I got a call from this number a while back and they told me that I won some shopping prize and it is totally free. Then the lady directed me to who she called her supervisor and the supervisor asked me if I could give my credit card number so they could charge my shipping. Then I asked If I won why is it not free?  Then she started to talk about a complimentary magazine script that comes with it but I had to pay a small fee she then told me she was ready to proceed with my credit card then I told her what I told the other lady I would not pay for anything. She hung up on my.. Hmmmm sounds a little fishy to me..

First, the bad news.  976 prefix is an "information access service" number.  It's the earlier precursor to our modern 900 service calls.  When you call a 976 number, whatever the area code, you're charged a premium fee for the connection by the owner of that number, and you're billed for this fee by your local telephone company (plus any LD charges).  In my opinion the company doesn't want you to answer.  They want you to miss the call and attempt to call them back so you can be charged the fee.  Many, if not most, cell phones block 900/976 calls.  Many local telephone companies also block these sorts of calls to avoid the hassle of dealing with irate customers seeing the calls on their bills and disputing the charges.
I reported this particular number to the FCC, who deals with interstate long distance telephone calling, but they blew me off (what a surprise, huh?).  There's probably no way to tell who's calling you, but they can sure find out who profits from the scam and shut them down, if they'd get off their butts and do something.
And by the way, showing the 976 number on your called ID is just a trick.  There's no actual physical telephone account with this number- it's just a billing account number.  If this were email, it'd be called "spoofing," showing something different from the real originating account.

Receiving several calls from this number (213) 976-5100 all day at work. The first call hangs up and then call back immediately and no one is there. I can not report to the do not call registry with out a company name or I would have done that already. I found this site when I tried to look up the company name online.

I'm getting the same call from 213-976-5100  The claim to want to offer you a free magazine day after day to your place of work.  My research has shown that they are possibly associated with, or part of First National Collection Bureau Agency, junk debt collectors.  They're trying to collect info by claiming to verify your work or home address.  You'll also most likely be getting calls from  213-261-0003 also shortly after which is the main number for National Collection Bureau Agency.  One number my call your home phone while the other may call your work phone.  This makes it appear like there is no relationship.  I'm not sure that this practice is entirely legal because they're miss representing by claiming to be a magazine and calling your place of buisness. This is a guess based on the time,  frequency, and other mathematical relationships of the calls.  Please do your own research.

Pretty sure this number is the CIA. All of us who have been called are being located by cellular tower locations. If you are receiving calls from this number, accept the call and clearly state the secret watch-list code: "The fox sleeps in the snow next to his atomic banjo".The calls will stop.

I was receiving phonecalls from this everyday for more than two weeks including weekends.
Today I answered it.
It was scaring they got all my information like mobile phone number, address, office where I work, occupation etc and they tried to convince me for a prescription of a free professional magazine.
The lady who was talking with me said they are calling from Philipines.

I hope its not a scam

For several months now I have been receiving persistant calls from a different number but with all the same trademarks.  Today I just received my first call from this new number.   These calls are coming into my office and I have caller-ID.

I used to ignore them.  Now I pick up the line, put the receiver down on the desk and wait until the call is disconnected.  I get a small sense of satisfaction knowing that I'm at least inconveniencing the caller.  By tricking him/her into thinking they hooked somebody, he actually picks up the line.  I can imagine it; "Hello, my name is XXX and I'm calling to~ uhm... hello?  Hello?"

Wow, that's a little paranoid Karl!  Besides, the phone companies don't have to do things in an underhanded fashion like that, they just do them out in the open.  For example, even though I have a recorded outgoing message for my voicemail, Verizon Wireless still insists on tacking on their own extra 15 second outgoing message, just to suck up minutes.  And another example, why do I have to pay $30/mo. for a data plan when my cell phone has Wi-Fi built in and doesn't need the cellular network?!?  Rip off big time.

Anyway the caller is attempting to subscribe people to free trade publications, in my case some sort of medical device journal (maybe Medical Device Technology Magazine?).  She was nice enough, not pushy like some others have experienced.

I hate that they say they are calling to "renew" your subscription, when I have never subscribed to this journal before.  Typical deceptive marketing practices

I asked her to remove me from their database, and told her that I am listed in the Do Not Call registry.
