Received 6 phone calls this morning from a non-speaking English person. Said that there were some legal problems and something about the Department of Treasury. I was wondering why the Department of Treasury was working on Memorial Day and she said that it was an emergency phone call. She kept telling me that I had to call a number. First phone call came from Los Angeles when it would have been 3:00 am LA time. SCAM SCAM SCAM

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Today, May 23rd, I received a call from a woman (accented english, but not sure what accent) at this number. I couldn't take the call at the moment, but she said that I had to return a call to this number b/c it was the "US Treasury" and it was a financial emergency. I was extremely busy receiving calls and w/business meetings, so later I did return the call to follow up. When I returned the call, an Indian-accented man picked up. I said I was returning the call, and gave my first name, and he immediately went on to say that he was from the legal dpmt of the US treasury, and that I was receiving the call because a warrant was out for my arrest b/c of unpaid taxes in 2008. I challenged that report and when I asked questions of his identity, he authoritatively said that he was from the US treasury, his name was Robert James, and his badge # was 11538. I asked where he worked b/c I recognized it as a LA area code, and he said he was based at 300 N. Los Angeles Street 90012 (which, it turns out is the US Citizenship/Immigration office). He became very threatening, saying the police would be at my door within the hour to arrest me, and it basically sounded like they were going to ask for money in order to prevent the arrest. They did not explicitly ask for any money, but to me, it did seem like they were threatening me with payment--although, again, it didn't get to that point. At some point after feeling very threatened, I realized how off-base they were. The threatening nature of the call did make me second guess myself, even though I knew my books are in order. I finally just hung up and realized it was a scam. This kind of call is abusive. I called the FTC - Federal trade commission, and also left a complaint on their online database. This number has been registered with them, and is therefore also in the FBI database. While the counselor told me that they can't follow up on every individual case, when complaints accrue, they are able to build a legal investigation. If you receive harassing calls from this number please report to the FTC on their website https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

Just got a call as well, they are out on the hunt to see who will fall for this. Heavy Indian accent. Said I was in legal trouble for not paying my taxes. I am just wondering where they got my name and number from. Thank goodness for websites like these that enlighten us on what these people are really doing. Before they start talking when they call u back say you work in the IRS or that you just  sent your payment last week and thanks for the call.
Remember before initiating any action the IRS sends you multiple letters via mail so this is unheard of.
