Ive gotten calls from this number 818-717-258. I don't answer it. I think its from a person who tryed to contact me before with a different number .I never answered that one either. I blocked that number. Guess I'll block this one too. Turn it into better business Bureau. I think thes people are involved in a date inter net scam. They meet some one convince them to open a account to put money in. Then ask u to send it to some one else. Then another person intervines says. It wasn't the other persons money & it wasn't sent to the right person & that u will be prosicuted and a bunch of other stuff. I hope they get caught and put in jail. It is a posablity they are in the us but link it back to a faren country like africa.

Thank you!  I have had 12 more phone calls from this number.  When I would go to answer it, there would be no one there.  Finally the same middle eastern accent man, who seem to be writing from a script.  He kept telling me I was going to be "in a lot of legal trouble" if I didn't call his supervisor.  That he was only the paralegal.  His supervisor's name was Robert Mathis.  When I called that number (213) 603-9092 !  I was told Mr. Mathis was busy, that the man that answered the phone could help me...he was rude, and said, "if you interrupt me one more time I am going to hang up and call the authorities on you."  I told him to go ahead and not to ever call me again!  Haven't heard back from them!

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Just received a phone call from this number, also from a man with a heavy middle Eastern accent.  He stated he was from the US Treasury Department and failure to call him back would have me arrested.  Could barely understand him.  He kept saying that I needed to call him back or if I didn't have the time to have my attorney call return the call.  Glad I googled the number and found this site!  Thank you all!

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

Yup, this do***ebag called me as well. I asked him a question that he gave me the wrong answer to, so I told him I doubted who he was because if the call was legit, he would have known the correct answer.  He then told me detectives were on their way to arrest me. Once again, if this was legit, they'd know where to find me. He then hung up on me.
I'd love to find this guy and execute him. The world would be done a favor.

Yes I knew that something was not right I just got this call on my lunch and I kept asking for what and he would not tell me and then said a officer was waiting to take my call. He then stated to me did I go to school because I could not understand his heavy language when he was talking, I told him to give me more details becuase I knew  that it could not be right, and he was not able to provide if it was for taxes, school or anything they will ask for your last 4 digits of your social and everything.

I am glad that I chose to google the number. This guy argued with me when I told him not to call me. I can't recall the number of FCC violations he committed. He even called me back several times. I had to turn the ringer off because of the harassment.

I also got a call today from that number.  First the guy, after several times asking, gives me his name as Peter Smith.  He then says he's a legal aide and his boss, an attorney, Robert Matthews needs to speak w/me.  I asked him why HE was calling and
not Mr. Matthews.  He said he was from the Dept of legal affairs for the US Treasury Dept and there was a legal suit being brought against me.  He had no other info.  I reported him to the Attorney Generals Office.  DO NOT send this guy money.

Called me repeatedly on Saturday morning.  Claims to be called Gary Graham from the Department of Legal Affair of the U.S. Treasury.  Very strong Indian/Pakistani Accent.  Wanted me to call back his "officer" Robert Matthews at 213-603-9092.  I told him that I suspected that this was a scam.  I found out that it is.  Many of these Internet scams originate in Nigeria, so I am wondering if this was is as well.  That country has no recourse for Internet crimes and Scams.  I will be contacting the Dept. of Treasury and Homeland Security to fish these people out and put an end to their scamming.  I would venture to guess that they are outside the U.S.

You most likely will not get it back, never give money to anyone over the phone regardless, U.S. Government do not call people up to demand payment immediately, Don'/t give anyone money over the phone period.

Nobody at this forum can make them do anything. They are scammers/extortionists located in India.  You have to protect yourself.  Get a call blocker and do not answer call numbers you don't recognize.

If true, you've been scammed.   If you used a credit card go to the bank and have the transaction reversed.  If you used those money cards, your money is lost.

Prank Call
We rec'd a call from a guy with a middle-eastern accent this morning who gave his name, which no English-speaking person could probably understand, and said he was with the Dept of Legal Affairs of the United States Treasury Dept.  Mentioned serious legal difficulties regarding taxes and wanted us to call him back immediately.  Said if we were too busy to call him back, to have our attorney do it.  Blessed us and told us to have a nice day.

I, wife, was a bit concerned about this, but husband had heard of this before, so sent me to this website.

Make him stop doing this.  We never talk with IRS people on the phone; we know better than not to get whatever they have to say in writing...or, if you do, to get a badge or employee number from them if you must talk with them...even go so far as to record your conversation.
