to my computer and open my computer - he could show me the error messages and problem on my computer.  It seemed that he wanted access to my computer.

I use a Mac - no Windows. Thus, I do not believe that this company has ever received any error from my computer.

I asked if his company was affiliated with Microsoft - he indicated that it was not.

Did not seem legit so I asked for telephone number.  He provided 213-550-1062 - He represented that I could call that number and reach him though he was in Delaware and 213 is LA area code. I ask him to confirm his location - he again indicated Delaware.   I told him that the area code 213 was Los Angeles and asked why he was in Delaware and his number was in Los Angeles - he immediately hung up.

VERY SUSPICIOUS.

Said all the same stuff. Wanted to remote access my computer by having me go to www.ammyy.com. Got the phone number and said I would call back. Provided the 213-550-1062 as a call back number with a name of Jakes or something, www.windowssupport.info as their website and they are a legitimate windows support program. Yeah right.

caller ID (unknown)=862-038-6841

I had so much trouble understanding their accent (even after ordering my fair share of slushies at the slushy-mart) that I requested that they email the info to me..They insisted that they couldn't possibly help me without knowing what the exact problem was.
Id just turned on my computer a few min b4 and it had gone through a CHKDSK thing probably because I did a hard shutdown the night before, so I thought it might be possible that they were legit. and they did give me a callback # (213)550-1062..But I still didn't think it was really really legit.
I told them I hadn't got a chance to hook up my new computer, so them waiting for me to hook up wasn't desirable, but they said they'd wait?..(His supervisor was even harder to understand).
I then said I'd grab my laptop and start it up (feeling safe as I don't have my wifi hooked up yet).
They had me start it up, right click on "my computer",click on manage, click on event scheduler..Then told me to get online..Then I told him my laptop wasn't connected...The 1st guy then asked how I'd be able to read an email from him..I said, "At my computer at work.."  Finally said some other things about slushies? and gave me a contact name for when I get connected..You'd think they could tell I was if it was sending out some virus warning, and got my phone number from that.

I received a call today from a guy claiming to be with Windows Support saying that they have been receiving reports about problems with my computer and that he is going to help me resolve them. When I questioned him on where he was calling from he would only say Windows Support and would not provide a location.  He sounded Indian.  When I asked to call him back he gave me 213-550-1062 claiming it was a toll free number.  Because he reacted oddly to my questions I decided to hang up.  MicroSoft is great and all, but I cannot beleive they would be proactively calling users especially since I have the same kinds of errors in my log dating back to 2007.  Nothing in the media either about this and I would think that MicroSoft would publish something.  Not really sure what their scam is but I am confident it is a scam.  BEWARE

Answered a call from 254300221548 (taken from my caller ID). The man started speaking very quickly, thick Indian accent, and I couldn't understand anything but for a few words... "computer", "viruses", "corrupt", "crash"....note: I have been having problems with my computer and have been in contact with some people in the last few days. He told me that he would show me where the problem is. Via my computer, click on the start button, right click on computer, click on manage, click on event scheduler, click on windows logs, click on application. I did have problems following his instruction so I (mistakenly) allowed him to log in remotely. He clicked on "create custom view" then selected boxes "warning" and "error". He showed me that there were several errors and warnings, acting like it was something fatal. He showed me that I could not remove them myself (I did wonder why removing what was reported on a log would fix anything). Then he quickly transferred me to his supervisor Victor. Once Victor was on the phone, I asked him how they got my number. He said it was sent via the reports from my computer. I asked him again what company he was with, he directed me to his website: http://windowssupport.info/. Then I asked him if I would be able to call him back. He said yes, gave me his number and said to ask for Victor. I asked him where they were located and he said Delaware. My partner called him from her cell phone and when they answered the phone, it was not answered with a business name. She had to ask who it was. Then she asked for Victor. He put me on hold and talked with her. Then he came back to me and he proceeded to tell me what I could do to fix the problem. He listed 2 options, Windows upgrade or their software. He listed 3 options ranging from $179 to $299.99. He asked me which one I wanted. I told him that I would have someone else look at my computer and buy what they recommended. He quickly said ok, good-bye. (which is not typical of a legitimate cold-call where they keep you on the phone to convince you how important it is to buy whatever from them). I did a reverse number look-up and it said the number was from L.A., CA.

Got two calls from this number saying they were from Windows and that my computer was infected and it was putting out thousands of e-mail and would show me how to fix it. I started to follow the instructions like a dummy but in the middle of I stoped and ask them for a number that I could call them back at. Before I could dial it the called back again, this time it was the first guy supervisor saying we had got cut off. I told them I thought iit was a scam and screamed at them a while and the hung up.

I just received a phone call from an "Eric Johnson" with what sounded like an Indian accent.  He also had received some notices from my computer that we were having some problems, and he wanted to take me through some steps to fix it.  I told him I couldn't do it right now, but could a get a number to call him back at later.  It feels like a scam to me, so I reported it to the FTC. I'd encourage you all to do the same.

I got a call today from somebody with a foreign accent saying he was from Windows.  He was very hard to understand.  He wanted me to log on and go to Windows Applications Manager.  I didn't, but I took down this number and called it back.  It was answered by someone with a foreign accent who answered "Windows."
