The "law firm" called me four times in a row to tell me I was going to be arrested at my home and he knew my address...they had called me before so I told him I didn't owe any money and he said to tell that to the sherrif that will come to my house and arrest me. BS I told him I already filed a police report against a similar call and was heading straight to the police to add this number. He said if I don't pay god help me... I said actually god help you bc I'm at the police station right now and I have been recording all of his calls. Needless to say he hung up and hasn't called since. Don't give them any money it is a scam and if you pay these guys u will be paying whoever you owe as well they are not a legit law firm.

The guy said he calling from Steven Morgan Paralegal Services. He went on to say that a case was filed against for a payday loan with American Cash, which I've never heard of, not have I applied for a loan. He sated that I would be arrested & sit in jail for 30 days unless I went to the courthouse in the morning. I asked him when did I apply for this loan, and other questions, which he couldn't answer, so he hung up the phone. I will be reporting this because this is not funny, fair, and just down right plain mean & rude to this to people. It's too much going on in the world today & no one needs this extra b***s***!

Hi CS- they had me plenty shaken too when I received the first call.  I actually called my local Sheriff's Dept after the first call on 11/17 and they sent a deputy out that morning. I was called again this afternoon and received another call of the same nature, same thick Indian accent, same terms, except this time I kept interrupting and he kept putting me on hold, sometimes for 2 or 3 minutes at a time while I was driving in rush hour traffic on a local freeway. The guy must apparently have gotten sick of me 'interrupting' him, and I told him I was calling the Sheriff on him. I asked them what I owed them then, and they wouldn't even tell me either time or what the due date was that I was 'supposed' to have paid, nothing was in my bank account, and nothing has been since then except from a legitimate cash advance store where I have an actual understandable, person to talk to about the terms, interest and due date, they wouldn't answer any questions except to threaten me. They got me out of bed at 7:30am on that Sat. morning, I was groggy and plenty pissed and couldn't believe what I was hearing.  This was exactly 5 days after I applied for a cash advance/payday loan for car repairs needed, and there was no way I would owe the small loan I received 3 days after it was deposited.  They are as bad as telemarketers, only they read you the riot act and you can hardly even understand their voice they talk so fast with garbled English.  They ought to be taken down one by one by our government.  I put a fraud alert on all 3 credit bureaus (not that they can get anything, my credit's shot from high medical bills, I don't even have a credit card, otherwise why would I turn to cash advance/payday outlets with mega interest rates, I also contacted the Federal Trade Commission via e-mail to file a complaint, and after a few bills clear I am going to change my bank account no.  Probably will have to change my cell no and e-mail address too, which is a shame because of all the work that entails, calling drs offices, pharmacies, family, friends; calling companies to change auto-pays out of checking to another account no.  Unfortunately, you can't change your soc sec no, otherwise I'd do that as well.

I had the same thing happen.  I was in a serious car-deer accident early November and only have basic car insurance, so had to foot the entire bill to get my car back on the road. Turned to online payday/cash advance websites for a small loan to cover what I couldn't, I was desperate to get my car repaired so it was at least roadworthy.  I was accepted by a LEGITIMATE one and have a repayment plan in place in December, and this outfit I did make the deal with is legitimate and has actual English-speaking, easy to understand, and helpful advisors. I was called Nov. 16 as well from a Sacramento, Calif. landline and was given the same schpeel as this Dallas, Texas phone no. that I received today for a debt I didn't even owe anything on. Same thick Indian accent, was put on hold several times every time (rather odd, wouldn't you agree? Some of the pauses were 2-3 minutes long and I was in heavy rush hour traffic at the time today) I argued the point that I never received one penny from them, and the VERY minute I told them I was calling my local Sheriff's Dept., the guy said not to call back (I thought what the h---? He called me) and I hung up.  I then received 2 more calls, each about an hour apart from the same number, with the same messages, but different people I could tell from my voicemail.  I called the Sheriff and they are aware of these scam artists and the deputy told me to just ignore/not answer them, but be wary about what information you give out online. I asked why haven't they been shut down and arrested by higher government law enforcement since all of their numbers are back-traceable, but he told me that it is nearly impossible to catch them all, they just move around and set up landlines in other locations, but that the government is working on a solution.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

I just recieved a voicemail from this number on my work phone. A heavy accented guy stated he was from R&L ???? (I coudn't make out the rest.) He had my FULL social security number, place of emplyment and home address. He also had my bank account number. HOW THE HELL do they get all of this information???????? He threatened a lawsuit as well and said the sherriff would be at my house tomorrow and if I wasn't there they would come to my work. Hmmmm. I know how the law works... you don't get arrested BEFORE you go to court for a debt. I called the number back and a man (not speaking English AT ALL) answered the phone. Then apparently relized he had picked up a call. My voice echoed in the receiver. So there is a delay between us and them.

He has called and threatened me, while saying he works for an attorney. I have had these calls before and spoke to a judge regarding this. He told me to tell them to contact the State Prosecuting Attorney (give them his/her name and phone number. I did and did not get any calls for quite some time and today he began again.
